    How could anyone stand to live like Ralph did in his game Wreck-It Ralph? He was forced to spend decades of his life living in a dump, alone, next to individuals who not only didn’t acknowledge his contributions to their game, but actively despised him for who he was. At some point you’d think this hot tempered villain would’ve summoned his strength to free himself from his conditions, go rogue from his game and forge a life for himself, but he never did. Ralph was created to be a villain yet he never went Turbo, but why didn’t he? What separated Turbo from Ralph?

      I think "Going Turbo" means to take over someone else. Turbo was popular in his arcade game. I think when that other racing game appeared, Turbo grew jealous. That is how Turbo got into the game and survived the unplugging. I need to know how "Sugar Rush" was made. Was there a secret behind this candy-coated racing game?

    I think in a nutshell, Ralph didn't go turbo because he had a sort of villain support group to help him cope with the idea that he may go under appreciated. But Turbo was really just egotistical and jealous of the new game taking over his fame etc.

      He only started showing up in the villain support group at the 30th anniversary. The difference between Turbo and Ralph is Ralph didn't care if his own game was the most popular. Turbo was 'programmed' but really, is a jerk born or made? Anyways, Turbo needed to win. He had to be the best at everything. No matter what the cost was, no matter who got hurt.
      Ralph, even though technically going 'Turbo' (I.e. Rouge) he did it for validation, to prove he wasn't just some villain. Even disregarding the other villains advice to 'suck it up, just do your job because you have to' but realize- at any point, Ralph could've went Turbo and destroyed any game he wanted to, just because he felt dehumanized. Ralph had will, and morals. Turbo simply...didn't.

    In my opinion, Ralph didn't go turbo is because his name isn't the title of the game he's in. This might not make sense at first, but bear with me.
    Turbo was litteraly named after his game, Turbo Time. He was the centre of attention, not only from his arcade game, but the game itself. He was obsessed with winning and keeping people's attention directed towards him, to the extent where it was litteraly insane.
    So when Roadblasters came into the image, he was scared that the attention would suddenly dissapear, so he did everything in his power to get his name back into the world, or at least race.
    Ralph however, isn't really the centre of everything, and his name isn't the title of the game. His internal problem wasn't as big as Turbo's. He just wanted to be the good guy, so he could simply be accepted, but not centre of attention.
    That's just my invald opinion.

      No, in every other game, the other characters may have been fighting eachother in the game, but outside they all treated eachother with respect. In ralph's situation, Ralph was disrespected both inside and out of the game, to the point where the same party he helped to create, he wasn't invited to, because all the other characters in his game disliked him so immensely outside of the gaming world. Even the mortal kombat, and street fighter characters treated eachother with respect. And to Ralph, he seemed like the only character with this situation. Where-as other games seemed to be okay with their villans. So he left, because he had enough of being hated for 20 years.

      I don't think Felix realized how rotten Ralph felt and Ralph probably didn't start feeling bad about it until the 30th Anniversary, like he was suffering a Midlife Crisis. He probably thought Ralph was okay with it. When they reunited in the Fungeon, Felix is angry at him and doesn't think he knows what it's like to be rejected and treated like a criminal. It must have been a really whammy line to hear "That's every day of my life". I wouldn't be surprised if Felix is one of the main reasons, other than their game almost getting shut down, that the Nicelanders actually started treating Ralph as a person, because now Felix knows how it feels.

Ralph wanted respect from those IN his game, and planned on coming back from the beginning. I think after Turbo infected Road Blasters, the games were examined by the developers. Some source code of Turbo remained and game developers realized the characters can write their own code. To prevent this in future games, the game programmers placed security measures preventing the characters from making changes to the games code. By the time Fix It Felix was introduced, all arcade games were updated to make certain the codes could not be changed unless you knew the code. Turbo hid away long enough to by his time, and entered the game Sugar Rush. By this time he had spent years deciphering the codes to make changes to the games program, becoming King Candy. And the rest is history. That's my 2 cents.

    its possible that the programmers heard of Turbo doing what he did, and so in the future programmers made sure to give them some sort of morality and keep them from doing so, of course they didn't want to restrict their creations to their own games, but they couldn't let something like this happen again. .. maybe they even added in the "die outside of your game no respawns" thing after Turbo, and that's why he was able to survive and come into candy crush.

