The comedy short from the 80s anthology anime Robot Carnival. This is the English version, but even if you hate dubs and only listen to Japanese versions, you should still listen to this just so you can hear the....interesting way the Japanese characters were done. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Robot Carnival is now officially available on DVD and Blu-Ray from Discotek! If you like the movie and want to support it and companies willing to reprint older anime, go buy the discs. I got the Blu-Ray and it's both packed with extras and a beautiful transfer.

Too bad there was no part 2!
i can't help but think of this as a metaphor for the clash of progress and outside forces with cultural identity.
Oh it definitely is
"NOW DEJIRO! RIGHT LEG UP!"
"okhay..."
Oh my GOD I just found this after literally DECADES of trying to remember more details - I saw this in the early 90s probably around age 6, I am guessing my parents rented it thinking an animated anthology called "robot carnival" would be something kids would like... I only saw it once but the two enduring things I remembered were "giant robots made of wood or something" and a scene from one with an inventor who creates a female robot? I can't believe this is real, it's pretty much a fever dream from 25 years ago. THANK YOU INTERNET!
Definitely the least depressing from Robot Carnival. The animation is top notch!
This story should have been developed into a full-fledged anime series, or at the very least had a few OVAs made out of it.
懐かしいなぁ。1996年?あの頃のオタク心を思い出します。
Wow, I totally forgot this existed. I remember seeing Robot Carnival in college. That was 20 years ago.
What the heck is this?
I've never heard of this?
I love the idea of ancient giant wooden robots.
I fully support this man as emperor, giant robots are hard but giant robots in feudal japan are very impressive
Otomo supervised the whole movie as a producer, and was good friends with each of the directors. You can see his influence in certain bits.
One of the best anime around, I remember seeing this when I was a little kid, I think I was five or six at the time. Now fourteen years later, here I am watching this again!
They don't make anime good like this wonderful work here, anymore.
and this is how the mech warrior universe started
Thank you, CZcams, for finally suggesting something AWESOME.
I forgot how fucking awesome the music in this short is. I have no idea why they left it off of the OST. :P
This is probably my favorite one off of Robot Carnival... hell, probably one of my favorite animated shorts ever.
What a high quality! Feel very sorry that we cannot see this kindda professionalism these days.
Ah, I remember watching Robot Canrival back on the SciFi channel back in the mid 90's. I think I was about eight or nine when I saw it. This and the movie Roujin Z is what got me hooked on anime. Thanks for the upload, brings back memories.
Yup Vampire Hunter , Project Ako and Lensman. I remember all of those on Sci Fi
LOL at 3:00
"Ah you jackass!"
Classic! My fave of the Robot Carnival segments.
2:07 - That's my favorite part. I love the long, long pan to the other robot, the guy going "What?!" And then the long pan back to the other robot.
In fact, this was probably one of my favorite of the Robot Carnival bits. Yeah, beautiful animation aside it's not perfect, but it came right after the long, dull, depressing bit with the female robot, so at that time I could've used a good laugh.
I love how, between the two robots, there's a section of the town where the people still seem oblivious as to what's going on (other than, perhaps, the occasional cannonball passing overhead).
I remember watching this long ago on the sci fi channel, Saturday afternoon. thank you for this!
never seen this its superb many thanks!
i was jus about say that the anime around 80 90's has its own touch all 2gether.its brill
@ 4:44 lol his reaction always made me laugh, opening his mouth like that in shock XD ...Man I miss the old days^^
This one was always my favorite.
I bought this when it came out on VHS dubbed. The soundtrack was my very first CD I ever bought :-)
This was my favourite from Robot Carnival. The only downside is I couldn't get the music from the intro.
They should've just made an entire movie around this.
This rocks greatly!
シロツグとリイグニがいる!!
Thats it!Thank you man
the american va is so spot on
I missed this kind of animation.
I love this story and all the others too
Name of soundtrack? I couldn't stop watching though, some of the most hilarious voice acting I've ever seen, frankly I love it. If it's bad then I'll say it's so bad it's great.
Good point Chaloner, the anime of years gone by will always be my favorite....today...they go overboard with the digital effects, not bad...but nothing beats hand drawn anime like ROBOT CARNIVAL!!!
何故いまさらオススメに
This was my favorite bit of Robot Carnival. I love the bug-eyed madman and the kooky robot pilot team. Tenchiro (or is it Denjiro? I can't tell) is also my favorite.
If I'm not mistaken, the bad guy is speaking English in the Japanese version, that's why it's subtitled in Japanese. (And why nerdy boy is trying to translate lol) Almost comically dubbed but this is the version I was exposed to so I love it.
