To all my fellow golfers... Tiger practiced 8 hours a day, 6 days a week, under the guidance of multiple coaches, nutritionists, and personal trainers to get to where he is today. He did this for years before hitting the tour. This game has been around 500 years and nobody has ever perfected it. So next time you break 90, pat yourself on the back 👋🏻👍🏻

I played Pebble once and when I walked the 18 all I could think of was Tiger and this tournament. It was almost a spiritual moment for me. I made a 20 footer for par, the gallery that is always there went nuts and for one second, I felt like Tiger. I will never forget Tigers round here, unbelieable.

I was 14 when this happened. My grandfather called me in the living room and said " sit and watch this, this kid is special " and I've been a fan of golf my whole life. This performance might be the most dominant in all of sports history.

A memory ingrained into your mind you will never forget. My mom doesn't golf, didn't watch golf, till Tiger started playing. She's only interested in watching the tournament if Tiger is playing, if not, she's not interested. I'm sure they are many other non-golf fans who watched golf just because of Tiger.

I'm a mom and when he won his 1st Masters I started playing golf. I'm 70 and still playing golf. I watch golf only when Tiger is playing still. Watched him in person many times. It's a feeling unlike anything else I've ever experienced. Wishing him speedy recovery. TIGER is the G.O.A.T.

Nicklaus has more accolades, but nobody was more electric and fun to watch than Tiger Woods. Doubt I will ever see another in my lifetime.
I remember watching this as a kid. Ended up writing my senior paper in 2003 on why I thought Tiger Woods would go down as one of the most influential athletes ever. I stand by that opinion 20 years later!

To me it wasn't that Tiger won by 15. It was that he was the only golfer under par. That is just incredible, and will most likely never be duplicated. This was before gigantic drivers and golf balls that flew 30 yards longer.
When Jack Nicklaus won a major at Pebble, he was the only one under par.

I'll never forget, my High School graduation party was during the 3rd round, all my friends and family were out playing bbqing, drinking, playing yard games etc. and I was inside most of the time focused on the golf, atleast while Tiger was playing. It was well known how obsessed I was with Tiger growing up so everybody understood. He was my idol.
This guy captured something in us, all of those ridiculously great performances, and yet we wanted even more, yes this performance here at pebble may have been the apex, but it was a great ride, then Woods stumbled a bit and let us all know that yes he was human. I can also remember a PGA where Woods birdied the last four holes on a Sunday and still lost, I can remember the guy won one of these Us opens on a torn ACL, he was just unbelievable, the guy brought so many new fans to the sport as well, God bless Tiger Woods.

At 72 now, and a follower of golf from five years old, I can think back and know how very lucky I’ve been to witness some of the best of golf, as well as commentary. Those folk such as I watched the competitive sportsmanship of Nicklaus, Palmer, and Player. Then were Greg Norman, VJ Singh, Faldo, Trevino..so many.
And then there was Tiger. From his initial win in 1997 of The Masters, to his 2019 victory of the same tournament, his presence in the game, his wins, his magician-like shots and his problems that encompassed so many fans, life has been gifted by what is all of the Golf Kingdom, the players, the crews, and those who talk us through each shot of every game. For four hours a day four days a week those enamoured by a game that grips us all allows us to dream that we might have found ourselves traversing the many fairways around the globe, or just breaking 100, 90, or even 80. We might even hear someone somewhere enjoy one of our shots, and say something such as........Are you kidding me?....such are the things that dreams are made of.

This man saved golf single handed. He was such a big influence on my early years of golf. I grew up watching the end of greats Norman, Couples, and Faldo, then to see this young buck come on and simply destroy, changed my game forever. I remember this like yesterday.

I believe the true genius of Tiger was his ability to compartmentalize in his mind so easily throughout a round of golf. He was able to keep himself in the moment and in the task that was right in front of him. He would think “I’m hitting this shot.” He would never think “If I don’t make this shot I’m not going to win.” Or “If I miss this shot I’m going to make bogey.” It was just “I’m going to make this shot.” Yes his physical ability was above everyone else but his mind was astounding.

I followed Tiger all four days that week. What might not have come through on TV was how he was just intense on Thursday as he was with a 10+ shot lead on Sunday. Absolute killer focus like no other.
After today's tragic accident, everyone needs to treasure this performance more.

