The single most important take home message is what Guru Martinez says at the 5:40 mark. When a pitcher drives off the rubber and is able to PROPERLY transfer all the kinetic energy and momentum up the chain towards the ball, the arm ends up going for a ride with almost no effort whatsoever (analogous to a ball effortlessly exploding off a bat when it connects with the sweet spot). Power control pitchers like Martinez, Ryan, Verlander, and now Cole have built their careers on mastering those mechanics. Amazing.

the analyst has it wrong. watch Nolan Ryan. his arm to slows down in as controlled manner as any - not letting it whip loose - like Pedro. that, along with his daily exercise regimen might be the keys to his longevity. there was also an operation early on.
Pedro is a terrible example to use. Pedro's velocity dipped in the latter years so considerably, it led to his ERA climbing; there was arm damage. velocity drops with age, because of internal damage that never repairs. so, any damage that can be minimized is absolutely critical - that's why off speed change ups are gaining in popularity...they work for two good reasons; effect, and longevity.
