2:09 I really feel your rant. I’m Austrian and constantly watch German news. The view that nuclear power is bad is widespread.
It makes me feel a bit hopeless and glum everytime I (try to) explain nuclear power to friends.
The most basic knowledge already helps fighting the knowledge gap. The more people know the higher the chances people would finally start discussing and reevaluating that topic again.
Recently in Spain (and hispanic community in general) the topic of nuclear energy is starting to get discussed and people are more and more positive about it. I hope this ends up spreading to other countries and communities and we can finally do somenthing about nuclear energy
Well I'm from Germany and I'm also annoyed, that not just the government, but most of the media is against nuclear power, if you compare german power CO2 emmisons to french ones, it clearly shows, that without nuclear power CO2 emmisons will stay high, because renewable power will take a long time, which is also because many citizens are against windparks near their towns. So instead of choosing nuclear power, we choose coal power, which is one of the worst kind of energy source, like "Datteln 4". I would rather have tons of radioactive waste deep in the ground, then thousands of tons of CO2 in the air, killing our climate
The view for "nuclear bad" is because incidets in Chernobyl and Fukushima, first being just soviet way of doing things and latter facing way bigger earthquake and tsunami than it was ever planned to get hit. And with fukushima it even hold itself against that earthquake that was "over" it's supposed limit to hold. But you know, nuclear bad because that small chance of failure that causes bad stuff.
Also we in Finland just got the most expensive reactor in the world running (Olkiluoto 3) and it will get connected to power grid this year I think.
@@tims.8184
Fully agree. I can't believe people can't see that if they are not comfortable enough to invest into wind, do not have enough oppertunities to invest into water and solar power is as of yet to inefficient to profit from on a large scale, people will simply go back to the simplest, most primitive but at least executable methods. Burning shit, and using steam. 60% of energy gets lost due to heat!
It's a terrible alternative!
Nuclear energy would be something that would please both enviromentalists and economists if execuded correctly!
@@ReijoRitari
Couldn't agree more!
Finlanf's solution also came to my mind an is one of my most important convcing points.
Another would be that South Korea has developed a reactor that is more efficient, less accident-prone and generates less nuclear waste. My father knows more about that than me, but I still remember the conversation that I had with him about that.
take this with a grain of salt, but from what I heard:
The research of the reactor, as far as I remember was not further looked into by the US because they realized they wouldn't get their hands on plutonium, Otherwise the US would've had it before South Korea.
(though don't quote my father on that. Don't even associate this with him. It is just something an engineer told his kid, 6 years ago)
"Germany has no neutral isolationist neighbours"

as one of the 5 people in germany who thinks that nuclear power is the way to go, this video made me happy :D
I don't recall majority of ordinary working class people being against it. I heard a lot of people saying that renewables are better(and they are).
The only people fully against nuclear are people profiting from russian gas sales, who pay a lot for propaganda campaigns.
@@TheArklyte Not sure, renewables are inefficient in many ways, and require materials that aren't renewable. And less space is needed for nuclear.
Are there only five of us? I bet you there are more. At least 10 :D
Well well well my friends, there are only 5 people in germany who think nuclear power is the way to go, but I see 6 of us (you included) who share this opinion. One must be a spy.
@@pushingboundariesyt will you install full blown powerplant for the sake of small village on an island? Or maybe install 100km of power relays specifically for them?

Finally, Germany brings back nuclear energy
about time
yes
@Ska Boo Thats true but what do you do with the nuclear waste? Its 100% true that the production of nuclear energy is clean, but where do you put the nuclear waste? Thats the problem with it
@@tophatowl6724 Nuclear waste is very-very compact. It's not a problem at all.
@@1kvolt1978 It really doesnt matter how compact it is, it matters that its extremely dangerous and remains dangerous (and polluting depending on where you store it) for 1000s of years. So yea, actually, it is a problem
I think it is fucking HILLARIOUS that the slider for nuclear both makes environmentalists upset.... WHILE DECREASING CO2 EMISSIONS. Really demonstrates how ignorant being anti-nuclear is.
When you built a nuclear power plant, you need a lot of cement and concrete. Also the waste is still toxic. Well we will bury it just deep enough. But this waste can pollute the water. Do you really think the gouvernment will spend more money than necessary to keep a power plant running? They probably put the waste in some old mines and then never care again about it. Yes I think it could be a part time solution, but it is expensive and there is still the danger, that some radioactive stuff will break out
@@narackanick CO2 emissions during construction are nothing compared to the output of any fossil fuel plant. The waste is not a big issue either. Literally. A nuclear plant requires only 27 tonnes of fuel a year. A coal plant uses *9000 tonnes* per day!! Furthermore a single coal plant produces 240,000 tons of toxic waste a year as well!! Would you rather deal with 27 tonnes of nuclear waste or *240,000* tons of toxic waste?
In the end, there is just no excuse for not using nuclear!
@@samueljames0908 Can't a lot of waste be recycled now anyway?
@@DrewPicklesTheDark only in newest reactors. Then you can reuse nuclear waste as a normal fuel but in old ones it's ineffective
@@szimel397 Alright, that would make sense, but it leaves the question. Why not upgrade/create new reactors then? Is it merely a cost thing? I can at least understand from the government's PoV if they have an aversion to it due to costs, at which point it would be hypocritical to claim it's pollution. This could be a great PR for the Germans if they framed themselves as switching to "Clean nuclear with recyclable waste.". But I'm not some expert on the topic so there are probably issues I am unaware of. If it is about money though, I would have preferred they just said that instead of the environmental excuse.
Oh boy, as a German I can totally feel your pain. Whenever the topic comes up and I tell people that I am in favor of nuclear power, I always get to hear "Chernobyl this" and "Fukushima that" and it's so frustrating. Unfortunately the fact is that the public opinion of nuclear power here is defined by that.
Well its rather obvious that it is defined by that though the green party is the most vocal party so people only hear the bad stuff (which is not wrong by the way) however that makes them disregard the good parts
@@thecrazymushr0om570 Jupp.
Both of these catastrophies were rooted in human errors. In Chernobyl they messed up a safety drill or something in the worst way possible IIRC and Fukushima was one of the oldest and not very well maintained or controlled plants in the whole of Japan that was scheduled to be shut down a few months later. Also the earthquake there was pretty strong so yeah.
The real problem with nuclear plants is what to do with the created waste and we don't have any good solutions for that.
The best way to do deal with the impact of power creation on the environment would be to produce less. But that would require people to consume less. Fat chance.
Your government lobbies against nuclear in the EU to sell us gas. Unfortunately, looks like that's what they're trying to do.
Hello Taureor, I really liked your video. As a french citizen (as you probably know, France is very Pro-Nuclear) I have to say that I am horrified and upset when I read or hear about german news, like when they replace their nuclear power plants with coal plants and then buy electricity and gas from Russia while accusing France to be polluting. The german ecologists picked the wrong fight here.
quand on mettra une paire d'EPR2 à fessenheim, ils seront contents ^^
I actually visited a nuclear plant in France once, but what I remember about it most is that you guys make amazing food