What's even crazier is tiger never felt he was good enough. He changed his swing like 5 more times trying to achieve truly biblical greatness. This is why chasing result based goals is a bad idea for most people. You think, once I break 80 I'll be happy. But that time comes, and now all you can think about is breaking par. It never ends. You have to learn to that happiness comes from inside.
I don't know how he could describe it as anything less than euphoria. But, only he knows, so if that's what he says I believe him. That moment must have felt so good, a feeling most people only get to feel once or twice in their life, if at all. Can you imagine it?

Don’t know if anyone else noticed but Ernie Els shot a 3 under par 68 on Saturday in the brutal conditions, an amazing round that was totally unnoticed due to the totally dominate performance by Tiger. I agree that it was the single best golf performance ever.
I watched this and you are right, Ernie played maybe his best golf, and nobody noticed.
I always say Ernie is one of the most underrated golfers of all time. If tiger hadn’t existed, his numbers would be unreal
This swing..its just legendary. When he was young and had that flexibility it was just incredible.
What's more incredible is his ankle, knee, leading side, neck, back, and hip injuries, all being a result of swinging like he did....he might have been able to hit a ball well with that swing, but damn if it didn't cost him 5 years, and 6-8 majors.

@@wx811 agree I do think tho A LOT of it had to do with his strength training...strength training is important and helpful for golf sure but guts nowadays have much more knowledge of how to do it properly incorporate flexibility, calisthenics, circuit training, gokf specific exercises (I don't 100% know this but I'd imagine that now that golf is treated more like a sport, golf's getting more legit trainers and exercise physiologists to it)...tiger just put in body builder type bulk, never listened to his body (for fuck sakes playing on a torn acl...sure you win another us open, but did winning that 1 us open possibly cost him 3 more?)...
All that plus his violent swing led to his injuries...I think if he had just swung away like he does in this video and didn't put so much bulk on he could have lasted longer

No man, you have a gift use it, you'll be hurt but that's the sacrifice, they're fully aware that they'll end up hurting later in life as nearly all pro athletes will (seriously find me a top top top tier athlete in any sport INCLUDING Nascar that doesn't have at least 1 nagging injury...its part of what you give up for winning)...people don't get it if they don't play competitive sports...for these guys, they know they could end up with nagging injuries but it's WORTH it to them...you can call it stupid but, well, that's why they're champions, I highly doubt they'd go bsck and "play it safe"...if tiger was told "you can only win 1 major but you'll never get hurt if you go bsck in time" he wouldnt take that deal and neither would any other elite athlete..albeit tiger may have taken it further than most cause he would do dumb shit like play on a torn acl...but same concept....
Like I said earlier I don't even think it was the swing, it was his bulking up and complete lack of direction in how to properly weight train for a repetitive motion like the golf swing that hurt him...he could have actually prolonged his swing with the right training

Tiger Woods is arguably the greatest thing that's ever happened to golf. Growing up in the early 2000's, a lot of my relatives played golf and I heard his name a lot. Before long I found myself tuning in just to watch Tiger. All these years later and I don't play, but I am still an avid fan of the sport. So many people my age owe their love of the game to this one man

I was 10 years old working with my grandpa at his driving range/mini-golf filling baskets watching this on a 13" TV what I do to have that time with him again

Now he's tied with Sam Sneed on this day with 82 PGA wins.. 19 years later.. what a guy!!

To this day that 7 iron shot he made on #6 at least to me explains why he had some of the health issues later on. He basically was physically stronger than what his body frame could handle, the levels of torque he was able to generate were extreme. 202 yards uphill in US OPEN cabbage probably wet lie heavy moist ocean air simply unbelievable, greatest player ever to lace up spikes bar none.

I think about how many tournaments he would have won, and how many major wins ahead of Jack he would be if it weren't for his back problems. My guess would probably be somewhere around 100 wins and 20+ majors.

I didn't start to play golf until I got out of the Army in 1990. Which means I never really got to see Jack, Arnold, Hogan, Trevino or any of the other greats. I was fortunate enough to watch Freddie win the Masters in 92 and follow his career. But being able to watch Tiger at his best from say 99 thru 2002, I'm truly grateful for.

Exactly. Been watching this guy for 30 years now. Opinions vary, but when the stars align, Tiger finds a way to capture lightning in a bottle again and again. What a rollercoaster to watch.

