- In this week’s episode we have a look at and listen to the new Wireless ME microphone system from RODE. This ultra-compact wireless system has some neat new features including GainAssist, which can help make recording easier while preventing clipping. The system also includes a built-in mic on both transmitter and receiver so that your camera operator can contribute to the conversation. In this video we test out the Wireless ME’s sound quality, walk through its feature set, and determine the workflows for which it might be most useful. Let’s take a closer look!

*Update - I did some additional testing on the clicking issue. It does not appear to be related to wind and the GainAssist feature. My current hypothesis is that it may be caused by radio frequency interference. Best to turn your phone to airplane mode when filming.
We filmed most of this with the RØDE Capture app. It doesn't have exposure or white balance controls as far as I can tell so the footage is pretty rough. But this represents the most common use case for the Wireless ME - vlogging with a mobile phone. Please don't judge me. LOL
Terrific job, Curtis.
Much thanks! :)
Well done!!

OMG!!! Thank you for this just-in-time review!!!!
👍
Thank you Curtis for the review. The microphone is very boxy/muddy, but RODE’s wireless distance is amazing.
Unfortunately RODE once again made the mistake of slapping a large logo across the the front. Most people use black gaff to cover it as it is a huge distraction. They somehow made it worse with the ME. My suggestion would be to keep the side engravement and remove the front logo as well as the gloss. Maybe they could release colorful cases to protect the TX while also making it look better on camera. At least a white one for weddings.
I don’t think you mentioned this in your DJI Mic review, but the microphone input is indented on the TX which prevents microphones with locking connectors from fully connecting. The RODE Wireless Go II does not have this problem. Ironically I had to buy the Rode Go Lav’s to make the DJI Mic work as my Sanken COS-11D’s and Sennheiser MKE-2’s did not work with it. I’m sure DJI lavs would not be good anyway.
The only thing that makes the DJI Mic worth it is the shape, the record button on the side, and the ability to easily offload files rather than using the RODE Central App. You still have to gaff the logo off the front. DJI also needs a white option for weddings.
Overall I would use the RODE units as actual wireless units since you can use lavs that cost more than the RODE on the RODE. I’d use the DJI mics as quick interview mics where you clip it on and hit record.
The last thing I’m going to say is the RODE’s should have locking connectors because the Tascam DR-10L has them and they only cost $169 now. Thats the only thing I ever worry about with them.
Good insights, thanks for sharing. I clip the mic on with the clip on the outer portion of the clothing to avoid the issue with the massive logo on the top of the transmitter.
Thanks for another great video, Curtis! The clicking noise is the same exact thing I experienced with Rode Wireless Go II, and I experienced it recording with both with an iPhone and Go Pro. I contacted Rode Support and sent multiple audio samples, and they elected to replace the entire system. I had Airplane Mode off during my audio tests. I also noticed that the clicking noise is less (if not, absent) when using the TRS/TRRS cable. The clicking noise was more with the USB cable.
Thanks for sharing. I suspect RF interference.
I love your remark about built in batteries, and also the question regarding dependency on software to change features. Planned obsolescence.
👍
Very good review Curtis. I am enjoying using the Wireless ME. I have the DJI Wireless kit and I think I prefer the ME, although, some of those glitches with different cables can be a concern.
Overall, it is pretty good. Glad it is working well for you 👍

LOL! 😂
Appreciate the honesty of your reviews. I’ve seen a slip in the quality from Rode with build quality (rode nth100) and software (rode caster pro II) I’ve had to use the warranty replacement for both. On the flip side, the wireless go ii have been great. Stay warm!
Thanks, will do!
Thanks for comparing it to the DJI system. So much hype and talk around it, can't be sure it's as good as advertised or just well advertised. Once again, your channel helped me.
👍
Fantastic tutorial, thank you. Curtis can I monitor a recording whilst on some headphones whilst recording on an iPhone?
Great review. Thank you. I’ve ordered it as there was 20% off on an Amazon U.K. deal. I use Sennheiser G3 in my home studio but I wanted something to use with my iPhone for shorts and the ME seems to be perfect for this. I tried to connect the G3 are to the phone but couldn’t get it work. It’s a pity about the ME battery but if it lasts for a few years I’ll be happy with that!
