- In 2006, Prince didn't just release a new album, but he built an entire world and brand around his new concept "3121", which included a new protege, Tamar Davis, high budget music videos, legendary LA parties, a new website, a perfume, a Las Vegas residency, and a huge PR campaign including appearances on Saturday Night Live, Good Morning America, American Idol, a reunion with Wendy, Lisa and Sheila E at the Brit Awards, and much more. Not to mention, the unreleased 3121 movie! It paid off, with the album making its debut at Number One on the Billboard. Per Wikipedia, 3121 "is the only Prince album ever to debut at number one (during his lifetime) on the Billboard 200." The online source also states the album was certified gold status; which is 500,000 copies.
In the old days, gold status was considered good for a beginner, but not for a major act. Regardless, 3121 is a sold album. Fury; The Word; Beautiful, Loved And Blessed; The Dance; and Get On The Boat are proof that Prince still had the magic touch as a songwriter.

The album that got me into Prince. I will never forget seeing Black sweat on BET. It was totally different than anything I seen and heard for current music at the time

3121 era! Great memories! The live versions of songs like Fury on SNL, 3121, Satisfied, Lolita and Get On The Boat were 🔥 Saw the Tamar/Prince tour as well as Prince and crew on Good Morning America in NYC. Classic Prince.
1 of my favorite albums!
We went to Rio in Vegas. Immense small gig, compared to all of the other Prince gigs I went to. Felt way more intimate. We upgraded to a table and it was worth every penny.
This era was INCREDIBLE, and it was also a wonderful time in my own life. Prince was doing some of his finest work at this time, and it was most certainly a great time to be a lover of his music and his art.

I love your take and aproach to Prince's life, music and legacy. I particularly enjoy the medley played in the Brits Awards and the SNL performance. At that point in time I would listen to his music and be eager to his new material or just his next move. The Twinz were so talented and beatiful dancers of this era, and they'd sing along Prince so well too. Recently, i saw a video of an 11 year old Prince supporting a teacher's strike saying that they'd work extra hours at school and decerve to earn more money if I hadn't enough reasons to admire him and his music. Thanks for posting your impressions on him and all the amazing data. Hope you can continue with this incredible work. Best wishes.
In 2006 is when i became a Prince fan!!! And my life changed i started buying all the music etc
One of my favorite Prince eras and one of my favorite Prince albums. 3121 is in my Top 10 of favorite Prince albums and my favorite from the 2000’s. The Prince I grew up on and loved was back on this & it’s still a massive joy to play this one. I was able to see him twice that year. When he was on tour with Tamar & when he was on Good Morning America all in NYC.
The only thing that saddens me about this time is that even with the promotion and the album hitting #1, it wasn’t the smash hit it should’ve been. I so wish songs from 3121 were on the radio being played like crazy. This was the album that should’ve made everyone rediscover Prince if they didn’t with Musicology or be an introduction to him with the kids. He should’ve been back on the cover of Rolling Stone with this project. Even with the lack of that happening, it’s still a big shining part of Prince’s incredible career & I’m so glad I was a part of it all in real time.

A great era in Prince World. I went to 3 of the 3121 shows, including infamous Michael Jackson show. I distinctly recall Prince leaving the stage and walking to the back of the club. I love this album and YES, release the 3121 movie (my CD does say “The Music”)

Awesome job of recapping. You brought back great memories. I'm surprised you mentioned the Tamar tour. I saw a show from that tour in February of that run at The Congress Theatre in Chicago. I even convinced friends who knew I was a die-hard fan to get tickets. They were disappointed when Prince didn't sing and so was I, a little. lol. My most often favorite songs from 3121 are "The Dance" and "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed". Oh yeah, thanks for clearing up that Carlos Boozer house rental thing. That was my first time having that clarified. Awesome job, here. It's easy to see you are real deal Prince Fam. Cheers!

I remember buying 3121 from a Tower Records that was going out of business. Sadly, my experience with 3121 is limited to only the album, and his performance of "Fury" on SNL (much better than the album cut). My favorite songs are the title theme, Black Sweat, The Word, and Get on the Boat.