    • @maywenearedhel
      @maywenearedhel Před 6 lety +5

      I doubt the programmers even considered their character becoming sentient, so the idea of them creating a "morality" because of Turbo is unlikely. I think he was just highly competitive because he was the only character you could play. Also, Turbo never 'died'. It's likely he escaped before they got unplugged and hid out in disguise at Tappers for years until a new racing game was plugged in. What surprises me is how long that arcade must have been without a racing game! It had to have been at least 10 years before Sugar Rush was brought in (that is if Turbo took out the other racing game in the late 80's). I doubt Sugar Rush is any older than Mario 64 (which came out in '97 in America).

      They treated him like an actual bad guy instead of someone simply filling the role of bad guy. He was just a performer, someone to fill in a role the game needs to be complete. Every game needs some kind of antagonistic force for the protagonist to overcome, but they treated him like crap even when the game was off. At least, at the end, they still act like they do during game hours but they actually treat him better offscreen.

    @ghostchaser1631 Před 6 lety +25

    Again, it's really quite simple (my first comment post for these is on "Why Vanellope Still Glitches"), Ralph didn't go Turbo because he just wasn't trying to, all he wanted was to prove to Felix and the Nicelanders that he could be heroic and win a medal, which he did...well, sort of. He did get a medal but the problem there is that he didn't really win it, he simply climbed up the tower in Hero's Duty and walked up to the stand where the player would usually get the medal when they ACTUALLY WON THE GAME and triggered the victory sequence, thus automatically getting the medal in the process, ergo, Ralph really stole the medal (like a true bad guy) *gasp!*. Getting back on track though, it would seem that the arcade characters may have mistakenly misinterpreted the phrase "Going Turbo" as being any character who wants to leave their game in order to achieve something better, whereas the way I interpreted the phrase as being more of a malicious nature. As Felix explained, Turbo abandoned his game Turbo Time and tried to take over Road Blasters in a fit of jealousy because the kids were no longer paying attention to him, only to crash it instead which, in turn, got both games unplugged. As we saw toward the end of the movie Turbo, or King Kandy as he was now being called, had become quite evil and psychotic, even going as far as to attempt to harm the child star of the game that he had currently taken over. Also, when Ralph fought "Turbo Bug" as we like to call him, at the end he had now christened himself "the most powerful virus in the arcade" and boasted how he could now take over any game he wanted. In short, the difference is that Ralph simply wanted to prove himself a hero in order to get more out of life, namely gaining the respect of Felix and the Nicelanders, and he greatly succeeded as well as having come to terms with who he is in his game, while Turbo/King Kandy wanted to become the center of attention again. So no, what Ralph was trying to do would not be considered "Going Turbo" (at least not the way I see it).

    • @DpDepresso
      @DpDepresso Před 3 lety +2

      This also would explain why characters who escaped unplugged games never thought about going into other games as “Bonus levels” I think as the movie called them. (I understand seeing Q-Bert in another game other than his own is weird, but the movie seemed to have no real problem with it in the end of the movie and they just assumed the game updated or got redone or something like that) They felt it wasn’t right to intrude into someone else’s game and it would classify them as a Turbo

    I think the "Bad-Anon" (a pun on Alcoholics Anonymous) thing undermines _Wreck-It Ralph_ a bit. It might have made a LOT more sense if the support meeting was actually the "green room" behind the games, and all the supposed villains were really just *actors* playing their parts. This would explain why none of them would ever go Turbo: No matter how eeeevil they might seem, they never, ever get lost in character.

    I think it's simpler than what you described. Turbo was an egomaniac. His only priority was himself. On the flip side Ralph often felt bad if he destroyed something he didn't intend to and actually tried to get to know and befriend the other characters in his game. He actually just gave a crap about the people around him even though he wasn't programmed too and the feeling wasn't mutual.

  • @gwenfairholm8080

    Personally, I think Ralph technically did go turbo, just not to the extent that turbo did. He left his game while the arcade was open (causing his game to be deemed out of order and therefor putting everyone in it in jeopardy) and went over to hero's duty to get it's medal (and in the process altering the Gaming experience for the player and making her loose the game). Ralph just went back to his game before both games were shut down forever. Admittedly classifying that as "going turbo" depends on your definition of that phrase.