When i saw "Fixing Germany the Nuclear Way" I thought you would nuke the shit out of Germany, still this is quite a good video!
"Because the German government has annoyed me recently." Polish-German relations since the beginning of time.
And damn, super based on the nuclear power question. I was in shock when I heard the news Germany was shutting them down.
Honestly, I wasn't, that's the most German thing ever. Their hatred for Nuclear Power is just insane, especially whe presented with facts that don't align with their worldview
Just to say, the German government already tried several times to weaponize the EU court to sue France and derail the power generation of the country (notably by making the main government owned energy conglomerate be broken up and have the country forcefully opened up to foreign companies, that was in the 90's) because they couldn't tolerate a country that relies on nuclear power, ESPECIALLY when said country has a much much cheaper energy than they do and which can create, god forbid, competition. The Germans have hated nuclear power for a long time and have constantly been doubling down on their bad takes, and the consequences have been very clear over the last few months where Germany has had a tremendous spike in energy price whereas France had a much much smaller one. At this point it doesn't even matter if you tell them they are wrong, they'll die on this hill
Just found out that there's at least two more germans who approve of nuclear. Feels great to not be totally alone.

@@zagreus1249 ah, so that's how it's pronounced. Couldn't recall it and forgot to search afterwards.
Yeah. It has something that Democracy series and other games I've mentioned lack - that RPG element. It's basically CK of political sims. You're not an incorporeal force controlling whole country and all its systems with your mind and having perfect feedback and info, but instead a literal guy in charge. Whom no one respects:(
@@TheArklyte
Yeah i do agree with you, an RPG element might be something like a cherry on the cake you know. Would give some life to a political sim.
Yes Nuclear Fission is CO2 neutral and fairly safe but the question where to put the waste + the enormous water use are still very real problems. Additionally there is a very finite amount of Uranium in the world, none of it being in Germany, especially so with multiple countries moving to nuclear. Thorium reactors would be an option though.
I live in Canada, there has been a lot of debate over the years as the region I live in is one of the biggest oil producers, the uranium is here, and it can be extracted, we just need the demand, nuclear waste can be disposed of safely if given proper preparation
@@MyName-lq7rv Now I don't endorse coal whatsoever BUT our current coal reserves are estimated at 35,9 billion tons of coal. In the following I take the 107 million tons of coal mined in Germany (yearly) + the highest import of additional 57 million tons documented in 2014 and combine them to an annual need of about 160 million tons.
Now keep in mind this presupposes that we wouldn't export any coal at all and ignores any advancements in the renewable sector and is much higher than what would be the actual consumption in the decades to come.
-> With this figure of a 160.000.000 tons of coal used per year our current reserves would last for approximately 224,375 years.
Things I didn't account for would also be the large gas industry in northern Germany. So no there is a very slim chance of fossil fuels running out in my lifetime. But then again it's not something I'd like to see anyway as they are better used for the production of plastics rather then transport/energy.
Edit: Not as favourable numbers for gas with the reserves just lasting about 11 years though. For context our energy comes from coal (25%), gas (14%), nuclear (12%) and the rest renewables.

You may be right that nuclear energy is very clean but that's only in the short term. Storing all that waste in the long term is an unsolved problem and quite expensive. When you add the fact that building a nuclear power plant isn't exactly cheap or fast as well, it doesn't look so good.
The legal drinking age in Germany is staggered. 16 for "weak" alcohol like beer or wine and a 18 for stronger stuff.
