- In light of actress Lea Seydoux’s casting as Lady Margot in Denis Villenueve’s Dune Part 2 this video dives into the role of the Count and Lady Fenring in the novel to take a look at their peculiar relationship and how they operate in the interests of the powerful figures and organizations they serve. Spoiler warning as I will be discussing events occurring throughout Frank Herbert’s Dune.

The unheard conversation of the Count and Countess Fenring is some of the best in the books. I'm glad to see them added to the movie.
Hello Croaker. And the company, how has it been?
When will we have an adaptation of your stories?
@MultiRedskull still having issues with my kid and Lady. Goblin & One-Eye are still trying to one up each other. Sadly, Netflix passed on the adaptation. We'll have to wait a bit longer.
The Count is entirely missing from Dune Part 2.
@@RodneyGraves they filmed scenes with the Count, but they were cut at the last minute.
@@uberlupe1 Who was cast as Count Fenring?
One of the best aspects of Dune is that it feels like every character is fully developed and you could imagine Frank has a whole book in his head where they are they are the main character.
Whilst they appear only briefly, Count Hasimir and Lady Margot are still very important to the story. Not only do they reveal the workings of both the Imperial Court and the basic Bene Gesserit mission, we get an insight into how a 'proper' sister should behave. Lady Margot might have had some affection for her husband, but she didn't deviate from the role her sisters had assigned her. That Jessica had, with the repercussions lasting thousands of years, it isn't surprising that her actions left a scar on the psyche of the Sisterhood, to the point where they labelled any kind of love as the 'Jessica Crime'.
Just one brief line in the Dune' novel tells us Margot gave birth to a daughter by Feyd-Rautha... and as far as I know, nothing more is said about this child in Frank Herbert's novels. I believe Brian Herbert included her in one of his books but as I've only read two of his sequels, I know no more than that. I'm not sure what Frank's intentions were, and whether he originally intended to introduce her in Dune Messiah or Children of Dune as another antagonist, but sadly, we shall never know. Certainly, , introducing her as a possible concubine to Paul would not have been beyond the Sisterhood: after all, they wanted Jessica to bear daughters so one of them could be bred to a Harkonnen heir. Jessica's bloodline ( which was Harkonnen, remember) clearly had some unrevealled potential the Bene Gesserit were keen to keep hold of!
Speaking of un revealled potential, Count Hasimir himself foreshadowed the coming of both Siona Atreides and Sheeana Brugh and the 'no-gene'. When Paul sees the Count in the Emperor's retinue, he experiences a shock, because in all his visions of the future, he never sees the Count, not once .Paul realises then that the Count is one of the many failed potential Kwisatz Haderachs, but one whose powers were focussed on stealth and concealment. It was this ability to hide from prescient sight that Leto was trying to breed into humans, and achieved with Siona. He must have cursed the Bene Gesserit a thousand times over for breeding Hasimir Fenring to be a genetic eunuch!
That comment is almost a perfect analysis of the two characters, who are in my opinion essential to the story.
Read Paul of Dune, by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson it explains what became of that daughter.
Great comment kudos
very good comment.
I thought all people who are capable of prescience weee mutually blind. That’s why Paul is unable be to see leto
Margot is the most dazzling female in Dune 2, we need more extended scenes with her. Her cunning nature is just mixed with a smart mind & a sexy phisical atractive that made sucumb Feyd. Really her way of talk is a challenging, for that she could conqueer him so easily. And take his essence, all what he wanted Feyd would have given to her in an absolute redintion.