👍
The test you did holding the TX closer and farther reveals the directional pattern of the mic more than the effects of the gain options. When close the mic is on axis, pointing up at your mouth and sounds pretty good. When held at a distance the mic is still pointing up, away from your mouth and off axis. Otherwise a great review as always, thank you.
The polar pattern for the microphone is omni-directional and the idea was to demonstrate how the GainAssist adjusts the gain when the relative sound levels change (by moving the mic farther from and closer to the mic)
Solid review.
Thanks
What I really missing is an in-ear monitoring system as simple and compact as the WG-II. It would be very convenient to transmit the sound from the camera to the sound board or to organize the director's communication with the cameramen, at least one-way.
That's a good idea for RODE. 👍
I would love that too, perhaps as an expansion of the WG2 system, as my camera has no sound output (and is often mounted on a gimbal so a wired solution wouldn't be great)
@@PeterAlanJohnson It also could be great for small DJ work to connect active speakers to dj console, etc. It's strange that there are no offers of such simple inexpensive devices on the market. Basically i have to use systems like Sennheiser, which are quite expensive
You mentioned something about picking up a "clicking" sound. I also have a Shure MV88 microphone and its instruction says, when connected to a phone, to put the phone in Airplane Mode. To avoid a clicking sound. Not sure if that is the cause in your use of the Rode Wireless ME but thought I'd mention it just in case. BTW, enjoyed your review, great job.
Thanks, Joe. Agreed on airplane mode.
This is really useful info, thank you. I experienced irregular clicks being added to recordings made with a Wireless Go set (the original). I reported it to Rode who sent out a replacement but that exhibited it as well and I never really got to the bottom of it. Sometimes it was there and sometimes not. Until now, I'd just not made the connection that any clean recording I'd made was due to me having activated airplane mode.
First of all, thanks for the time and effort you put into making your videos and testing the products in real-world conditions . I've been looking for an inexpensive way to record outdoor walk-n-talk interviews, no video, but the lack of internal recording on the transmitters and the glitches you experienced on the setup really put me off the ME. That leaves me with the GO 2 or the DJI. Or is there an alternative solution I should be looking at?
I’d opt for the GO II.
@@curtisjudd thanks!
Awesome & Thanks :)

Exactly re those batteries! How hard would it be to have 4 small screws at the back and make them replaceable?! Wrist watches can do that why not these?!
Yes.
A great review as always. It appeared that all three mics mentioned have non-replaceable batteries? I agree this is a mis-step. Also, the minimum requirement for me is reliability. The ME seems to fall short in this respect. I suspect most people don't have the opportunity or desire to repeat shoots or events as a matter of course when something goes wrong. Get the reliability rock-solid, then add features, please. Thanks again for the review!
Correct - all three have non-user-replaceable batteries. In terms of connecting and tranmitting sound, we found these to be reliable. The clicking appears to be radio frequency interference upon further testing (still a hypothesis at this point).
Hi Curtis, another great video! I was wondering if the Auto Gain Assist in Auto & Dynamic work on external lavaliers plugged into the Go Me or is Auto Gain Assist only for the internal mic?
Lastly, does Auto Gain Assist lower the chance of clipping or remove the chance of clipping entirely?
Thank you!(:
Yes, and it reduces the chance of clipping.
Thanks for the review Curtis, efficient and thorough as always. As a WG2 user I would like to have known about the possibility I've heard about of mixing ME and WG2 devices?
I did notice a degree of hiss when you were recording both mics in split mode- was the hiss coming from the mic where no-one was speaking? (in which case it is just that the gain is being turned up, and a noise gate would fix it)
Also it would be good to cover the options when using a second transmitter- does that replace the mic on the back of the receiver, or are signals merged (because you now have 3 mics and 2 stereo channels to record them on)?
They’re merged when you use three mics. When you have more mics open, you pick up more room ambient noise.
Thank God for giving you such understanding. God bless you. Please guide me . I think that it can also be used for live programs also by connecting through a mobile / laptop .Is it by connecting through a mixer /amplifier.Please explain
Thank you sir .
Yes, you can connect it to computer or mobile via USB.
Thanks for the thorough review! But one more thing: how does monitoring work on this. Can I playback audio from the phone speakers while the receiver is plugged in. Or do I need to unplug it everytime. Because I mostly use the mic for voice overs and I listen to recordings every take.
Good question, yes, you can play back on the iPhone's speakers.