A true classic of anime they sure don't make'em like this anymore this is the real anime.
a relatively absurd parody of A Tale of Two Cities
I like the dubs to these old anime's
for some reason they tend to be much better than ones currently done
@madlexx The first one at the beginning (When the scientist is starting to attack) is omitted, but the second track (When they start attacking each other) thankfully is.
"I'm set..."
I wish more animation was like this
I own a copy of this and love giving it a watch reminds me of heavy metal
ya, that's where I saw it too, had to be over 15 years. I LMAO, at the opening, the fireworks were bombs aswell.
I loved the music for clip
of the animations shown off in the " robot carnival anthology" , A tale of too robots was possibly the most enjoyable one to watch. Shame this one never got turned into its own series as there was always a lot of giant robot animes set in the future and not in feudal japan. oh and they most definitely got a better VA to do the English man for the dub..cant say the same for the main characters tho.
♥️Ha! Loved it!
A brilliant dub!
So this is why Millhouse Manastorm was thrown into the Arcatraz. It all makes sense now.
this would have been an awesome series or OAV.
Both versions are good in their own ways.
where'd you find this, I remember this movie from about 15 years ago. Saw it on TBS. Thanks for the upload.
this should have been made into a full series on concept alone.
anyone know the name of that battle theme?
sounds awesome xD
man battletech was hard back in the olden days
Watching this made me think of Robot Alchemic Drive xD
It's a joke, as they kind of treat the show like an episode of any episodic series without establishing anything much. It also occurred to me that the Japanese group was a lot like the characters from Voltron.
stupind fun in a good way
He's an evil Dr. Snuggles.
Wow...i remember watching this on Saturday Anime on Scifi so long ago its...sad actually. Why did they take SA off?
nossa q incrivel mais um anime q desconhecia
昔ながら凄いな…
the nerdy guy is just fuckin awesome xD
I found it strange that they changed the voice actor to play the "evil genius", considering even in the original he spoke English. Though with a much higher pitched, and even a bit nasal voice.
Him: what's going on here
Mc: the bastard him that's what going on
this is what I consider " real anime". this was before it became popularized and the production value went way down. they sure don't make em like they used to.
Ah the feudal version of Jin Saotome.^^
Anyone know the name of the song that plays throughout the video?
Ah I really want the first song in from this short.. Anyone know the name of it or if available somewhere? I know its not on the OST either..
So far, no dvd of this film exists in North America. There is talk of a release, it's
stalled because the usual beauracracy. I
hope it is released soon.
I think it might be a metaphore for something...
Yes!!!!!!
I can see where that giant robot from Batman Ninja got their idea
Robot Carnival DVD is at anime247 you can find it on google.
i agree.
like Akira for example, the english dubbing for the DVD/BluRay release was horrendus compared to the dubbing they did on the VHS. thankfully i still have it.
13 years
a shame that the song from this short movie is not included on the o.s.t
Of course! I've never heard of it being rude.
where do you get the soundtrack!!!!!^.^
Corrrect, Roujin Z.
Is anyone knows the track which starts around 0:40?
anyone has a link for the ost ? thanks x
@TGGeko They do. It's called Might Morphin Power Rangers and Megas XRL. Are you sure you're in the United States?
Hey, don't you Dare call that guy driving the robot Crazy.. his just having a bad day ok?
funny!
Sci-Fi cartoon quest!!
where is the music for this? its not on the OST
I'm wondering, I don't know why, but, how come this is the only anime that can have characters with Japanese accents and not other anime? It's just weird. But, still the animation is awesome!
Ever heard of Battletech?
愛と誠ちゃん発射☆
japanese culture is soooooo awesome.
I like the English guys Japanese English voice... :/ that's an odd sentence.
@yethboth Yeah, I was missing the subtitles in English and Japanese in this dub. For some reason, they edited them out for some reason.
@TGGeko Same here, they should have at least gave it some closure like Kids Next Door.
I think the voices are pretty great, It was on purpose
@NYCPulpHero I love how this anime know what it is and does try to be pretentious about it.
It's also a rare example from the era where the english dub is superior to the original.
Steve Kramer will be my favourite Voice actor, Even over Cam Clarke (J.Flinders)
I can't hear his voice without immediately thinking of Snake Man from the old Ruby Spears' MegaMan cartoon :P
i need help trying to figure out this one anime I seem to forgot the name of.Its about a machine that was mean to help old people but than it becomes self aware and takes the personality of the old guys wife and runs amok the city. While the nurse tending to the old man is trying to save her
Roujin Z, 5 years too late maybe, but I hope I helped.
鉄戦車か!
