This video is made in accompaniment with a blog review article here: robinwong.blog...
I am an Olympus Visionary, and the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III was loaned from Olympus Malaysia. My opinion is subjective, and this is a user experience based review.
I have tested the E-M5 Mark III in various shooting conditions, fast paced tennis tournament, night street shooting, insect macro photography and even birding, which I do once in a pink moon.
Special thanks to many friends who helped out with behind the scenes footage:

I want you to do tutorial on “talking with a beautiful smile all the time” that’s incredible.
Yep!
After four years of extensive use, I have become a dedicated Em5 Mk2 fan and now a dedicated Robin Wong fan. Love your approach Robin. As a 70+ travel photographer I ditched all my heavy Canon gear and get remarkable stills and video from this fun-to-use camera. Just returned from shooting in Georgia and Armenia. Wow! I always shoot with a lightweight tripod and reckon it gives me total control and ultimate clarity. Biggest criticism is the start-up lag, especially shooting in RAW. Has that been improved? I am an Aussie by birth but grew up in Penang through the 50's. Still love Malaysia. Keep up the good work.
Thanks. I don't feel any lag during start up though. Maybe there was that half second or less delay but that was the SSWF cleaning the sensor. And if I am working with anything crucial the camera is on all the time.
I used to own the em5.2, and recall the start up time can be almost eliminated by making sure the camera is in single shot sing focus, with quick sleep off. Then, holding the button down when powering on almost instantly results in an in-focus shot.
The Pen F has the same "problem", but again you can get an instanous shot by using the single shot single focus method.
Note that you do have to turn on the camera once to charge the sensor. Once done the sensor stays charged even when off.
Thanks for this review. I am no longer gassing to upgrade my E-M5 Mk II to a Mk III.
Been following your blog for years now and IMHO you're one of the best photographers out there and I do love how you make your reviews, no fanboyism, no click bait, with actual output of how the camera will perform, and less BS! I still think your Pentax 645Z review is one of the best. Hope that you get more CZcams subscribers because you deserve it.
Thanks for the kind words, appreciate the show of support.
Dear Robin, I bought the original EM5 after reading your articles. I loved it, and I loved the fact that backpacking in the mountains it was so light and small. I just gave that one to my granddaughter after the EM 5 iii came out, after reading and watching your articles on it. The improvement in dynamic range is significant and was one of the primary reasons for my change. I am quite happy with it, and I appreciate your help in getting both of these properly set up to start!
With the 25mm 1.8 it is almost as portable as my iPhone. Thus, I can carry it with me most of the time. I don’t miss full frame.
I liked watching you interact with people in the beginning, you have a very nice way with people!
There will be an extended cut of that first street shooting part in another video, I will release it soon! Stay tuned.
Possibly the best "true / all-in" review you have done. Thank you, Robin.
Hi Robin
After having the OM-D-E-M5 mk 3 for a year for every day photography its great. I have the M1 mk 3 as well but it hardly ever goes out. I have paired the M5 mk 3 with the Olympus 12-200 lens and it has enabled me to take great images on long hikes without the weight associated with the M1 mk3 and 12-100. Yes I use the M1 mk3 for indoor work and if I have need for that little extra, but in reality it very rare. I do take the 25mm 1.8 with me if I feel I need the extra sharpness.
I can feel your pain - "Why not USB-C?!!". You are so right asking this question …
Why indeed!!!
I was just about to purchase the Sony RX 7iii but i was not sure , so I decided to keep looking/researching for the one that fits my needs. Im glad I did because i came across the E-M5-Mark 3 and in the process found Robin Wong's youtube. Love how you do the breakdown / presentation that makes it more enjoyable to watch and learn. Purchased my new camera today and subscribed. Looking forward to a great photography experience. Great Job Robin ....
@KitJames Silver
I dont even own a m43 camera yet here i am watching your wonderful content
Thanks for being here.
I love your infectious enthusiasm.
Thanks!
Thanks Robin for the comprehensive review!