Count Fenring was his first choice to kill Paul after the Emperors forces were defeated. The count refused. Lady Fenring with the voice could have ordered him to do it, she didn't. She warned Jessica about the Harkonen plot that the sister hood was not trying to stop. The sisterhood may have been indoctrinated to bring about the Kwisatz Haderach and she may have seen a fulfillment of that in Paul and rebelled preventing Paul's death. On the surface Lady Jessica wanted to give the duke a son. Her motives were questioned by the reverend mother. The Bene Gesserit sister were not as align under the Reverend Mother as would be suspected. They did not have absolute sway over their own sisters.
I love that you include 2000's miniseries on the Sci-Fi Channel in your discussion of depictions of the Dune story. Many content creators talk as if there are only the current Denis Villeneuve and the 1984 David Lynch versions, and those creators miss a lot of what has been told and how. The 2003 Children of Dune series is also a must-consider when talking about this franchise.
Indeed, imo the miniseries was superior in every way.
I think it's because the first Dune book is more of an adventure genre story, with hidden layers. These only come out in the later books. I think the 1984 movie focused on this outer layer story almost exclusively and the miniseries made the deeper layers shine more.
@@teambellavsteamalicein EVERY way? I wish people wouldn’t speak so hyperbolically. The way people who dislike the recent movie talk you’d think it was something Michael Bay shat out in his garage.
@@Mayakran
To be clear, I meant I think the miniseries is superior to the 1984 David Lynch movie.
To be fair that movie is much shorter and older so it's not really any competition. Dune is such an epic story, the duration of a single movie is just too short to do it justice.
If you have any points you like in that movie, feel free to point them out, it's been a while since I've seen it.
@@teambellavsteamalice I suppose I misunderstood, I thought you were talking about the new movies. I liked the 2000 miniseries a lot, actually, and I agree the 1984 movie was… a mixed bag. I can’t really remember anything from it other than the fact that I HATED the voiceover because the actor who played Paul (I should know his name I’m just too lazy to look it up) had the most obnoxious mouth sounds.
IMO, after Dune Part 2. The miniseries is by far the most book accurate. Villeneuve’s Dune movies are a master class of filmmaking. But the changes made, good or bad, was decided by him. The SyFy adaptation is mocked for being a “high school play”, reusing footage over & over, costumes & set design were low quality, etc. Mostly true but I argue that the reason I hold the miniseries in such high regard. They really tired to tell the whole story as it was written.
I mean, they filmed the Atreides banquet in Arakeen with the local water merchants, smugglers, Liet, etc. They didn’t have to film that but it gave context of how feared Liet was among the inhabitants of the towns. How important the smugglers were and, from which, would resurface later in the story.
Lord Fenring added even more context on how expansive the BG breeding program really was.
Will we hear the Fenrings personal humming language? That could be interesting…they both seem to make hummm mmuuu sounds when they speak anyway.
We need Jeff Goldblum as Count Fenring lol
@@targard.quantumfrack6854 I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING!!!!! He would portray Count Hasimir Fenring perfectly!
I always found the Bene Gesserit attitude toward the Honored Matres hypocritical considering that they used BG imprinting techniques to control males.
Yup. The HM just dialed it up to 11
@@daduzadude1547 The Honored Matres probably ingested HUGE amounts of the synthetic drug Spice instead of Melange, which would explain a lot about them.
@@mariakelly90210 that and breeding for the desired traits, yup
A big difference is that the BG didn't believe in absolute control of a male. HM don't allow any independence. The BG only use it for protection and not every single male. HM are partly descendants of tleilaxu female's seeking revenge.
@@elizabethjansen2684 I think the biggest difference between them was the HM lack of other memory kept them from seeing the long -range consequences of their actions. Also, the drugs which they used instead of melange greatly increased their aggressive impulses.
Can’t wait for part 2. The cast is building up nicely.
It's odd. I know much of the lore you turn into videos but it is always a pleasure listening and watching you set out your pitch. Wonderfully produced too, as ever!

