    Hello friends! Today I am making a pinafore I saw on SHEIN, for cheaper than it costs to buy the dress -- which was a surprise to me! Please remember, while I will always advocate for shopping as sustainably as possible, this video is in no way telling you where you should spend your money or how, it's simply a way for me to share better ways to consume, as it were, and how to make a fairly simple item instead of buying a sub-par item from a fast-fashion cheap-labor-propelled website.
    IMO sustainability is all about balance, and doing the best you can with what you have, no matter where you shop. But, like everyone I think, I have a hard line I won't cross, and that is with SHEIN (and Romwe, aliexpress, temu, etc.)
    I'd love to know your thoughts and whether you'd ever try making a garment like this!
    much love always,
    Kristina

    A lil reminder! I'm not here to judge where you shop, just to provide you with more info and consideration as you do so - like everyone else I also love a happy purchase and we all deserve to find some joy in what we own! If you'd like to delve more into the joy of learning to make your own things, I really do highly recommend Skillshare (or I wouldn't be working with them so much!). I've been having so much fun adding more skills and refreshing already-existing skills with them.
    always lots of love, Kristina

      Kristina, 100% cotton sheets are the best! I use a lot of Aunt Martha's iron on transfers for embroidery. Not an artistic bone in my body insofar as drawing goes. Sewing with or without a pattern I can do with my eyes closed 😆.

      Sometimes (and hear me out), sometimes it’s not how FAST you finish a thing. Sometimes it’s about the time you take for yourself. I find hand stitching meditative, peaceful, restorative.
      Also, our children learn more about our values seeing us live our lives in sustainable ways.

      Yes, once you’ve made a garment out of linen for the summer you don’t want to go back to the plastic lol I got a linen cotton blend at a church rummage sale for 50 cents Saturday. I ran away before they realized I got 2.5 yards for a silly price 🤪
      Or cotton, I love cotton, too! But linen is so expensive to buy already made in to a garment.
      Also SHEIN is awful but even more expensive brands employ slave labor and children, and use horrific forever chemicals.

    Shein uses images of high quality dresses (not their own), often from independent designers or sewists, and then produces the lamest dupe possible for 5 cents. As you point out, sewing such a dress takes a lot of fabric, time, effort, and skill (and for some of us, perseverance 🤣)
    Well done. It’s so very cute.

      The real question is, "Who is going to really notice anything below your shoulders/neck?" I wore a formal gown a few months ago that I had thrifted. The hem looked 100% fine on the outside, and terrible on the inside. I didn't care, because it looked beautiful on the outside. I saw several women at an event recently with beautiful every-day dresses/skirts. I was immediately able to tell the dresses were homemade (wrong in one instance though) not because of how bad they were, but because of how beautiful and one-of-a-kind they were. Maybe there were flaws in the dresses; goodness knows my own are not perfect. But if they look nice and give us confidence, who cares?

    Thank you for the carefully breaking down how much a dress really costs. I do think that mass production is a wonderful thing. I'm also struck by the fact that although everything most people wear is mass produced, I rarely see myself or others wearing the same outfit. So the feeling of individuality is maintained. With all that being said, You Did A Splendid Job of Sewing That Dress. It came out beautifully made and it is an heirloom dress. I'm sure your children will be glad to wear it someday. And it is amazing how good that can feel to a grown child to wear something that mother made and wore.

    • @WithLoveKristina
      @WithLoveKristina  Před měsícem +11

      I think mass production can be a great thing! If course, I think it'd be better without fast-fashion and cheap labor practices (imagine if everyone could make a living doing what they liked, even in mass production!) and I'm not a huge fan of polyester and other plastic materials, but we all do what we can and finding joy in life is also important.

      Of course we can't be 100% ethical but I think the discussion is mostly about avoiding constantly buying things than anything else.
      These "other unethical brands" you mentioned could AT LEAST provide long lasting/high quality clothes, unlike SHEIN that sells wearable trash bags and encourages constant buying instead.