I've been using mkii for all of my videos in the past 2 years, never regret upgrading to the mkii whatsoever. This mkiii can be a good upgrade for my kind of work, since it is capable of shooting 120fps in 1080p.
Love from Thailand 🤟🙏
The E-M5 Mark III is a huge step up from Mark II when it comes to video! You gain cinema 4K, 120fps full HD, and incredible AF in video!
Another honest review, can't wait for a fuller and more extensive test, especially with all the amazing features it has. Thanks Robin !
Thanks, appreciate the kind words!
Hi Robin, I made just a test and used the E-M5 Mark III via Elgato Link Cam Link 4k as a webcam - with full risk it stops during the meeting - and, interestingly, the battery worked for 123 minutes! So I was able to use one battery load for 2 hours. Olympus put a 30 minutes restriction on the camera for video recording because if there is more than 30 minutes of continuous video recording the camera is treated by customs import authorities as a video camcorder and they charge higher customs for video recorders than cameras and camera sellers of cameras want usually bypass these higher customs and put these restrictions on video recording. (That it records only 29 minutes is said also in the specifications, as I just learned.)
Hi Robin my name is Gareth Lovering, I have just bought an Olympus EM-5 Mk3, when I started using it I came across a setting which it seems a lot of people don't know about. if you turn the dial to Auto, press ok, then ok again, select express motions, press ok and then press the up button all the way to the top you can use these settings to freeze waterfalls, I would you to mention this if possible on one of your next blogs.
Thanks Gareth for this tip
Thanks, Robin. A great review so soon about the E-M5 III. I also like your assessment against the E-M1 II.
Thanks, appreciate the kind words.
I love the chill photo breaks sprinkled throughout your videos. Wonderful work
You are a natural photographer. And Malaysian people seem very kind.
Very nice review, practical with many pictures to document your claims. I really like the way you demonstrate the capability and the features of the camera.
Thank you.
Thanks! The proof is in the pudding, i mean the photographs. I always have something to back up my claims!
Hi Robin, thanks for a helpful user review and some excellent shutter therapy along the way. When the specs were leaked, like a lot of people I was disappointed that construction would be plastic. However, having got hands-on with the new camera today I can only say that the build quality feels solid and high quality. I'm looking to replace an original EM5 with a small, light camera for street work and paired with the 17mm f1.8 this should do the job very well.
Glad that you got your hands on one, it is hard to convince people that it did not feel cheap or plasticky at all, all you have to do it hold it yourself!
Thanks for the videos. Love the enthusiasm. Just watched your original e-m5 video. Just bought mark1 after 7 yrs lol.
What an incredible power tool the camera is! Was lucky to be in the launch in Austria :)
It's a good thing that Olympus put a phase detect sensor on this mid-level camera. Considering that its rivals at this level all have phase detect.
Yeap, and it works very well too.
Love the review, Robin Wong. Love your enthusiasm and the beautiful images you had captured. Subscribed!
Thanks, much appreciated!
I enjoy your reviews. They are always honest, thorough and practical. If I was in the market for the Oly Em5 miii your review offers enough to make the decision.
The portraits of people are so wonderful nice, wow! How do you get people to look so openly and honestly in the camera? Is it the way you speak with them?
You are a very good public speaker. You would make an amazing product manager. I could see you announcing new technologies and products on a stage.
Love your photo at 23:32 of the yellow bird. Amazing shot. Thanks for the review and looks like it might be time to finally upgrade my em5ii. Now it's just a matter if I want the EM1ii or this one.
Thanks for the kind words!
Amzing point regarding the testing of Continues Auto Focus. 😂😂😂
You seem like a cheerful guy, but you look especially happy to be presenting this camera! I've been watching for this to come out, it offers a lot without some of the compromises other cameras ask you to make. It really makes me wonder if Micro Four Thirds could work for me...
I was really happy shooting with the camera!

Far more informative review than some youtubers with millions of followers.... Coupled with first hand user experience from a talented photographer like yoi...
