    This is one of Tiger’s most underappreciated GREAT performances. It wasn’t by 15 shots like at Pebble Beach and it wasn’t in a dramatic playoff on a fractured leg like at Torrey Pines, so it gets glossed over. Bethpage Black is a monster of a course, that the PGA Tour pros had never played before in tournament action. Yet not for one moment was Tiger over par that week, and not for one moment did the course ever beat him down

      The backstory of this tournament was Phil's birthday came during that weekend and the NY crowd chose him as their favorite. By Sunday they were not only cheering Phil's makes but also wildly cheering Tiger's misses. When tiger made the last put and raised his hands in victory, his teeth were clinched and the expression on his face seemed to say "screw you, I won in spite of your jeers". LMAO those Westchester NY trust fund babies found out that the GOAT golfer can't be rattled.

    • @TheLocalLt
      @TheLocalLt Před 4 lety +7

      Daniel Barwatt the story of this Open has nothing to do with Tiger, it’s about how the NY crowds came to adopt Phil as their own, which would become a major storyline in the 2000s, a decade when 4 US Opens were played in the state, and it’s also about how the crowds came to detest Sergio and his waggles, and also about his complaining about the fans and how unfair the rain delays were. Everyone expected tiger to win comfortably at the start of the week and he did. That’s how good he was, that he could show up at a major, be the overwhelming favorite, win handily, and yet have it be so ho-hum that the tourney is more remembered for those who didn’t win. Tiger was that automatic.

    I grew up just 4 miles away in Melville. Everyone who knew golf in the area knew about this course and its difficulty. As a kid, I rode my bike past it numerous times and thought about how great it would be to play there. I had played two of the other courses there with my dad but they were never in good condition back in the early '80s so we usually played elsewhere. I finally decided I needed to play the Black course in the late '90s, just a few years before they announced it would host the Open.
    The first tee is right by the clubhouse and there's an elevated patio area behind the tee box where people gather and watch to see those brave enough to play this course. There's even a sign warning you that this course is for "highly skilled golfers". Talk about pressure! I went by myself and teed off last in our threesome. I decided to hit a 5 wood up close to the turn on the dogleg right and pulled it just off the first cut of rough into the 2 ft tall fescue grass. I found it and silly me decided to try and get it close to the green. Somehow I actually struck it decent yet the ball got caught up in the grass and only went about 15-20 feet. The grass was so thick that I couldn't find it! I walked back to the first cut and dropped a ball, already feeling defeated. Tripple bogey first hole...way to go! I ended up shooting a 92 and it was the most exhausting round I ever played (lots of distance between many holes no carts allowed). Anywhere else and I would have been disappointed but for me, I considered it a victory.

    I think the most impressive about the 2002 US OPEN, if I am not mistaken, is the fact that it was the first time a major tournament was held in a public golf course, the monstrous Bethpage Black, and that is new. Considering it was in New York, too, held a special place to those who usually frequented exclusive membership golf courses. It was a fitting win for Tiger Woods, because his lead was not a mile long, as he battled the weather, the jeerers and a deep bench of impressive contenders for the cup.

    • @bradcarter6286
      @bradcarter6286 Před 4 lety

      Unknown Classified they are both great courses. I always prefer the East Coast beasts for Opens. Oakmont, Merion East, Shinnecock, Winged Foot West, Bethpage Black, Oak Hill, Baltusrol, ect. But Pebble Beach is damn special.. That course is beautiful and plays super tough when the USGA get ahold of it. Olympic Club is a tough west coast setup too. The great thing about Bethpage in 2002 was not just the setup, but when the weather set in it was a monster. I believe in 2002 the par 4 10th played 502 yards and nearly none of the field could even get to the fairway. Bethpage probably has the toughest par 4s in championship golf. What’s great about these classic courses is the fact of similar they are to the deadly snakes of the world. The most insanely beautiful are always the most dangerous. Pebble Beach when the USGA gets to lay their minds upon it and when that wind rolls in even at only 7,000 yards is an animal. 2019 the weather didn’t play a huge part. But you can bet it will in the future

    I was very fortunate to be in my late teens back then, to appreciate what these greats did in their sports. To me this is my once in a generation talent. My first experience was with 7 time cup champion Dale Earnhardt Sr. and he could have easily won way more if he hadn’t gotten killed. 2nd was Michael Jordan, he is the best, and there isn’t any that will come close to him. Same goes for Tiger, he would absolutely dominate a major, where we are really watching who is going to get 2nd place. Then Tom Brady, I was at Super Bowl 51, in my home city of Houston, and what he did in the 2nd half will most likely never happen again. All these guys, gave me goosebumps. Because when their backs were against the wall, they shined brightest, and didn’t allow moments, or pressure phase them!!. At least to me they are my favorite G.O.A.T’s 🐐.

      its not really outside, just more upright lets the club go straight up and straight back down. Wish he stayed with Butch, would have won 25 majors. Swing was so on plane from 99 to 03

    Wow he said it was golfs toughest and “longest” test at 7,200 yards. Thats the AVERAGE length on the regular PGA tour now, and that’s not even talking about any of the majors. They will normally play quite a bit longer and a lot of courses on the regular tour play significantly longer as well. Crazy how much distance has been gained over the years, even from the time of this open until now, which hasn’t really been a crazy long time, guys have picked up sooo much distance. So many of the guys are hitting drives over 300yds now. I remember when tiger came along it was a HUGE deal when he’d smash one over 300, as very few guys out there could match that aside from big John Daly and maybe a couple others.

      @bradennichols3154 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Tiger was the one who forced these longer changes to present day length. He was winning so easily. So they made courses longer and forced all the other players to try and hit a longer ball. It really did weed out a lot of names that were really good but couldnt hack it on longer courses

    Jack in his prime, would still not have the shot arsenal to be better than tiger. I have been fortunate to watch all the greats since the early fifties when golf was coming to life because of Arnie after 1955, Arnie was my favorite because he was near where I grew up, when Jack turned Pro, Arnie was inn his early thirties so it was inevitable that Jack would over take him, not in popularity but in success and he did. But in his entire career, Jack never was able to have the command of the different shots, whether it was iron play, trouble recovery shots or any type of moving the ball through the air that Tiger has done. Had it not been for so much lost time due to injuries, surgeries, etc. Right now, I doubt there is any ???? that Tiger would be sitting on about 25 majors and a minimum 100 tour wins, since he lost most of that time in his prime years.

      Torrey Pines didn’t host the US Open until 2008. Pebble is open to the public who can afford the $500 green fee and $1,000/night stay at The Lodge (2 night minimum), which isn’t nearly a true public course.

    I think Tiger in 2012 ish said to Sergio's comment that Tiger intentionally picked up his 5 wood for his second shot from the rough to get the crowd go crazy while he was trying to swing a golf club
    "Well he is complaining about something."
