Just found the show, loved it. I used to play subbuteo with my father in the late 60's early 70's, on a cloth pitch, fence on the table top. My Dad and uncle had the heavyweight teams, We played on a cloth pitch but was amazed at the Astro pitch when it came out, and i still have them. My father and i had a league, 5 teams each, 10 mins a game, and every game was recorded on paper and i still have them records, all 42 seasons. Sadly my dad passed 11 years ago, and at the funeral home i slipped in little Kenny Dalglish into his pocket....i will never get rid of the teams (all 50 of them, worn to death, and as for the records in my dads hand, quite beautiful to read.
Now i have a new house, time to get the pitch out again and create some memories.

Still have mine up the attic. Was thrilled to see the Hibees in the intro to this. My Hibs team have an injury list a mile long (i.e. They are all patched up with glue)! Gosh this brought me back to my youth. My brothers were a good deal older than me (the younger of the two was 6 years my elder) and when they were teens had little time for their pesky kid brother. But the younger of my brothers would play subbuteo with me so it has a special place in my heart. Sadly, he passed on a few years ago, but I will always treasure my memories of our Scottish 8 team "super league" which strangely - and without any fixing ... Hibs won!

So excited to find your channel! I was an American kid living in England in the late 60's and early 70's and I became a huge Subbuteo fan! Sadly, when we moved back to the US I couldn't find any kids even remotely interested in Association Football, so my Subbuteo teams, pitches, etc. wound up entombed in unopened moving boxes and likely got donated or thrown out by my parents after I left home. I look forward to re-living some great memories!!!

I live in the United States and have just got started playing Subbuteo...and I love it! It is very similar to "Electric Football" or Miniature Football here in the United States, with leagues, special bases, special figures and stadiums. Of course I am talking about what you guys call American Football. Go to You-Tube and type in Electric Football for examples. The similarities are amazing...two different games, but much of the same! I just would like to say thank you to all of you guys in the UK for this program! I watch it every month and I have learned so much from you and groups on Facebook. God love you all and long live Subbuteo!!

Love your muddy pitch idea; my brother and I used brown powder paint, a liberal dose of water and a sprinkling of sawdust to achieve the Baseball Ground vibe back in the early eighties. Playing Subboteo with my dad and getting packs from a toy shop in Whitton called Papillon. Which is gone now sadly. Grasshopper Zurich were one of the first teams I got, I still have many in storage if anyone wants to buy some. I might sell the odd bit.

Hi Keith, enjoyed this. I wonder with your knowledge of table football games if you can help me identify a game I had before Subbuteo (it would have been the late 60s or about 1970/1). It was like a tray on folding gate legs but quite stable. Maybe about 60cms X 40 cms pitch size on a hard base. Now what made it different was that each human player had a green plastic rod with a magnet on the end, and this picked up corresponding plastic players on the pitch so in theory you could dribble, pass or drive the player towards the ball to shoot. There were goalkeepers and to the best of my recollection the ball was roughly the size of a Subbuteo ball, perhaps slightly bigger. My Dad and I switched to Subbuteo though because this game, the name of which I can't remember, had a flaw: when tussling for possession your rods got entangled more than you could manouvre the ball cleanly. Couldn't see it on your shelves. Hope Mrs Keith gets better soon, and thanks for any info.

Hi Keith, I just finished watching all these videos and the last episode before this one answered my questions. What a great set of videos. I am going to start hunting on eBay tomorrow. Thanks again for all the hard work putting these together.

Surely you should have a device to make the flick on the test consistent? Great dedication!

Interesting thought Stuart - but these more recent flat based players have already taken the spin out of table football...to take out the human may finish it off altogether!! Being serious - a device would have to be re-calibrated for many of the different bases allowing for changes in height and weight

Just as exciting as real soccer.

Wasn’t there a bbc program on subbuteo but based in Scotland.

Although I was never that interested in Subbuteo as a youngster I must admit that I find your enthusiasm infectious.
I have even been watching the previous editions.
However I do have a little niggle/suggestion: When you weigh the players and footballs you use a kitchen scale to get whole gram answers but, on auction sites, there are scales that claim to measure 0.01 gram available for less than a fiver. Is there any chance of an upgrade soon?
Other than using a robot to do the tests(!) I cannot think of any other way to make your comparisons more fair.
    Enjoying the show,
    Patrick

Thanks Patrick - you make a fair point. Following some helpful tips from another viewer, more mathematically inclined than I, a new method of weighing has been discovered and will be introduced soon.