He challenges colour, race, generational gaps, nostalgia etc ..... if he won another 5 majors there are stupid people who'd say, "well the equipment is better" not realizing the difficulty of the course, the length and the level of skill and professionalism. So, I would say, at the very least an argument CAN be made for Nicklaus to be the greatest golfer who ever lived.Heck, in the 70s, he played 40 majors...ONLY MISSED ONE CUT! He finished in the top 5 more times than ANY OTHER GOLFER HAS FINISHED IN THE TOP 10. I could go on and on of his records. They fill a page. When Tiger was hot, no one in his peer group could beat him. He was hot a lot. But compared to a guy that won Majors until he was 46? Sheesh. Tiger is 44. I think it is safe to say , as far as setting any other records or winning majors...those days are over. Yes, Tiger won by considerable margins, yes, he had lowest total strokes and stroke avg . So he has his own set of records. But, whenever you say "greatest" you gotta look at the entire body of work. Tiger's body of work is impressive. Jack Nicklaus' is bigger, better and more impressive. Being 69, I have has the privilege of seeing some of the world's best athletes across the board. I actually was a Johnny Carson fan and watched it religiously....and saw Tiger on The Tonight Show. Lord I think he was 4 or something.

This why I put Tiger ahead of Jack. Jack at his best hit really high quality, really solid golf shots consistently when it mattered. But he didn’t ever have the creativity, the imagination or the pure artistry Tiger had at his best on the Golf Course, so for that reason for me Tiger is the greatest player of all time.

You have a point. It all depends upon what you value as a fan. If you want to argue that peak Tiger > peak Jack, I get it. I also see that, for example, Jack had 55 top-fives in majors, Tiger 33. For Jack, that's two top-fives per year for 27 years 1960-86, with 18 wins included. Jack was as steady a golfer as he was a man.

The year 2000 has to still be Tiger's best year and arguably the best year for any golfer in history: 9 tournament victories, 3 consecutive majors and finishing 2nd at the Player's Championship and Top 10 at the Masters. Insane.
Ehh don’t forget he’s also the only player to ever hold all 4 major trophies at once and I think he even went on to win the next two the following year if I’m not mistaken but don’t quote me. That’s where they coined the term The Tiger Slam instead of grand slam!

Nate, there’s less than 1% difference in the distance or performance from the clubs from then to today’s. But I agree, Tiger is the best ever.
To be honest if you just come in steep enough, and knock it around 95 percent effort, the shot isn't that hard. 99 percent of people will, 1. Pitch out 2. Come in too shallow and knock it 20 yards.
Out of rough it's not strength, it's decreasing the grass between club and ball, which means steep. That's why we take less club in these situations, because not only do you deloft the club, but the grass between club and ball creates less backspin.
It's just experience, and reading lies, situations, and conditions is critical to hitting a good shot.

He dominated this difficult course like no other golfer, even better than Jack in my opinion. Tiger was truly amazing and was playing at a unprecedented level at that time. Before Tiger I was a casual viewer of golf, but during this stretch of golf I would watch golf over the NFL or the NBA if Tiger was player. That never happen before. No golfer today come close to Tiger dominates, and now that Tiger is injured I just don’t watch golf as much. But enjoy playing it.
The roar of the crowd on the walk to the final hole gave me the chills!!

That last round was the best Tiger ever looked. No pressure from the rest of the field, no more pressure from the magnitude of the moment because he had already locked up the win. It was just peak Tiger playing freely with pure focus and peace of mind.
This will forever be a treat to watch.

They start playing it the week before. They typically will not mow the rough for a few days before and during the tournament. In the right conditions, if it's growing even a quarter inch a day, that's half an inch every 2 days.
For a professional, they will notice this.

Grew up with Payne. And even after he achieved fame, when i saw him a few times, he was so damn nice. That tribute really got me.
THE UNDISPUTED ‘G O A T’…..he single handled lifted the bar for golfers, he brought millions of eyes to the game that otherwise would be watching NFL, NBA etc.
If every sport had a god watching down on their players, Tiger walked up to that god and said ‘ Look at me, I’m the god of golf now’

I didn't think I would watch this since I am not a golf fan, but I made it to the end with no problems. The course was beautiful and Tiger did an awesome job. They must have told Steve he couldn't drink until after the interview was over.
I caddied for a friend in this tournament and we were in the 3rd or 4th to last group with Vijay on Sunday....the whole week was electric and I remember watching Jack finish on Friday and Tiger teeing off on 1..you could sense the changing of the guard...and then being at Pebble to top it all off was really special to be there to see how it all unfolded...being inside the ropes, the crowds and even the players enjoyed watching a record being set was a once in a lifetime experience....
