  • 1990 saw the release of Prince's 12th album, and 4th soundtrack record, Graffiti Bridge. Whilst much of the music is up there with Prince's greatest work, the movie was not a commercial success, and led to a change in direction for Prince in the face of a new decade. But what led to this? What was the original concept for the movie and why did it change so much over time? Lay down your funky weapon and join us and we explore all this and MORE!

I lucked out & ended up seeing this before Purple Rain, I was 10yrs old, but wasn't allowed to watch Purple Rain till I was like 15. So I fell madly in love with both & rightfully so. Thieves In The Temple & Joy In Repetition are perfection & 2 of my fav Prince songs alongside Se7en, P*ssy Control, Live 4 Love, Electric Chair, Elephants & Flowers, and Thunder!

I have been listening to this album a lot in the summer of 2020. I did not like it when it first came out, so it took me 30 years to really love it.

Being a huge Prince fan when this album came out, I read all the bad reviews about the movie very similar to UTCM and stayed away from the movie but bought the album, of course. When I first listened to it, I enjoyed many of the songs but saw it as just a bunch of songs mainly because Prince, for the first time, was including many other artists and it was not solely him. Fast forward 19 years later, I found the cd in my Prince collection and decided to give it another listen as it was probably the least listened to Prince album I had. Wow! I was stunned at what a cohesive and completely conceptualized work it Is! It was like a light bulb came on! What a masterwork it is! From confusion to redemption the story plays out through the the song cycle and I never saw the movie! I love Joy in Repetition

Prince was what Tiffany Fitzhenry called below the line by that time. The spiritual themes and shying away from past formulas put him at odds with those who can greenlight budgets. No director of note would touch it because they too knew the fix was in.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions about this project. Although, I probably did enjoy the album more than most people, I have always thought that a large majority of it was culled from Prince's vaults. A lot of this is masked by giving the tracks a more updated mix with studio wizardry, and perhaps some added over dubs. For example the drums on Tick, Tick, Bang are actually sampled from the Jimi Hendrix Experience song 'Little Miss Lover' (Axis: Bold As Love). Otherwise, I would've dated the lead-off track 'Can't Stop This Feeling I've Got' to be somewhere to be during the sessions for the ''Controversy '' album. Also I would've had 'Elephants & Flowers' and the 'Question of You' as being from the "Around the World In a Day" sessions because of the psychedelic experimentation, etc.

remember an interview of The Time at the time the movie was released (it must have been on MTV Europe); they said that when they received the script, it was a The Time movie featuring Prince, telling the story of the group the same way Purple Rain told the story of the Kid. But when the shooting began, things had changed quite drastically... They came across half bemused, half gutted...

The highlights for me are "The Question of U" and "Still Would Stand All Time". I already had "Joy in Repetition" on bootleg, along with an earlier version of "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got".
I love the '86 version of "We Can Funk" but was disappointed by the version on Graffiti Bridge. On paper, Prince and George Clinton together promise to be monumental but it wasn't.
I would have preferred it if the songs sung by others had appeared on a separate disc. The Time tracks could have easily gone on Pandemonium and the Tevin Campbell track did appear on his own album and didn't need to be included here.
This was the first time I didn't get into every track, a trend that would continue until The Rainbow Children which would be the first time since the Eighties where I enjoyed the album from start to finish.
As for the movie, it seems like two movies in one, a spiritual quest and a silly Hollywood musical, the problem being that they get in each other's way and neither idea was fully realized.
Prince may have had potential as a filmmaker, but in order to be really great at it would have required as much time and energy as he spent on music and you can't have total devotion to more than one thing.
I am eager to hear the unreleased tracks. I have "The Grand Progression" and "Big Tall Wall" but I was unaware of "Bloody Mouth" and "Beattown" until watching this video.

I loved “Graffiti Bridge” I know their was a lot of hate towards the movie but I completely understood the concept of the movie and fell in love with it. Although, I do agree that some scenes could have been better with longer lines/better location shots it still was a good movie to me I absolutely fell in LOVE with the soundtrack the first time I heard it but if I had to pick my top favorite it would have to be “The Question of U” that song plus the guitar solo is mesmerizing and simply beautiful I’m so glad Prince picked that song to be on the album 💙💙💙 I believe that Prince was in the middle of writing Graffiti Bridge when Warner pushed him to do Purple Rain 2 and I don’t think he really wanted to do it right then so maybe he just mesh the two ideas in one movie which caused many people to not like it I think Graffiti Bridge should have been it’s own movie and Purple Rain should have been made after Graffiti Bridge it would have given P alittle more time to think of what he wanted in Purple Rain 2 with that being said I completely agree with your statement ‼️

Graffiti Bridge failed as a movie because it lacked gwnuine structure and a solid plot. Why an actual screenwriter wasnt2brought in to synthesize the mish mash of ideas I don't know, but it clearly would've solved a lot of problems and raised the quality of the story.
The songs I like off the soundtrack are:
Melody Cool and N.P.G. (both parts).