Thank you
You're welcome
I'm 100% with you on built-in, non-replaceable batteries. I have some very old devices (not just A/V stuff) that I can pop a new battery into and they still work. On the other hand, when the batteries in these little wireless devices fail in a year or two, what are the chances that the time and effort to ship them back and forth around the world to have the batteries replaced (assuming that's even an option at that point) will be something most people would bother going through?
Well put.
Thank you, Curtis, so much for your reviews! Do you know if I can connect it to Zoom H6 so that I can record to it?
Yes, to the 3.5mm input. 👍
Hi Chris, Thanks for the excellent review. Just an observation - most wireless reviews don't talk about bit (24, 32 bit) & kHz (96, 192 kHz). In case of ME, what do we get?
Thanks a ton.
24-bit, 48kHz.
Great overview. Does the dual transmitter split the signal into Left and Right or are both mono? Can you use a set of two receivers within the same area?
in split mode you will record two mono mic signals , one onto each side of the stereo track in the camera. You can split them back out in your video editing software to regain pan and volume control.
Yes, as Peter noted you can set to merged or split modes. In theory you should be able to use two receivers, but i didn’t have two to try. Many people who have tried that with other 2.4GHz wireless systems have had mixed results. Not sure if that would also be the case for the ME.
@@curtisjudd from reading in the Rode Users Group you can use two receivers it if you keep a bit of distance between them- but don’t stack them on top of each other.
@@PeterAlanJohnson And if there isn't a lot of other 2.4GHz activity in the area. 👍
Thanks Curtis.. Does it have any notable issues when recording by connecting it to a laptop. I know there is no need for wireless device if the recording is done on laptop... but that is a multi-utility i'm looking for.
As long as there isn’t too much WiFi in the vicinity.
Noted Curtis. Thanks for your prompt response
I would like to give 2 likes for how you removed your sunglasses and running into the endtable. Great review.
😂
Hi Curtis, do you know that if the second mic is connected does it replace the RX Mic in merged mode?
If you have three mics going at the same time (2 transmitters, plus receiver mic), I believe all them are merged - you can hear ALL 3 on left and right channels.
Hi Curtis, I am thinking about the following. My gh5, a xlr 1 with two vxlrpro adapters, a splitter 3.5 cable and finaly a rode wireless Me mic.
Assumptions. To balance the signal out of the Me, adjust two channels separately on the xlr 1, improve the sound quality over all.
Or, this set up is unneeded complicated, expensive, no real time sound improvement. In stead, just plug the Me in the gh5, adjust settings on my phone and I am good to go.
Pls advise 🙏😄
Too complicated and my bet is that the XLR1 would NOT improve sound quality.
@@curtisjudd thank you Curtis 😀
Hello, does the rode wireless me support the gain assist function if connected through the 3,5 jack to a camera or a an active speaker, for example?
Yes
@@curtisjudd Thank you!

Hi Curtis !! For rodecaster pro with aten mini connected, which one would recommend, rode wireless go II or DJI?
Thank you !!
GO II because the RODECaster Pro II has a receiver built into it.
@@curtisjudd Great, thank you!
I've had the WGo II since launch. I used them daily for a year before both Tx batteries puffed (electrolyte decomposition) and self-disassembled from the pressure. The batteries had connectors, so I unplugged them. First, support gave me a hard time for taking them apart. Then they tried to blame my charger. I was confused about the hassle for a couple batteries. They eventually sent me a whole new system. I was finally told they expect the batteries to last 10 years and have no battery replacement program.
Your whine will go away with a balun like a Rode VXLR Pro (if your camera supports it), or a Foundation Engineering USB Data and Power Isolator. Be careful with cheaper USB isolators since none I found are rated for enough power.
I see they noticed everyone greeking the II and made the ME even more obnoxious. Way to take the hint, Rode.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the batteries.
My work around for the setting reset...Since i don't use the Rx mic, and don't want the merge between tx and rx/or have to change to split each time; I turn off the Rx Mic. It seems to remember that setting. As a precaution, so I know nothing has reset, i set the Rx lights to low, thus I can have a mild reassurance settings are as I left them. I am looking forward to a proper fix nonetheless.
That was the weird thing, the ME mic seemed to reset itself to auto each time we turned it on. But I think they fixed this with the most recent update.
Does it still work as a capture device when the receiver is connected to the Mac?
