  • Sketching plein air with casein paints on Godrevy Beach in Cornwall.
On a typically Cornish, December afternoon - I thought I'd go sketching, just as the light was fading and the tide was coming in. It was very really good fun!
I used Richeson casein paints on a Seawhite A4 plein air sketchbook. Very limited palette of Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow Light, Titanium White, Ivory Black, Ultramarine Blue and Cool Red.
Thanks for watching - 'bye for now' - Andrew

Brilliant video Andrew, I love your plein-air adventures so it’s great you’ve had a chance to get out sketching again. You always seem to have fun, even when you’re getting rained on! 😁

    I love seeing that dog.
Great fun for him going on your painting exploits.
    Art not bad either (usually).

Thank you Jim. He’s been under the weather lately with an ear infection but he’s on the mend now 👍🏻

Nice Sketch. The Rock you were painting on would also make a good subject. Has some character. Basil looked very fancy today.

Thanks Mike - Basil looks a treat in his coat doesn't he? Keeps him warm on a windy beach in December

Hi Andrew ... you're a real hands on painter just make do with whats there shows that you don't always need an easel ... going out in all weather capturing the scene adds to the essence of a painting or sketch ...

Casein is a lovely media, especially if you enjoy the opaqueness 😊

Great video - wonderful scenery and artwork as always. I always love the plein air sketching videos with casein, and would love to see more of your oil stick sketching too. There’s not a lot out there on CZcams with those two mediums.

What I like about your vids is always your "good fun" bit: because without that, I don't know of any good reason to paint. A friend of mine was a commercial artist, and a very good one - but hated painting; or at least, hated painting what he had to paint to make a living. I couldn't function like that - not sure that the frustration didn't have a lot to do with his early death, either. Anyway, always good to see you, Madeleine (spelling?), and of course Basil.
Your colours look so fresh that I thought I'd try casein as well; but when I went to look for them, the price made me stagger - do advise if you know of an economical source, or I'll stick to watercolour, acrylic, and oil.

Thank you very much Robert - I love painting and drawing and I try to make it fun as much as possible. I spent years doing a job that wasn't exactly fun (not all the time) so I make the most of it.
Gouache is a good alternative although it isn't permanent when dry - unlike casein which is (which makes it ideal for layering up).
      Madeleine is the correct spelling
      All the best
      Andrew

Hi Jasmine - Casein is more permanent than gouache when dry and I find it dries super fast which is why I like it for sketching.

@@Jasmine_Shelby_art No need to beg anyone's pardon - all useful comments are welcome, by me and I'm sure by Andrew. Yes, I have tried gouache, and use it sometimes - its properties are well known, with their strengths and weaknesses; and it's enjoyable to paint with - most media are enjoyable to paint with, once you get used to their individual little ways! I'd like to try casein because I've not tried it before, basically - and I did like the look of Andrew's painting; I hope to find some at reasonable cost: it's probably cheaper in the USA, where most of it is made. I've also become aware of Ceracolour, from Natural Pigments - so in the New Year, I'd like to have a go with both; it's good to have something to look forward to at my age!

    Is this acrylic?

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  Před 5 měsíci +1

This is with Casein paints which are made with milk protein and are opaque like gouache but dry permanent