Love it. Think it was smart of the people behind this take on Dune to split it into multiple films.
Interesting. Dune could have easily been a trilogy out of a single book, there are so many interesting, yet underutilized, characters. Lady Fenring and the Count would have been candidates for more. It would give more weight to the final confrontation.
It’s actually a series of books, there is more about them in one of the later books
They can addapt Dune: house Atreidas, Dune: House Harkonnen and Dune: House Corino if they want more
She would seem to epitomize the detachment, calculation, and ruthlessness of her order. She and The Count would appear to be extremely intelligent and capable people, yet not have complete control of their own wills. I would not want to be either of them despite their wealth and power. Great video.
Great comment!!

Or maybe they both are too controlled - at the expense of their humanity.

I'm still afraid they might omit Count Fenring from this adaptation. It would be easy to write in Lady Margot acting as an agent of Bene Gesserit, without ever mentioning Hasimir. And that would be sad for me, since Count Fenring and Fenrings together are as you say a real "power couple" that deserves more spotlight.
Who would play the Count against Christopher Walken’s Shadam?
@@tonymaglaras7022 Dream casting: Dominic Keating with his hair dyed black?
@@tonymaglaras7022 A good question. Even though Shaddam and Hasimir were "distaff" cousins (their mothers were sisters), I think Hasimir was significantly younger of the two. That being said, I think Christopher Walken is a bit too old for the role of the emperor... Anyway... Going by the book, It's difficult to think of an actor that would fit the description. Maybe Christoph Waltz, or Hugo Weaving?... If I disregard the book description, I'd vote to see Mads Mikkelsen for the Count's role, as he was my initial choice for the emperor.
@@empressoftheknownuniverse Yeah, that works for me too.

Your "litany of curiousity" at the end of every video are like Dune's trigger words that activate hidden functions in my brain and compel me to comment 😜
Someone once described DUNE as "a story where everyone's plans fail." Which is true. Lady Margo Fenring is one more example of this--the intricate plans of long term manipulation stumble and fail over human choice and individuality. It literally takes someone superhuman to successfully manipulate mankind on that level for very long, and even then the key to that God's long-term plans was for humanity to overthrow him and take control of their destiny.
Countess Fenring is a great signifier of the Plots within Plots in Dune, I've always loved how you don't get the whole story with her and the Count, just a part of it.
I've only ever heard of Dune, I've never read the books, seen the original movie or the mini series, just the recent Villenueve adaptation, so I appreciate all the information!! Huge thank you. Cannot wait to see these characters on screen
IF you have the time, all the 6 books that are the Dune saga are well worth the time. They are trully amazing.

Top 3 performances in the movie. Lea PERSONIFIED a Bene Gesserit in all her glory!
I really love nerd cookies. The best place for my Dune lore. 🤙🏾✌🏾
I didn't get my dream casting for Irulan (Saoirse Ronan), but I'd be willing to settle for Daniel Craig as Count Hasimir Fenring.
Wait, have they confirmed Irulan's casting? I'm surprised Saorsie won't play her, considering how she and Timothee are contractually obligated to be a film couple 🤭😂
For looks and bearing, I like Elizabeth Debicki, but she would absolutely tower over Paul.
@@davedark27 Florence Pugh has been cast as Irulan. It was exactly the recurring combo of Chalamet & Ronan that made me want to see her as Irulan. But at least Pugh and Chalamet were both in _Little Women_, so her casting is Ronan-adjacent. 👍

Excellent video as always! I just hoped you'd say more about Lea Seydoux.
I always found the Count and Lady Fenring to be interesting characters in the novel, but underserved even in the book. When Paul confronts the Emperor at the end, Fenring knows he could likely kill Paul in a duel, but he doesn't. He basically sees the writing on the wall and steps aside to let Paul dictate to Shadam. I'd like to know more of how Fenring evolved from start to end here. That would be a fascinating story all by itself. Likewise Lady Margot. She warns Jessica, yes. But presumably she knows the exact nature of the danger and maybe even the identity of the Harkonnen traitor - but she doesn't give Jessica the information that would protect the Atreides on Arakis. I'd like more understanding of why she went that far only. (Unless I really missed something in the books - it's a while since I read them.) These two characters have great story arcs on their own, I'd have loved to see that develop more. The movie part 2 has kind of a blank slate to work with - so i wonder if we'll see more of them than we do in the book.
Is Hasamir aware, or in the know, of the Bene Gesserit breeding program???
@@joshualogan7798 I always got the impression he did. As a failed Kwisatz Haderach himself, bringing him into the conspiracy was probably the best way to both control him and make best use of his myriad talents.
@@joshualogan7798 Of course he is. After all, his wife periodically had to fulfill her orders from the Bene Gesserit to go seduce some man and bear his offspring (presumably always female), and the baby would be taken away to be raised in one of the Bene Gesserit chapterhouses.