And thanks for the great review!
It should!
Yes.
How do you access recordings on the Rode Wireless RX with the built-in mic? I can't figure out how to access the recordings, nor do I know if it's recording the sound on the mic. Want to use the Wireless Go Mic Wirelessly without having to connect it to a mobile or camera? Is that possible?
On the Wireless GO, the recordings are saved on the transmitters, not the receiver.
It’s interesting you put the environmental impact of li-ion batteries as cons for this product but not for when you reviewed near identical products, the Rode Wireless Go or Wireless Go 2. Was that because at the time you hadn’t considered it as a potential problem to the environment?
I see it as a bigger and bigger problem now, yes. Time and experience and circumstances changes one's perspective.
HI! How do I know when my Wireless Me transmitter and receiver are 100% completely charged?
Hi Curtis,
Nice review!
I strongly agree with you about internal batteries. This is the main reason I don't buy such a device.
While I'd like to have a wireless system for my hobby activities, I didn't find a low budget one having the below properties:
- Replaceable batteries,-; Low latency; Acceptable self noise; Good connection.
These features may be found, maybe, in Rode-Link as a used kit (to be budget friendly, let's say about €200 used).
The drawback for Rode-Link is really bulky.
Would you recommend in 2023 a Rode-Link, or what would be your suggestion?
Almost all of these consumer wireless systems use built-in batteries. My take is that the RODELink is quite effective. I still have mine and even use that on paid jobs if I need to mic more than I can with my pro-level wireless system.
@@curtisjudd
Thanks, I really appreciate your reply.
I have to think twice if, for me, its size wouldn't be a drawback.
Once I've decided, if that's ok for me, I'd buy one.
@@curtisjudd
Hi Curtis,
Can you please tell me if I have a normal microphone TRS connector (not the special locking one) would it work inside the RODELink female connector that is built with locking thread?
@@ovi.1000 It should, it just may pull out. Also note that if the microphone is not well shielded, I have seen cases where the microphone picks up RF interference.
@@curtisjudd
Hi Curtis,
Thanks tor your time to answer.
After a deep taught I bought "Rode Wireless Go II". I think the RodeLink was a star at its time but It was not updated with more compact technologies.
I couldn-t resist to get something more compact penalizating the robustness.
Now I'd ask you again an advice about microphone. I don't have strict necessities.
I'd pick between Rode lavalier Go and the old Rodelink Lavalier which is about €30 more expensive.
I'm not convinced if there are differences in sound.
What would you reccomend in that price range?
I'm with you on this whole battery thing, it is possible to get very slim and small batteries, you only have to look at the Sony DSC - T7 camera to see how slim those batteries are. In this day and age we should not be making things with non-user replaceable batteries.
I'm sure it isn't easy, but it is the right thing to do.
Curtis, do you think it will be possible to conect Rode ME to Zooom H6 via 3.5 mm input or through 6.5 adapter to one of the mic entrances and AT THE SAME TIME conect it to a smartphone via USB C so that I can record to the Zoom and record a video with the sound coming from RODE to the smartphone? In this way I will be able to have a save audio track on the Zoom.
I did not have good luck having the 3.5mm output and USB cable connected at the same time - ended up with a buzzing noise.
where does the audio recording go on the wireless ME? does it record on the video of the device your using? I cant find anything about it, Just about using the recording software they have.
Yes, you connect the receiver to your camera and it is recorded to the camera
How do I configure this mic if I have Windows 8.1???
Curtis! The Deity Theos wireless mic system! When will you have time to review it?! Sorry I'm shouting! Wireless 32-bit float!
LOL! Hi Chris, well, first they need to start shipping them which if I heard correctly won't be until this fall. But when they do, I'll certainly plan to cover them.
I've regained my composure since my previous comment, my apologies. I thought I was going to have to choose between a wireless mic system or 32-bit float, but Deity had to go and make something I HAVE to own. Providing it passes your rigorous testing. I will try to stay composed until (sigh) the fall. Thanks!
@@chrisjohnston964 LOL! All good!
Mind you, once they announce pricing my excitement may wain considerably.
I assume the rode wireless system works on mic level basis. So let`s have a look at the following scenario, which I have in mind: connect a sennheiser shotgun to a soundmixer (SQN 3M), soundmixer at mic level out to Rode TX wireless to Rode RX connected to camera (BMPCC4K) XLR or TRS in at mic level. Might this work??