You deserve far more subscribers. Thanks for the hard work with the review...
I was really scrstching my head, like how much heavier would it have been with the em5 mkii battery? To sucrifice having the same batery life ermmmm dont think so?
Thanks, you are too kind!
Yes. However, for an EM10 ii user with 4 batteries, I could use them in the EM5 iii.
@@davebellamy4867 not the point. They downgraded the build quality and the battery life for what? 50gram weight saving?
Thanks for the lengthy reviews. I love your smiling as well! Cool!
Thanks Michael. Smiling is good!
I am also a fan of the Olympus OMD line. I am looking forward to you backing your statement in future videos that the em5iii has an almost two stop ISO advantage over the em5ii. I have an em1ii and an em5ii. In my side by side comparisons I feel there is less than one stop advantage when it comes to ISO performance. I enjoy your work. Thanks for all the effort.
The two stop advantage can be seen from ISO6400 and above.
This is what I was amazed about and questioned because I also can only see a 1 stop difference between EM5-II to EM1-II. ISO6400 on the EM5-II is pretty poor. There are high ISO examples in the Camera Jabber online review and they look remarkable! This is one heck of a camera.
The EM5 III is not a mini EM1 II, I´m happy to own both cameras but I´m glad about the fact that the EM 5 III has the panorama function. When I hold lectures a panorama view with animation makes a lecture more livebel. And the EM 5 III is so light and it fits perfect in my bicycle bar handle bag.
Robin thank you for your enthusiastic viedeos!!!
Is that continuous panorama in camera?
Does it? The EM10 Mk IV has continuous panorama photo but I've heard this EM5 Mk iii does not. Or do you mean a different kind of panorama?
Really like your videos Robin.
... Genuine and informative! Thank you 👍☺️
Thanks Peter! I do my best to share.
Excellent review, with honest assessments of the camera's and your own 'limitations'! Beautiful photos of the tennis tournament, birds, and of course the cat dismounting the automobile. I'm now a subscriber.
Thanks Robin! I'm a PEN (E-PL10) user, aiming to upgrade to this E-M5 Mark III. 😃
Beautiful review, Robin, along with beautiful captures using the em 5iii. I think I will be pre-ordering soon. Thanks so much for your informative and personal style in your videos! I will look forward to the upcoming videos you mentioned.
Thanks for the kind words, and working hard for the coming videos.
Robin! I didn't want to press you on the subject in my previous post as I realize that you probably was under NDA. Congrats on a brilliant new camera!
Just bought an E-M5 III after some months of indecision. Love the insect pics because that is exactly what I want it for.
"Click click" BEAUTIFUL!! 😁 I heard it, I liked it too.
Go out and click more!
Looks like a wonderful camera to get, when the price eventually goes down.
The price always goes down.
And that's a good point because personally I believe it's overpriced in a world of full frame mirrorless with similar or better features, about the only unique selling point for the Olympus is the awesome weather sealing but is that worth it in today's market?
@@keithrjoseph9528 anyone else has Pro Capture Mode? That incredible 5-Axis IS? That super reliable C-AF for video and stills? Live composite? I don't think it is overpriced at all. But if you do feel free to look elsewhere.
Help full review, thanks Robin. Shame tethering not within the menu. Was in m5 mk 2.
until today the EM5 Markiii still cannot tethering ...hopeless, just wonder how come my m5 MK2 able to do tethering but not MK3?
Very impressed. And nice shots. Thanks Robin.
Thanks Malcolm!
Very good review and excellent presentation ! Thank you !
Thanks, appreciate the kind words!
Hi Robin thanks for a very interesting review. Look forward to handling one.I thought the insect and bird shots were especially good.
Thanks for the kind words!
Great review Robin, as always. You almost had me convinced to go M1 MkI to M5 MkIII but minutes after watching Rob Trek's comparison of the M1 MkII and the M5 MkIII I did what you always recommend - I went to 'shoot more photographs' of the Spring blossom coming out here in sunny Normandy, France.