I was hoping they cast Lea Seydoux as Irulan, but this works as well.
Mads Mikkelsen or possibly Jeff Goldblum as the Count would be sweet. Good "Cookie"!
Thanks elaine and nick. Nice thumbnail. Her from Spector ( bond movie) i believe.
The imagination it takes to write a story like this is incredible. I would honestly like to know how many drugs were involved in this man's attempt to create the world of Dune. Honestly.
The universe may never know........
Some shrooms
A good thumbnail rundown of the Fenrings and their place in the plot - but from a character standpoint, there's something even more fundamental at work. The Fenrings are the comic relief of the novel. Just read their chapters aloud - how they drawl and deflect and infuriate the pompous, self-important fools around them is priceless. And they do it all with a cunningly abstracted, even bored-looking attitude that disguises a deep, mischievous deviousness. The Count eventually brings down the Emperor by refusing to fight Paul, even though he knows that he could win. It's a shame that they appear nowhere else in Frank Herbert's novels - though they make a comeback in the pastiche Dune book "Paul of Dune" by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson.
I seem to have conflated Lady Margot and Irulan's description in my memory. Cool we're getting her in Part 2!
Are there any references to the warning left to Paul's mother to be found in the recent movie?
I had no idea that one of Margot Fenring's distant ancestors was 21st century psychologist Madeline Swann!
It’s so weird that married people in the Dune universe sleep with other people and even have children from their mistresses and other men.
Standard feudal power situation.
See ancient Rome, modern France.
The Emperor should have known the Sisterhood denied him a son to carry on his bloodline. That has never been discussed in the movies. I wonder why he did not proceed to have a son?
It’s been awhile since I read the book. I don’t remember Lady Margot Fenring trying to warn the Lady Jessica about the attack on Dune. Duke Leto already knew it was a trapt by Emperor Shaddam. Duke Leto was already preparing for the attack. Count Fenring and Margot Fenring did attend Feyds battle in the arena on Feyds birthday. The Baron Vladimir Harkonnen did not make Feyd his heir that day. That was the Barons plan and that’s why he introduced Feyd to The Count and Lady Fenring. It wasn’t until under the influence of Thufir Hawart that Feyd tries to assassinate the Baron. That The Baron made Feyd his heir. The Count and Lady Fenring odd speech where they would hum. Was not some secret language. It was the language from Count Fenring home world (if I remember that correctly). Everything else you said from what I remember is correct
I think you should re-read the book then...
Lady Margot left secret message(s) in Jessica's chamber on Arrakis. That was how she warned her. Margot would have known the need to preserve the Atreides blood lines, which meant that Paul had to survive whatever was to come.
No it was a secret code or secret l as language they developed. She is from the same place as Jessica and he is from the capital kiatan , he grow up with shaddam jis mother was the emporers wet nurse, and she was a bene gessurite ( milk brothers) he was a na baron ( heir ) already like paul .
@@shanenolan8252 I think that the code used by Margo to warn Jessica about what was going on was a Bene Gesserit "911" code, not the annoying Hasimir/Margot private language.
@@shanenolan8252 it was on the underside of a leaf inside the private greenhouse that Lady Margot used. It’s a form of braille created (or the original forgotten by everyone else) by BG sisterhood!!!
My guess Denis will combine Count Fenring and Lady Margot into the same character.
From the first time I read Dune, I felt like it was clear that Count Hasimir and Lady Margot had a history. Their plans did not fully succeed in the scope of the book, but to me it was clear that what we witnessed in the book was their regular way of performing their duties, with many secret victories behind them, and this was just another assignment requiring their special skills.