Most mixers output line level so you’ll need to use an attenuator cable or a converter line the ART Cleanbox Pro.
Fortunately the SQN3M mixer has a mic output through a 5 pin DIN jack.

is there any difference in distance? Rode states 100 meters vs go2 200 meters, thx
They’re about the same outdoors in my tests.
I have a strong bussing noise when Rode Me is connected to Zoom H6. If I move the cable, the sound sometimes disappears, but even a slight movement makes it come back.
I solved this by connecting Rode Me with an additional extension cable, so that it is far away from Zoom H6.

Even absent the clicking, I can’t see a compelling reason to upgrade from my original Wireless Go, which still works well.
Agreed.
What's the difference to the rode wireless go ii?
Covered that in the video. Use the index if you'd like to jump right to that point.
It's time for Rode to sort out their QC department. The same thing happened with Wireless Go Gen1, and while they handled it really well in my case, I would have thought they would adjust their QC process to avoid future first batch lemons.
Also, I am with you on the battery thing, it's quite frustrating. First smartphones and laptops, now microphones. What's next, cameras with built-in batteries that we need to upgrade every two years to keep them running? Come on!
Re: the clicking issue, I suspect that’s RF interference after further tests. That’s not so much a QC issue as a design choice. People don’t want external antennae so they cannot shield the devices as much like the pro systems.
@@curtisjudd Ah, I see. I had that clicking/humming issue on Rode Wireless Go with certain lavaliers too as they apparently weren't shielded against interference, but using Lavalier Go sorted that out.
it's work with samsung s22?
Not sure buy RODE support should be able to confirm. My guess is yes.
I ordered 2 for customers that need something straightforward because they have failed more than one with both the DJI and the Rode. Third-time charm?! Both using an iPhone on a DJI OM5. Oh, I really wish you could rotate the mic so you could clip it on a shirt and rotate the mic to face UP.
I hope they work well for you! We still stumbled a little bit on the setting to turn off the ME mic.
I don't know if anyone noticed this, that in 2:49, 3:22, 5:04 it has a click sound. Is it on the editing side or in wireless itself?
Watch the first 10 seconds of the video, he mentions this in the cons section
Yes, that’s the click I referred to. Good catch. 👍
Theres also one at 8:30. I think there might be more clicks in the video. I notice a little one at 9:45 too, while writing this comment. Around 11:15 as well, 2 clicks. 13:38, 14:51, 15:38. Ok this is not usable. Thanks for the review. Im staying away from it!
Edit: I watched a couple of other Wireless ME review videos. They all have these same clicks when using it with an iphone; not with a dslr. They're barely noticeable but they're there. So its wireless interference coming from iphone. So anyone reading this and consider buying, it seems you'll be ok using it with dslr with no wifi or have an airplane mode, or with an iphone airplane mode on.
Battery issue is a good point especially with the landfills, but lets be honest, no one will be using these past battery life as new versions and models come out. It gives an excuse to always upgrade and buy the latest model/product. Maybe a trade in system, where you send old ones back to Rode, for a discount on any new one you purchase.
Sadly, that's probably what RODE is thinking.
I am with you all the way about replacement batteries! I have RODE Wireless Go II around 2 years old ( just out of warranty ) and the capacity of the batteries on all 3 units is down more than 60%.
From 7+ hours down to 2 hr 50 min max on a good day. I've contacted rode and basically they pointed me to my local shop that did nothing. So after 2 years of use I can throw away something that was very expensive and that is not usable and reliable for professional work ( weddings ). They basically forcing you to buy new set every 2 years.

Rode did in past very often violate US trademark patents when it comes to consumer microphones. It’s a shame with the batteries… typical Chinese industrial design… where are this mics produced? Please do us the favour and name this things in yours reviews.
Sydney, Australia.
@@curtisjudd this I know… production place.. somewhere made in china on the plastic? Try this set somewhere where a lot of people are with their mobiles. The distance will be reduced very fast to 10 meters or less. Additional it will come to recording interruptions and other little side effects. Rode as Company is placed in Sydney Australia. This means not the microphones are produced there. And it means not that they buy a complete concept including software in china or another country and just make a product. If you see it in Material price such devices can be rated arround 5 to 10$ maximum including microphone capsules. 40$ for marketing and rest is win.