    Super cute make! I LOVE your red rose dress, it is gorgeous. A toddler bouncing on the table whilst sewing brings back soooooo many memories. Creating in the chaos of motherhood are magical times. I can tell you that my kids who are in their 20's now are all creative in different ways and really value the effort that goes into making everything. Plus their sense of colour and dressing for themselves, not what is trendy, is fun as they ask me to sew garments for them. I am a quiltmaker and they relish a new quilt from me and still have their well worn toddler quilts. They still enjoy playing with my fabrics and pattern designs. So your children are learning a lot by being with you as you create. I can see the long term affect compared to the other mum's at school who were not creative. My kids love art, gardens and decorating their rooms. Plus, frugality is the mother of invention and ingenuity!!
    As a sewer of 45 plus years can I suggest something to you. When I am going to cut rectangles or squares that are large like the skirt panel I will measure and make a snip then tare the fabric. It gives me an on-grain line. Fabric stores did this all the time "back in the day". There will be a bit of a fluffy edge but as all edges get encased in the end it might make preparation easy in these types of projects.
    I really enjoy your channel. Saying hello from Australia xxxxx

    Slight rant below:
    Yes, the whole Shein conundrum frustrated me. I was in a "Cottagecore but make it Curvy" FB group a few years ago and so many people would purchase from Shein. It struck me as so hypocritical, because they would regularly discuss how societal structures discriminate against bigger bodies (which I 100% agree with) and the need for more equitable and just systems but then turn around and buy from these companies that make clothes using modern-day slave labor?!?! I saw a lot of people say in response, "Oh don't feel guilty, there is no ethical consumption under capitalism." THAT'S NOT WHAT THAT MEANS. It does NOT mean "Oh since everything is unethical, I may as well go with the worst option and not try to find anything better."
    Now, I am fully aware that finding clothes that fit a larger body that also make you feel cute AND are ethically and environmentally conscious is a pretty difficult task. Add in affordability and durability and that becomes almost impossible. It wasn't as much the fact that they bought the clothes from that brand in particular as it was the hypocrisy of what I described above. If you're going to do it, then at least be honest with yourself. Part of that conversation should be recognizing that a low price means that you may not be paying the cost directly, but someone or something else will be...
    And this sounds pretty gatekeep-y but oh well, the whole thing with cottagecore is that, to me, it encompasses elements of sustainability, earthiness, compassion, harmony with nature, and finding satisfaction in simplicity. Shein and Amazon follow literally none of those. But I suppose that's a major difference in how people approach these sorts of things, to me Cottagecore was a set of principles and to others it was merely a way to dress.
    You know, the great Aesthetics Boom of the pandemic made me see a lot clearer (as a nonreligious person) why there are so many different Christian denominations that split over seemingly minor differences. That would make for an interesting thesis paper...... Hmmm....

    • @chipahoy4668
      @chipahoy4668 Před 28 dny +2

      I 100% agree with all of this. It's so frustrating to see the dismissive attitude of some of these people. I think that's a big thing with American culture, though. Being an American (of course not only Americans buy from Shein) we don't really care about something unless it directly affects us or we see it in front of us and no one is outside our front door sewing paper-thin dresses in horrid conditions.
      I hate how people take trends like cottagecore and minimalism and somehow manage to turn it into the most heinous, unsustainable thing ever.
      Also, could you elaborate on the Christian point? I'm very interested in that (As an also non religious person)

As a result, you'll be wearing a well made classic that will make vintage collectors happy long after we've all crossed over the rainbow.

I also love to iron while sewing, it's so satisfying to flatten seams and stuff. Also, ironing is super helpful for No-Pin sewing. Fantastic outcome! Thanks for showing it to us.

    Hooray! This is my kind of sewing video. I sew the same way when making my skirts which I have not done in years, your video makes me want to make myself a dress. And I adore how easy you show it is to cut out the pattern without using a pattern. I cannot sew using a pattern I have to eyeball/ measure my body to sew my clothing and I have not been able to master arm holes. Plus, I handsew I do not machine sew.

    I finished a tiny pair of noren curtains for my bedroom door. I listened to your video while I was hand sewing, and you've solidified my decision to invest in a sewing machine. I have kids, and I am plus-sized, I feel like making our own clothing as much as we can would be great. I've hand sewn a lot since I was a kid, and I think I'm ready to go for it! Also a lot of chaos and caffeine over here, too haha.