I noticed I was carrying the OM-D M1 Mk1 in the same way I used to carry my Nik D600 - arm down by my side with the camera hanging from three fingers, with index finger hovering over the top-deck controls. With a wrist strap for safety, this is a Quick-Draw Magraw way to hold a camera.
The grip on the M1 is big enough to do this. I don't think this would work securely with the M5. That grip is too shallow and as a result the battery inside it is a great deal less 'juicy' than the battery in the M1.
So, although the M5 MkIII is very nearly the same camera as the M1 MkII, as far as image making goes, the grip [and battery it contains] is the deal-breaker for me.
Nice review Robin as always, Em5 mki(black) is my second slr camera, after 4 years of abuse the shutter curtain got stuck but I was told the issue might be from using third party battery which I learned my lesson, then got the EM5 mkii(silver) because I still believe in the system, then just last December I bought a mint EM1 mkii(best camera I ever had, thinking betwwen EM1 mkii or Sony A7ii), now I got the combo for wide and telephoto landscape shots.
For telephoto shooting, the E-M1 Mark II makes more sense, with PRO lens, and amazing 5-Axis IS.
@@robinwong Yeah agree but still saving for telephoto, got a cheap lumix telephoto, I barely remove the oly 12-40 in Em1 mkii for semi wide landscape.
@@mike969696 yeah not slr but the battery thing I'm not sure, according to some camera technician, third party battery can cause some common camera issues.
Great review, Robin! Amazing macro photos
Thanks man, appreciate it.
No plasticcam for me. When i bought my panasonic g81 i was so happy that it was not full of plastic like the very simillar g7. Plastic feels cheap i dont run around with a cheap feeling cam without a joystick. A cam should be a precious thing, plastic dont has it
There is the E-M1 Mark II.
@@robinwong ja and there is a gh 5 which i own. But i want a midrange cam like g81 or olympus em also not cheap feeling even my small gx85 is not plastic and feels precious
metal does not take hits as well as plastic
Yes em5 iii is the for me. A casual shooter, I will get the em1 II in silver limited edition later , I will hunt for it.
Robin …. choosing yet another olympus …. looking at your pics …. I think the em1 is hard to beat.. those street pics were amazing … maybe it’s the old sensor is better than this one here in the em5 mk3? what are your reflections on this …..?
Thanks for a very thorough review with example photos, much appreciated. Since fw 3 on the E-M1ii, I have been shooting with my E-M1ii, leaving the E-M1X and E-M5ii at home. If the video CAF is good on the E-M5iii, I can live with the small battery, single card slot, no headphone jack, smaller and lghter, just fine! Looking forward to more of your videos in the coming days.
Thanks for the kind words. The next video coming will be me shooting video with the E-M5 Mark III! Stay tuned.
Thanks for the insightful review Robin. Also in E-M10iv. Just ordered an E-M5iii. You reviews very helpful.
How is your em5 mark iii would you recommend it?
17:58 That's 3.2 seconds handheld? Wow!
hi Robin
you're very kind person
you reviewed this em5ii with the best method

Super. Nice balanced review, good and the bad. Hope to get back to KL and Malaysia again.. Thanks!
Please come to Malaysia, KL misses you!
@@robinwong and Kuching! Ahhhhhh.
I felt e-m5 iii accumulates heating around the grip which wasn't found in E-M5 original, guess it is due to replaced metal body to plastic.... Happy with the performance but heating makes my hand quite uncomfortable...
I also want to know why no USB-C Olympus, why... they could improve just some small things and make it amazing camera, now is just very good camera, but it's great for travel and street. Wish we had PEN-F with the same functionality. In any case great review and images Robin. I shot a tennis tournament with E-M1X when it was released and it's far from easy, very dynamic and fast sport.
Thanks for the kind words! The tennis was a good place to torture the camera for C-AF performance, and the E-M5 Mark IIi did well!
@@robinwong you did weel my friend in first place ;)
Excellent, real world review. Thanks Robin
Thanks Martin!