    • @VGamingJunkieVT

      I don't think that's going turbo, though. He didn't seek to destroy those games or take over them, even though he almost unwittingly doomed Sugar Rush but he was willing to sacrifice his own life to save it. He just wanted to get a medal and then come right back so the Nicelanders would quit treating him like crap, he was happy in his game.

    Actually, Ralph did go Turbo in that he abandoned his game to invade Here's Duty, but he was motivated by a desire to be accepted by the other characters in his game, where as Turbo had been motivated by jealousy. Ralph and Felix reconciled when Felix found out what it was like to be ostracized by someone whom he had fallen in love with and when he complained to Ralph, Ralph replied "You've just described every day of my life." All he wanted was to accepted, and when he got that, he was OK with being thrown off the building.

    I think a reason that Ralph didn't go turbo was because of where he started. For Ralph, his status quo was always the same. A "crummy job" if you will, but it was a constant. He grew weary of it, but it was his lot in life. It took reaching a breaking point (Gene's words at the party) for him to finally try and change his station. You could say that argument was the first time he considered changing things by getting a medal. For Turbo, it's a different story. He started as the main character, the guy who won and was rewarded, the star of the show. With Road Blasters coming, his thunder was stolen. He had everything and suddenly lost everything, that's what made him more desperate, desperate enough to try and take the spotlight back with desasterous results.

    The ghost example doesn't demonstrate being programmed to be lonely, that's a clear logical result of being physically isolated from society.
    Ralph and Turbo's behavior is driven by their programming? Because Ralph is programmed to be antagonistic but sympathetic and Turbo is programmed to be a selfish power monger?
    Well then what about Bowser and M. Bison and Clyde and Diablo and the zombie? They're all necessarily programmed to be even worse than Turbo and they're a bunch of supportive nice guys who've accepted their role before Ralph, despite being older than most of them. You are massively overthinking and even more massively overstating this simple quandry.
    Why didn't Ralph go Turbo? The same reason a real person might not have: Because he isn't a giant douchebag.

      I think it's because most of them realize they're just there to fill a role, it's a job. Ralph hated that the citizens treated him like an actual monster even though he was only acting bad because that's his job. Turbo wasn't pretending to be an egomaniac, he simply is that way. I don't think his game required him to be a douchebag. It seems they have their own personalities separate from what the game programmed them to be. They have sentience, free will.

      yeah i think so too. tbh, it seems like theyre programmed with things and when they are it also shapes their personalities i guess. bowser wanted to kidnap princess peach all the time was because he has kids, he wants princess peach to be their mom. zombie is also bad in his own way but he just wants brains ( but... not kinda in a bad way i guess?) all he wants is brains, just so he can "survive" or something... m. bison... i guess to change the world of it's ways. you see, these guys have... you could say ambitions. each of them unique in every way. theyre misunderstood. sort of like.......
      those kids that are seen bad by other people... even though they just try to connect with other people, but they fail because they dont know how. when they try to, they get shut down... or something...
      theyre seen as bad guys because the game is telling you so, but in truth they have their own hearts with feelings and emotions too....

      I can't speak for the other characters, but I think the pacman ghosts are just there to fill the role as antagonist. I mean, when playing Pacman, the second a ghost sees you, he doesn't chase you throughout the level till you can eat him. They follow Pacman for a while then they wander down another hallway. Plus, the game is kinda simple; collect all the pellets, don't get tagged by the ghosts. So they have no makings of a true badguy, just an antagonist.

    Could you do a full backstory on Turbo? Because villains from more violent games like Street Fighter didn't go savage and attack other games. I think it goes deeper than just being competitive. Perhaps as a guy outside the game Turbo saw himself as above everybody and made the game his entire life. Which would explain why he couldn't handle not being #1 and his attack made the other games realize that losing themselves too far in their code could have consequences.

    When you've spent your life being held up on a pedestal of popularity, when it's all you know, and it gets ripped away from you - you'll do whatever you can to become popular again. This lends itself to jumping games, and "going turbo"
    When you've spent your life being told you're a monster, that you should be avoided or destroyed, just for being who you are, you either try to change to be accepted by those who have rejected you, or you embrace what they see you as, and live up (or down) to that reputation. This lends itself to sticking to your own game, or "Ralphing" ;)

It's probably more of a common courtesy thing than any other reason, the same reason that you or I wouldn't run around our neighborhood burning everyone else's houses down with a flamethrower or something like that. It wouldn't be good for business or relationships, while being normal and well-behaved is.