If Paul was not the QH and his bloodline would still need protecting, why did Helen Gaius Monheim plan to kill him if he could not bear the pain in his hand?
Even if he wasn't evolved enough to bear the pain, he still carried a bloodline prepared for centuries so it wouldn't make sense to kill him off.
The Bene Gesserit tested for the quality of being human, as in able to override their more primitive instincts. If Paul had not demonstrated this ability, the BG would have considered his genes of no use, as they would have been inferior.
@@Shan_Dalamani Doesn't that seem a little unrealistic to you? She gave him so much pain that according to her 'no woman could have withstood'.
There were hundreds of bloodlines that the BG were guiding and protecting. Are we suggesting that every single person in all of those bloodlines should be able to handle more pain than any woman could or they are not useful in the bloodline?
@@NR-rv8rz It's too early in the day for "whataboutism".
@@mariakelly90210 You clearly don't understand the meaning of the phrase 'whataboutism'.
Instead, you heard someone use it once and walk away smugly as if they had won a debate and thought it was a magic word that you could just lazily throw out and feel victorious.
Let me educate you.
'Whataboutism' is when people try to make a 'moral' argument to justify something. Such as 'well so what if I lied, Tom, Dick and Harry lied too'.
Throwing out the phrase 'whataboutism' (note how I use single quotation marks and not quotation marks as you did, this is because I and you are not quoting reported speech by a specific individual but instead drawing attention to a commonly used phrase) is not relevant when someone is discussing mechanical systems such as the value of bloodlines. Or even fuel in vehicles. For example, one would not say 'he put four star gasoline in the fuel tank of his BMW so it's stands to reason that I do the same in mine' is 'whataboutism'. The reason being that it is perfectly reasonable to compare like for like in mechanical matters because they are not moral or ethical points.
You didn't understand this so your flippant remark made you look uneducated but now I have now educated you.
A mature person would value the knowledge higher than the sting of being shown to be wrong so would thank the person who educated them. If they were very mature they might even apologise for being glib from a point of ignorance.
Of course, an immature person would ignore the correction, try to argue some lame point against it or attack the person educating them.
Let's see which you are.
@@NR-rv8rz It doesn't matter what I think is unrealistic. What matters is what the Bene Gesserit think is unrealistic. Remember that from their point of view, Paul was not supposed to have existed. Jessica was supposed to have borne a daughter, yet she defied those orders to give Leto a son and heir. Mohiam tested Paul to find out of he could override this animal instincts and thus meet the Bene Gesserit's definition of being human. If he failed, then the program would simply be continued from another branch. The BG never just counted on one single branch of all the lineages they created. Redundancy is critical in this over 10 millennia-long project, as some branches get wiped out by death, accident, or war, or even with genetic anomalies (ie. Count Hasimir Fenring) that make that branch unusable.
Mohiam has her own trained prejudices to overcome where Paul is concerned. Female children are valuable to the BG as they can be trained in many disciplines and sent out to wherever they will best serve the Sisterhood's goals. Male children are more problematic, as they need to accept that they are not the ones in control of the BG's goals, and that their wishes are subordinate. I think Mohiam sensed that Paul would not be a submissive male, and she said it herself, when she realized how much farther she had taken Paul in the Gom Jabbar test: "I must've wanted you to fail."
Well done, Mylady.

