  • In 1998, Prince raided his already legendary vault for the first time to create the CRYSTAL BALL set. Although it has the same title as the legendary 3-disc set from 1987 which became Sign O The Times, the two sets don't have much in common. But how did Prince compile this? What happened with the mail order version? And how did it all play out? All this and more in our latest facts video!

      "Cloreen Bacon Skin" FTW. It's just Prince and Morris Day jamming out for 15 minute of funky goodness. Prince's persona on the track is amazing. "Oh hold it, stop
      . Motherfucker didn't even have the headphones on" kills me every time lol.

    I have 3 favs, one per disk: "Acknowledge Me", "Strays of the World", & "She Gave Her Angels". It would've been "Good Love" for disc 2, but I already had the proceeding version on the Bright Lights, Big City soundtrack. I was also one of those folks who both got the five cd release (on time at that) and eventually received The War as well. I wish Crystal Ball 2 had been released, but Prince was notorious for constantly changing his mind.

    It’s a shame the 80’s tracks weren’t remastered properly and included on the ‘Sign o The Times’ Super Deluxe Box Set. There was plenty of space. Also, the original soundtrack version of ‘Good Love’ is available on iTunes for the low low

    I met Prince at a strip club, late one night. I told him I had found a 200+ page list online of unreleased albums and live sets. I wanted to know what they were and where I could find them. He told me they were bootlegs and NOT to buy them. I agreed but told him I really wanted to hear them, and would even pay just to hear them. He seemed intrigued. I told him there was a song on the list called, Crystal Ball, and I especially wanted to hear what that one was. His very next release was this! Not only did he put Crystal Ball on the release, he named the release after that song. He then also put "Bootleg" on each disc. That release was for me, and you can't convince me otherwise. 😊

    I was madly looking forward to owning this album back in 1997, but I had no internet, was still a student and had no credit card. Then it was released in March 1998 in Italy and I just couldn’t believe it. My father’s aunt (God bless her always) gave me the money for me to buy it and I had my wish granted. I also recall the first time I visited the album’s website at my uncle’s computer, back in 1997; it still retains its charme to this day. And by the way: I printed the rounded version of the cover and added it to my round C-thru 5 disc set, which I eventually bought in 1999. It looked awesome. Thank you, Casey. Always a great job.

    It seems obvious that the best tracks on this set are from the mid-80s, and they're the tracks that are conspicuously missing from the SOTT super-deluxe set from this year. Not that I'm gonna complain about anything they've done over the last few years. 1999 and SOTT super-deluxe are amazing, despite the omissions. But it seems like they left certain tracks off SOTT super-d because they're on this album, and that's too bad. SOTT super-deluxe ends up telling an incomplete story, in a way.

    You Guys ' have done it again, my all time favorite cd , also if I am correct when this 5 disc was reviewed in New York publishing, right around the time of release, bzuc back then Warner brothers record label didn't give in advance release dates, fans where on the computer trying to find it. But my pointe and question is this unknown writer review the whole thing and quoted the 5th disc as new music that diehard fans have wanted to here him sing and sound like again. You know what all the songs that where mentioned was not on there and I think that other album was put in its place maybe, anything possible with prince last minute change. Thanks Casey.

    Love this series and as a die gard old skool fan I still learn something new each time...I'm curious as to why you didn't discuss The Truth at all...I would assume due to any lack of information, but just wondering as it was a hugely innovative and new direction for Prince, an (almost) all acoustic lp...why was it included? How did it come about? Were all the tracks from one session? Etc etc, its arguably the best and most important part if this release. Also Kamasutra...much less important but would be interesting to know anything about it. Thanks!

    I love the Crystal Ball (1998) compilation. It wasn't what I was expecting but, I still enjoy the release. It has some good recordings on it. Some of my favorites is that live version of The Ride, Calhoun Square, Movie Star, and Dream Factory. I find it pretty cool and interesting that some of us have heard much of the Crystal Ball 2 to a degree. I think Crystal Ball 2 would still make a great compilation, even for a possible 2021 release. The Prince Estate still could pull this off for the most part, in terms of putting it together and fans enjoying the release. There's ways around it.

    Thanks for the vid. Happy new year! Was it true that Prince canned Crystall Ball2 and the Roadhouse Garden because he didn't realise the Crystal Ball release songs were under contract from Warner Brothers? They could've sued him for releasing them but chose to let it slide on the proviso he didn't release any others. I totally get why he was so pissed about his music ownership, especially if WB owned everything he made, not just the released tracks, which must've been so annoying as they could make money off something he'd never given to them.

    • @TheVioletReality
      @TheVioletReality  Před 3 lety

      I've heard that idea floated before, yep. But as far as I know, nobody from WB or Prince's camp ever confirmed. It's certainly possible. There was also a lot of discussion around Roadhouse being cancelled due to some kind of post-JW fallout with Wendy and Lisa. But that doesn't explain what happened to CB2.

    And what to say about the Kamasutra album? There are bits of it that are GENIUS. But overall it comes across as a new-age cutout-bin also-ran. With a little bit of selective editing and guidance, and some additional live orchestration, it could have been a legit orchestral work rather than an eccentric playlist for sensual massages.

    Thinking that I actually threw away the original Paisley Park plastic packaging in favour of the record store set. Just decided to store the Kamasutra album in a separate box...it was just so unhandy and clumpsy. Now I regret that greatly 😥. As for the "Crystal Ball" title song itself, it was so heavily edited (compared to both bootleg versions I already owned) in the bass and drum solos that I was really dissapointed!! Best song: Cloreen Bacon Skin and that's kinda sad knowing all the other quality gems he still had sitting in his vault. Mostly I was very disappointed with the set. The acoustic album has really nice songs on it, Kamasutra doesn't really appeal to me at all except maybe one song/part, don't remember which...

    I was disappointed by this compilation to be honest. I remember rushing to Best Buy to get it and I couldnt wait to listen to it. I put it on and I was underwhelmed. I was expecting it to be the original "Crystal Ball" album. Nevertheless, one of my favorite songs by Prince is "Crucial" so thats my favorite (I just wish we could get all of the versions especially the one with Leeds and the version with Miles Davis, and isnt there another version?) "Last Heart", "An Honest Man", "She Gave Her Angels", "Goodbye" and "Dont Play Me".