Ralph only left his game to be invited into that hotel, to have a spot on the cake, and to feel appreciated. Turbo was obsessed with being the best and favorite racer in the arcade.

      It's an interesting twist where the protagonist of a game (Turbo) is the villain and the antagonist of a game (Wreck it Ralph) is the hero. Their personalities are separate from their in-game personalities because they're sentient beings. Most of the villains (All of the ones in Bad-Anon, seemingly) don't act like bad people, they're just fulfilling a role because, without a villain, their games wouldn't have a foil for the protagonist. As the Nicelanders find out, the villain is necessary for there to be a complete game.

      Beth Miranda are you sure about that? The Disney Princes don't really have backstories or developed characters like the princesses do if you don't count Aladdin or Peter Pan or John Smith, Etc.

    I thought of it as “Ralph is the bad guy in a game where you can’t ultimate defeat him, as he only continues to wreck the building and you repair it as the player. Ergo, Ralph is indomitable. Turbo is just an avatar for the player, and so his code has to be more flexible to accommodate player choice. As such, he can give up, be defeated, lose. After a really long streak of being the best, The player will naturally get bored and seek a challenge, and this is what Turbo does; attempt to be ‘the greatest racer ever’ in every game he can, following the players who gave him that success.”

    Turbo and Ralph go under "the shadow" archetype/trope. They are characters that face similar situations, but have totally different personalities and even character design, quoting tv tropes "Ralph's adventure outside of Fix It Felix Jr.'s is motivated by an innocent need for approval. Turbo is driven by his obsession for recognition. Ralph doesn't intend to harm anyone and sneaks into a videogame simply to win a medal, whereas Turbo is responsible for the destruction of his home world, another nearby video game, and the reprogramming and enslavement of the Sugar Rush world. Turbo's pursuit of respect and acknowledgement mirrors Ralph's, but he is shown as willing to destroy anything that opposes him to get it."
    I love this kind of relationships when it comes to protagonist/antagonist

    I always just thought it was cause turbo was programmed to be a main character/good guy but Ralph was made to be the villain and he didn’t long for the spotlight, also the fact that Ralph made friends along his way to keep him calm and level headed is what turbo lacked and no one helped him at all

    Ralph wanted recognition from the characters in his game.
    Not from other in other games.
    But Ralph wasn't replace with a game and/or character that was better than him at what he did.
    This kept him in a different mindset then Turbo.

  • @dusty5981
    @dusty5981 Před 6 lety +2

    Turbo didn’t want to become irrelevant, so he did anything he could do to stay “alive” that includes invading another game, destroying two games, trying to kill a princess, took over a game, became the villain of the arcade, AND tried to take over the entire arcade
    Ralph, however, just wanted to have the nicelanders to respect him and see that he isn’t truly a “bad guy,” he never wanted fame or popularity unlike Turbo
    Turbo didn’t care if his game got ruined, he was trying to stay popular, that’s why he did those acts
    Ralph was kind at heart, even if the nicelanders found him evil, he didn’t want them, Felix, and their game to die

    38 seconds in, so I'm going to say this before I watch the rest: I don't think Ralph was the villain. He was living there all happy and fine until they built those apartments there. He's just trying to get his home back. That's all he ever wanted. And at the end of the day, he really doesn't want to wreck it, that's just what he's made to do. He really just wants to live there with them as equals. He just wants his home back. He's not a villain at all. He has no reason to go turbo because he just wants his home in *his* game.

    Ralph only wanted to be liked by the others IN his game, whereas Turbo wanted to be the most popular racing game with the players. It pretty much boils down to WHERE and HOW each one wanted their form attention. Ralph didn't want to change his role in the game, he just wanted to be treated better by and be friends with those IN the game with him.

    that was an interesting theory, to say the least. In a nutshell, he never went rogue/"Turbo" because he wasn't programmed to be a narcissist like Turbo was, and on the contrary, turned out to be fairly sensitive. He was just "bad" in that his efforts to seek justice, as programmed, meant destroying the Nicelanders' building.

    Every character in every game have their own role play & in the movie they have their own personalities too, what do i see is Turbo make a decision to do crazy things but Ralph didn't ... as simple as that