I hadn't the fenrings in the new books .( or Paul of dune , book , inbetween dune and dune messiah) hmm. ( they have a Beauty and the best esq quality, as a couple)
I always wondered what happened to Feyd's kid with Margot. I figured they'd pick that particular story thread up at some point in the books but it never came up.
Someone above says the child came up again in Paul of Dune by Herbert's son and Kevin Anderson. I stopped reading the later books when I began developing an allergic reaction to Anderson's writing ...
Dune is such an extensive world that a TV series might be needed to complete the movies , at least 4 seasons even.
true
Count and Lady Fenring are GOOD, but not necessary to the entire story. They're world building characters at best.
Not sure if anyone here asked this yet, but has Count Fenring been cast yet?
On the thumbnail, isn't that the lady from "No Time To Die"?
Now please give me Kyle MacLachlan as Count Hasimir.
Also, important for Villeneuve to cast babes
But who is cast as Count Fenring?

Margot didn't have the same relationship with her husband as jessica as well as being usually in the royal court or direct responsibility to the emperor. So different pressures and until paul directly manifested as as the KH there was no reason to treat him as such; by that point it was too late. Remember the BG thought it was still a generation away. Mostly likely they considered him a failed KH like the count.

Denis Villeneuve, at least as far as the Bene Gesserit are concerned, has a definite tape. :-)
I loved lady fenring . Hmm.. she is a good actress, good casting.
I wonder about her and Fenring.
They arern't major characters in the novel. You can see that by seeing how easily removed they are in the adaptations.
I'm fairly sure that she and Fenring disappear from the Lynch movie and that her and Fenring's function in the novel is so much expository stuff and mood-filler that it is given to princess Irulan in the scifi channel miniseries. Her part in the story is so minor that her warning to Lady Jessica is omitted entirely.
The story seems to work perfectly well without the Fenrings and at this point, after the warning message where she isn't even visible except as the writer of a note on a leaf, demonstrates that the value of her presence in the movie will be debatable.
They are huge parts of the books.
Denis Villeneuve, at least as far as the younger Bene Gesserit are concerned, has a definite tape. ;)
I always understood the term "genetic eunugh" to mean sterile. Am I wrong? Margot and the Count never had children.
The House Atreides book mentions he was sterile.
This video goes around and around but never answers the darn question.
Love Lea Seydoux, but when did Hollywood stop giving Natalie Dormer the time of day? Did she melt too many cameras?

Yes
Lady Fenring was not in complete compliance with the Bene Gesserit. i.e. Maria.
If she was younger, Lea Seydoux would had been perfect for Irulan Corrino.
The Bene Gesserit are not a clandestine organisation.
Definition of clandestine

They're definitely marked by secrecy.
What exactly is a genetic eunuch?
While I appreciate that the old SciFi Channel Dune miniseries stayed a lot closer to the original book...the set design, costume design, CG effects, and acting were all just so cringy.
She is the distant descendant of Margot Robbie, there.. answered it for you 😤
Wait, what? The Bene Gesserit, a clandestine organisation?
When the BG say Jessica should only have female children what does that mean? It’s usually not a choice but maybe the BG could control their bodies in that way? Or do they mean to terminate male babies, bc that’s terrible but kinda tracks with BG methods?
They can control their bodies
Mmmm, I wouldn't call the BG a religious order. They certainly were masters of religious technology, but they're nearly always described as agnostic at most. But they do operate like a religious order, so idk.
From the appendices: "The Bene Gesserit, who privately denied they were a religious order, but who operated behind an almost impenetrable screen of ritual mysticism, and whose training, whose symbolism, organization, and internal teaching methods were almost wholly religious."
Witches! Well, hey that's what everyone in the Imperium calls them. Personally, l don't consider that a negative thing.
I feel Vanessa Kirby will be a better pick for the character tho
Please let that not be Feyd.
Villeneuve is building a boy band.
IMO Korean movies and tv series has the best character arc propagation, considering they also have a number of supporting characters...
In the future, why wouldn't A.I. be able to produce the right DNA synthetically? It could do billions of tests on a variety of DNA types to find the right one, or simply artificially produce it.

Maybe movie makers should look at Japan's Manga and Anime ... a type of media and story telling which include a multitude of characters every time.
Even the simplest Hayao Miyasaki's adaptation or story has more characters than previous adaptations of Dune or even LOTR.
Viewers are not as dumb as they, Hollywood, think they are... just work on them, but then again main characters are hardly ever developed well by them
For as long as they are not in the movie more then 2 min utes ok. Anything else i as stupid as makin g Liet Kynes female
I still think the actress who will play lady fenring is too moody. Lady Fenring was not a moody person.
