Even worse is is when you show symptoms and the teacher who does not know you have the disability yells at you,and points them out.

I'm a gigantic advocate for education reform, but following Finland should be a guide rather than a set direction as here's why:
Finland's agricultural and labour economy collapsed in the 1960's and with it most of the country's trade. In order to grow the Finnish needed it's economy to grow based on research, skills, and creativity (in other words, Education). The Finnish education system was a product of its time that would be extremely dificult if not impossible to replicate anywhere else because it was literally the last resort for the Finnish to not fall into a depression.
To follow your metaphor, it will be like taking the wings off of planes because rockets don't need them :\ Most cultures will not accept the Finnish system because of their functional economy and indefferent politicians

I really wish we would consider more of the Fin's ideas on education. We teach our kids to study to get that perfect job with a big pay check instead of teaching them to find themselves respect themselves and find what makes them happy. Money doesn't buy happiness...neither does stuff that is pushed on us every minute of the day. Fin's have far less stuff than we do, smaller homes, ride bikes everywhere and are far happier than we are. We need to sit up and pay attention. Some change wouldn't hurt us at all especially with the school system in the USA!

"And they only have to take ONE standartized test at the end of High School". Correction: We have to take more, if we wish to become university students. The system goes like this: You have to take at least 4 exams that are mandatory and more exams that you can decide. Also you can decide, what exams you take as mandatory, but you only have 1+4 options, the 1 being Finnish as mandatory for all students. Then you have to take 3 of the 4 options as follows: Math (long-term or short-term, depending what you've studied), Swedish, English or a 'real subject' such as history, physics, chemistery, philosophy, another B-stage language, etc. After you've chosen between those, you can take more. Also you have the option to take those exams in Finnish, Swedish, English or Sami.

Being in school in America, the biggest thing I remember that sucked was just sitting around doing nothing most of the time. Like, lectures are a small portion of your time in the classroom. I went through several library books a week because I would finish my work early and be stuck in the same room until the next thing. There were times that my habit of reading after finishing my work got me in trouble. Know what I was reading? Science books. But for some of my teachers it was blatant disrespect to be learning another topic for fun in their classroom.

    • @Kookie_978
      @Kookie_978 Před 5 lety

Natalie Euley well, that is sorta breaking a classroom rule since you aren't suppose to be doing or learning anything unrelated to your current subject the teacher is teaching in class. But then again, you *did* mention that you do nothing most of the time so I guess that is fair

And I think it's pretty cool here in Finland that we have free school lunch and free educational system. And now 2017 the educational system is changing to more electronic learning. Almost in every school we have laptops and tablets. I am Finnish and i am quite happy, because i live here. In Finland some people may say: "On lottovoitto syntyä Suomeen" and that means " It's a jackpot to born in Finland"

reading all the comments complaining American education while here in Indonesia
school starts at 7 in the morning,
i'm in 12th grade and we spend roughly 8 hours in school- we usually go home at around 3.30,
students buy their own lunch (if they even want to eat),
non-academic clubs are soo hard to maintain and to receive respect from teachers (my choir was not funded at all to go to a NaTiONaL competition even when we ended up being 4th place),
    endless homeworks and group projects,
standarized test to graduate school AND apply to universities
    and-okay i'll stop i think it's already a long comment
    edit:
oh wow alright first of all i did not expect this comment will be this consumed. i am sorry if i seemed to be 'specializing(?)' my self or my country's education but it's not my intention. i'm saying that because apart from this video's comment section i've seen through hollywood movies or YA novels about US' education, and i just simply think it's a bit better than mine.
i'm not trying to compare or anything it's just some things are still different. you can choose classes, am i right(?) well, we don't here. we all have the same classes and subjects, highschoolers can only choose between
    science (math+bio+phy+chem),
    social (geo+history+socio+economics)
or languange and culture (basically languange classes). apart from that we still need to pass about 10 other mandatory subjects like english, 'basic' math, indonesian history, sports, music/art, local culture studies, and stuff.
US' schools also seems more fun like you have proms, football/sports games, halloween, while here not so much. it's quite hard to held an event because it's called 'not important'.
i can point out other things like there may have more structured curriculum (every teacher here have different kinds of teaching methods so what we get from one teacher to another can be different, ugh i don't know how to say it but basically very unstructured), more better literature programm (you have reading assignments right? like how to kill mockingbird? we never have those kinds of assignments, i wish we do i love reading:c) and more but the point is i'm not trying to be rude or comparing but these are other facts that i think what makes education sistem (maybe) different in the west and east countries....?
p.s. indonesia gets its education from Japan. we have flag ceremony every mondays like Japan colonial times (which means being toasted by the sun on the field once every single week.)