My bestie & I were at the GMA show performance. My favorite Prince experience. We left to get in line at 2:00am.
Planet Earth was the album that got me into Prince when I was 16 as it came with the newspaper my mum was reading, and it's a nice album, I love it. So I went through his discog so my next listen was 3121 and this was when I realised I was onto something special

The 3121 era is as u say one of the best times to be a Prince Fam!! I enjoyed traveling to Vegas for the shows, I attended all of the shows during the residency and showed up to all the after shows. Those months were incredible and all the appearances Prince did on TV were wonderful to watch! Thanks for the walk down memory lane!! 💜

Yup I like this album a lot, and like you Kasey 'Love' is my favourite track. Best moment for me in this era, the Brit Awards. Love the way Wendy, Lisa and Shelia were introduced by a subtle close up of each during the opening bars of Ti Amo Corazon and how the whole set racked up from that gentle beginning into the rip roaring finale. At the end the crowd were at fever pitch, and even Chris Evans was lost for words, and that takes some doing.
Best era for me as well!!!!! Seeing the Tamar show both nights in Atlanta, getting in to the private party at Club 1150 afterwards, being a guest at the Purple Ticket Party on Sierra Alta Way, Vegas the weekend before the Super Bowl and Minneapolis 7/7/7 for all 3 shows!! What an exciting time and SO many mind blowing experiences!!! I am forever grateful!!! 💜

I don't care for the album version. And yes, the estate should release the 3121 movie and perfume. Your videos are tremendous with awesome detail. The SNL Fury per4mance was tops in my book, but a close 2nd was the American Idol finale when he literally came out at the last possible second from his limo onto the stage. Seacrest seemed to be even stalling for a few seconds because he wasn't sure Prince was coming out evidently. Some said showing up to A.I. could be construed as him 'selling out' in a sense, but THAT show at THAT time was an unstoppable ratings machine, so I thought it was a great surprise appearance and per4mance with the Twinz.
Oh man, 3121 takes me back! I would drive to work bumping tracks like Black Sweat at top volume, bobbing my head so hard it would fall off my neck! That whole album as my shit! It was everything I could ask for in a followup to Musicology, which I also loved, but, oh boy, when 3121 dropped, I was like "Hell Yeah!" Tracks like "Lolita", "Love", the title track, and of course, "Fury", I just couldn't get enough of. To me, the trilogy of Musicology, 3121, and Planet Earth, represent a period of Prince's last really good albums. Side note: I'm no conspiracy theorist, but 3121 can be translated to 4/21. This is another curious aspect of the numerology that seemed to surround his discography since as far back as Purple Rain. Again, I'm no conspiracy theorist, but some things I just can't write off as coincidence. Just saying. Anyways, I agree: the 3121 era was a great time to be a Prince fan. Awesome times!
Oh and of course the Estate should release the 3121 movie. I promise you: All the purple people are here for it!

I Remember Living in Beverly Hills, on Sierra Alta Way. I Lived about 6 Houses away from the House that Prince was Renting. There were Parties in the House all the Time . When I came home at night, the Valet parked the Guests All the Way Up the Street . And I had Nowhere to Park . I Never saw Prince .
Great video. The up-tempo songs are great. The slower tracks let it down for me, although The Dance is pretty great.
Incense & Candles is My favorite song, and YES, the estate should've released the 3121 movie years ago!
I bought the 3121 perfume not too long ago. It smelled pretty good. I kept the box because its the deluxe box
Yo Casey! 3121 was definitely a magical era. U forgot 2 mention his legendary Super Bowl appearance on Feb. 4, 2007 which gave a big lift 2 his album sales, and he returned to 3121 Vegas just 6 days later.
Superbowl was so huge and so iconic that I felt like it deserved its own video, not just a brief discussion amidst everything else! It sort of stands apart from the era for me, although it chronologically fits of course!
Yeah, freaky Prince was back sounding like the 80s again in a 21st century way.
Oh, and, uh, yeah, release the movie! Prince in Panama, I want to see that. The Latin sound gave something extra to this album.
My favorite memory was seeing Black Sweat everyday on BET's 106 and Park at the number one spot.

I'm one of the few people who bought a VHS copy of "Three Chains O' Gold" ( the visual companion to the 1992 0(+> LP ), during my 3rd year of college ( 1996 ). So, of COURSE I'd buy the "3121" visual companion, if it were released!!
Such a shame about Tamar, though. I thought Prince was being annoying as usual....with his false promises for a protégé . But, since you referenced Universal as the cause for her unreleased ( in the states ) CD....then, I'll give Prince a pass. I'm definitely ordering the Japanese import.😏 I'm also very impressed how much he promoted Tamar and allowed her to shine ( including the "Black Sweat" video ).
Yes, for the "3121" CD, Prince finally got out of his head and allowed the classic funk master to flow. Hence "Love" being one of my favorite tracks, also.....alongside "Black Sweat", "The Dance"....and his religious nods to "The Word" and "Beautiful, Loved & Blessed" (with Tamar). After Prince passed, I was trying to school a 20-something Dominican about Prince's legendary status. I gave him a playlist which began with "Love (2006)". He said he played that song NON-STOP.
Fury on SNL rocked. The Dance is good song also. Good album.