Mmmmm interesting camera. Seems to me that if the em5 III is closer to the em1 II in specs now, the next em1 must be going to have a big jump up in specs to create a difference in levels again. Great review :)
That's my thought as well, Olympus is saving up the secret juice for next iteration of E-M1.
I'm glad they're sticking with their "small size and weight with top features" roots. I think they stand out in a crowded market of "bigger, bigger, bigger". The population around the world is aging and it's those older photographers I'm seeing changing to M43 in various groups and forums I stray into online. M43 is definitely not dead :)
@@CarolyneMacMillan Micro Four Thirds is more alive than ever!
Pudu market❤️ What a great location.
Come back to KL!
Cool! I like the small form factor with pro lens! I want one!
I am getting one myself!
Thanks Robin for a great review, you will be my go to reference channel for learning to use the Oly5mk3 when I get mine! And of course I follow Ming as well..
Thanks for the kind word, appreciate it much!
Hi Robin, love your review and photos: good job :-). The OMD M5 III seems to be great. Is there still reasons to buy the OMD M1 MK II?
Jeeez! That's a small camera. For the first sight i thought it is a key-holder :D Nice little thing for traveling with
It is a perfect camera for travel!
Few details for SD cards.
1. E-M5 Mark III can use UHS-II cards.
Cards like these can have up to 300mb/s. Using those will speed up the camera.
2. Olympus maintains a SD Card compatibility list for each camera.
If you are making just hobby photography, it does not matter that much which brand and type of card you use. In case you want to go PRO, you might just to be sure that in case of technical difficulty, you will not be dismissed by the Olympus support for that. At this point there are listed SD cards made by Toshiba and SanDisk.
21:50 This is the only function of software and not hard. I wish Olympus would do Olympusly! and give us a radical firmware update for all their touch screen cameras. After all there is a reason why we Love Olympus over others! (Are you still hearing me, dear?!)
5:16 Someone else said the EM5 Mark iii had their favourite shutter sound! It must be good! 👍😅😊
The E-M1ii just selling $900 in my city, it’s more powerful, more solid(the E-M5iii is build in plastic) and much cheaper, if you want lightweight, go for E-M10 iii, a dozens grams lighter and cost you just $320, I don’t see any reason buy the E-M5ii unless the sensor outperform all other Olympus camera.
Yeah, no reason to buy E-M5 Mark II now. E-M5 Mark III has the best sensor from Olympus and it offers the best Olympus can offer now, outperforming all cameras that does not have the same sensor. Go for it!
Thank you for this video. It's excellent. Offers a lot of information and very, very well explained.
A hug from Malaga, Spain.
Awesome!!! I just think hope they kept the Magnesium Alloy body, like the two previous E-M5. But based on your review, I think it is definitely worth to upgrade in the near future from my original OM-D E-M5. Especially having the same sensor, auto-focus system and IBIS capacity as the OM-D E-M1 Mark II. It's like a mini version of it.
Yeah it is like a mini E-M1 Mark II
It' all plastic!
@@goranpavletic2145 and what's wrong with that? Plastic is used in industrial grade devices including automobile and aeronautical applications. Even space suits are made of plastic. Also, do you question a safety helmet made of plastic?
@@robinwong true, but at the same time, the Magnesium alloy body of the original EM-5, gave it a more premium feel. And when you compare the EM-5 Mk iii with its direct competitor, the Panasonic G95, you get almost all the features of the EM-5 Mk III (4k video, 5 axis IBIS, weather sealing, etc) in a Magnesium Alloy body and $500 less (which you can use to buy a good lens).
The 5 axis IBIS might not be as good as Olympus (but getting there) and the only thing it is not on par is at the AF capability, as it uses contrast with DFD (which is reasonable) instead of the new Olympus phase detection.
It is a tough decision.
For the price they are charging for the camera, it should at least be Magnesium Alloy, just to give it a premium feel, as the previous E-M5 models did.
Thank you Robin excellent review!!!
No worries, my pleasure to do it!
I love the EM5 series; this just adds the biggest missing features -- PDAF, USB charging, and improved low light. 4K @ 60fps will turn off some users, but you'll probably be better off using the 120fps 1080p if you are doing action anyways. Price is competitive, but the body needs to drop another $200 before I'll buy it.
When I first bought the orginal EM5 mk-1, I recall its biggest missing features was peak-focusing. Manually focusing with my 17mm f/0.95 lens was really hit and miss -- and often, miss. So annoying to have taken a great shot, but got the nose in focus only, and not the eye. gah... now, with Video being a big part of my flow, cAF is where I find most MFT cameras need help.
the C-AF is excellent for both stills and video. I shot an international tennis tournament with it, and got away with extremely high hit rates.
Well, excellent review. Now the decision. You can purchase the em5 mkiii or for less money a very lightly used em1 mkii.
Can't go wrong either way, both are great options.
What do you want? Lightweight to carry around or bigger and heavier with some advantages in burstrate, framerate and material? Your choice....
7:58 Some people give different smaller magnification numbers for the EM cameras likex0.68x instead of 1.37x. Does this depend on the lens used? I don't really want a huge viewfinder image. It's like sitting in the front row of the cinema! I like to feel that I can see the whole image at once.
A comprehensive review, Robin - always love your perspective. Don’t heed the haters! I have the E-M5.2 and upgraded later to E-M1.2 due to AF system (for wildlife), body size for larger lenses and more dedicated buttons (amongst others). The E-M5.2 is a great camera, but it looks like the M5.3 is the camera it should have been, addressing all of my issues with the M5.2. I see you found a few things not to like, but overall this appears a superb package. Keep up the good work 🤙
Thanks Craig for the kind words, indeed there are some small things I did not like, but overall it is a great camera. I am getting one for myself!
Robin Wong so what didn't you like? Battery life is lasting longer on the Em1 mk 2 and "the x", as you said, snd the headphone-jacket and the myset is a feature of the flagships as well. Something else you miss? The camera seems to be so practical to me! Small, lightweight but a powerpackage.
Greetings from Germany!
Great video Robin. It helps in deciding whether to switch to the E-M5 iii or stay with the E-M10 iii. So now it's only the choice for a new body or a new lens (150mm pro) :-) Keep up the good work.
Is there a 150mm pro or do you refer to the 40-150mm pro?
Hey Robin, you've been a wonderful inspiration to explore the joys of Olympus M43 photography, so, thank you! Love your blog and the videos.
What macro setup do you have, specifically for lighting, and do you have any budget-friendly recommendations? (I have the E-M5 Mark II and the 60mm macro lens)
Thanks for the kind words. If you dig deeper, there is a video about my macro shooting techniques.
Finally. Any idea when it'll be put on sale in Malaysia, Robin?
Thanks for the video!
I was told some time in November! Stay tuned!
Thanks Robin for the review.
No worries, my pleasure to do it and share what I can.
@@robinwong Mr.Robin. Need your opinion. I am still using my EM1 (the 1st generation). Photography as a hobby. Shoot potrait & sometimes street photography. Plan to upgrade. Should I wait for the EM1 mark III or just go for the new EM5. I have been eyeing the EM1 Mark II for sometime but aiming for the mark III (if the rumour is true). Thanks in advance.
Great review Robin, glad I found you here. It's a shame Olympus did not include Tethering on this model, as em5mk2. Do you think they may do firmware update and include tethering. Was giving this as a surprise gift. So have to carry on using my M1 in studio for tethering. Thanks. Roy
This camera is more and more tempting ...
It is a camera that just works and makes sense in most situations!
Because of the many comments with plastic anxiety: I like the look and feel of metal too, but if this is important to you, there's the E-M1 II without any (?) disadvantages.
I gained some trust in plastic since I own the E-PL9. It got totally drenched at a waterfall, fell from a table, got kicked by accident by my son - and doesn't even have a scratch.
I know right? As if the E-M1 Mark II disappeared from everyone's mind!
Thanks for one of the first reviews on this camera. I like the way you do it.
Main drawbacks for me will be the price and the plastic body. I‘ll have to hold it myself to see how it feels. There are some plastic variants that feel well enough almost like metall.
I like the metall and weight on the M5 II.
Polycarbonate sounds better though and the weight difference might actually be more important for, since I almost always have a camera with me. That‘s why I love MFT.
Get your hands on one and try it for yourself!
Yeah this should have been called an EM10 Mark IV
@@greggpedder E-M10 with weather sealing, Cinema 4K, 5.5 stops 5-Axis IS, Pro Capture mode, 50MP high res, and same image quality as flagship Micro Four Thirds camera? Really????? Man... People demand a lot from entry level cameras these days. No wonder camera companies are dying.
@@robinwong people also demand that if they're paying a premium then they don't expect the manufacturer to cheap out with a plastic body. Saying they wanted it "lighter" is just an excuse for cheaping out.
At this money you've got the Pana G9, Fuji XT3, Nikon Z50. All weather sealed, all magnesium alloy bodies, all meet or surpass the specifications of the EM5M3.
I just don't understand the strategy 🤷🏻♂️. I came from wonderplastic cameras (when that was all I could afford) and would not go back.
If they wanted it truly premium and light weight they should have made the chassis out of carbon fibre....that would be a selling point!
Nice informative review. Thanks for sharing
My pleasure to do the review
Guess I'll have to wait for the EM-D 5 M IV, not a fan of so much plastic, should have 2 memory slots, and it should have a larger battery, even with its better features. With a lighter body Pro heavier lenses may be an issue. Built-in GPS would be nice.
Glad to see you showing your pictures to your subjects! Do you try to send them the pictures later?
If they requested for the photos, yes.
Nice real world review Robin I want one...Gerry
Thanks Gerry, that makes the two of us!
The mkII is my favourite camera. I took it to KL last year for a photo holiday - the perfect travel camera. I hope Olympus have improved the UI for the menus. I'm really not bothered by single slot card slots, but micro-USB instead of USB-C? Odd decision, Oly. Plastic is often a good material. I don't understand the love for metal mounts - plastic mounts are lighter and will grip better, but hey - consumers!
Consumers are loud.
It seems there is a mechanical problem with plastic base on metal tripod : the base cack and this is not covered by warranty...
Thank you Robin! It is so nice to hear about a new camera that isn't the size of a house! The mark III looks just right in so many ways.
By the way, how does the photo stacking work? Can you do that handheld for macro shots? Maybe it is a subject for another video? :-)
Thanks for the kind words. I don't use focus stacking for my own insect macro, it does not fit my workflow as the focus stacking needs the subject to be perfectly still. I shoot insects outdoor, they are on the leaf, so imaging if they move even the slightest bit, or if the wind blows, I can't use the stacking anymore.
Pretty cool you are into insect photography. Have you ever considered underwater photography living in Malaysia? Lots of good dive spots 🙂 I just purchased the OMD EM 5 iii but I shoot underwater 🤿
Very honest review, thanks.
Thanks, I do my best to be honest.
The image quality is really good!
I'm more surprised that Olympus opted for plastic body instead of the previous magnesium casing. I understand that they do it to shave weight off the camera but I kind of concern about its long-term durability. I have EM10 mk.ii that have been dropped from a table (about 50cm high) and it still work perfectly. Hopefully the plastic in EM5 mk.iii is very very durable for long-term beating as it kind of meant to handle abuse of outdoor activities :D
That being said I think it is essentially a mini EM-1 mk.ii, which is great tho :D
Intersted, but will gonna wait few months to see how the users rate its durability :)
Knowing Olympus and their history of camera making, I have no doubt about the build quality and durability of their cameras.
I look forward to the video about the video 😃
It is coming!
Oh wow, I've been waiting for this.
Wait no longer!
@@robinwong Still watching, looks like a great camera so far!
