How to check cable SATA version - SATA 1, 2 or 3? - Serial ATA 3gb/s vs 6 Gb/s?

  • In this tutorial I show you how to know SATA cable version and cable speed, will SATA 1, SATA 2 or SATA 3 deliver 6 Gb/s? Serial ATA 3gb/s vs 6gb/s? How can you tell your SATA cable is rated at 6 Gb/s? Are all SATA cables the same? Do you have to call then SATA I, SATA II and SATA III to be completely correct???.... YES YES YES YES and YES!! This video should explain it all so you can save your money!
    Remember that any version of SATA cable can get damaged, if a cable won't deliver full speed, it's nothing wrong with the version of it, just that specific cable.
    Hope this helps you save your money and give you piece of mind when choosing PC parts!

    THANK YOU! I've been looking for information about the difference between SATA cables. I always thought there was no difference because the interface between SATA I and SATA III are exactly the same (wiring and connection) and now I know that I was right. I have, however, encountered a bad SATA cable here and there. I was very surprised to find this because a cable is such a (comparatively) simple item. But when I swapped out the bad cable for another one, the problems I was having went away. This has happened to me twice and so that's why I was thinking I may have been using the wrong "speed" cable. SATA cables are short, as a rule. It's not like the signal is going to degrade over such a short run. So I don't know what the problem with these cables could have been but I'm very aware that such a condition can indeed exist. In situations where I'm getting flaky performance, I consider the most complicated problems (like a bad SATA controller or the drive) but if that's not the issue, I suspect the cable.

    Correction: The locking mechanism already existed from SATA II. And as far as I know, there are two types. The one you showed in the video and the rare "Crimping SATA" variant.

    I wanted to give you a big thank you for resolving this for me I should've known this tactic was at play, but I wasn't sure. I was looking everywhere on one of my old HDDs to determine what type of SATA drive it was, 1, 2, or 3? Well, now I know it's all three; it's just the computer industries trying to squeeze more of that green from your wallets.

    • @GMODISM
      @GMODISM  Před rokem

      Yeah old drives are slower, but the cables will not gimp any if them. Slow drives still work well for storage so it's not like one has to get new ones if the system resides on an ssd :)

    Thank you so much ! I am from Argentina, I connected two hard disks that are both SATA 3, to my motherboard (Asus H81M-A) that has connectors for SATA 3 = SATA 6G and I measured the speeds with Crystaldiskmark and it indicates: 231.3 mb/s and the other 114.4mb/s
    What can be ? It would have to be close to 600 mb/s, right?

      Okay good, well the speed of the cable is rarely the limiting factor, what you are measuring is how fast your hard drives can read or write data, those speeds are not abnormal for HDD :)

    SATA type cable does affect drive speed. At least between the SATA I and SATA II & III because 150MB/s (SATA I) can be a bottleneck for fast SSD drives that have real life speeds of 200MB/s and more so...?
    I believe you are doing the very common mistake of misinterpreting Gb/s as the same as GB/s (notice the capital 'B'). 1 Gb = 125 MB. And then there are additional real-life physical limitations that further affect real speed which means it won't even reach those theoretical speeds either.
    Which means that max real speeds are +-....SATA 1 = 150MB/s; SATA II = 300MB/s, SATA III = 600MB/s
    So admittedly SATA III is overkill but SATA I will often slow down modern SSDs. Therefore SATA II or III cable is ideal and with some of the fastest SSDs, go with SATA III only to get max speeds.

    • @GMODISM
      @GMODISM  Před 2 lety

      Their maximum specifications and maximum real life speed is different. I know the difference between the b and B but I tend to say the wrong thing haha 🙃
      So the SATA format is bad for SSDs in general as it will limit speed no matter what, nvme or m.2 format is what's best.
      Anyhow, in testing the cables preform the same, no matter the 1 2 or 3 from what I seen, they only thing to avoid is cheap low quality cables as they might bottleneck speed.

      Many years ago, bought couple red Sata 1 cables having no clips. Just today I tried one of those on a SATA 3 port and SATA 3 drive and windows explorer jammed up hard and could not view the drive. Swapped in a cable with clips and windows worked fine viewing the drive in explorer. Amazing how windows can be brought to sheer unworkability by a single bad cable or drive that is not a boot drive. @@GMODISM

    Sorry but you are wrong. First of all you haven't showed any graphs proving what you say, instead i have graphs to prove that sata, sata2 and sata3 cables actually make a difference. My sata2 cable was giving an 83mb/s read speed vs 130mb/s of sata3 cable. also a sata3 cable on sata2 drive makes the drive slower. In the begining I didn't think this would matter but it did.

    • @GMODISM
      @GMODISM  Před 2 lety

      In fact I am right, your results differ because you have a bad cable or bad connections as a sata3 cable can't be slower than a sata 2 cable as they are the same effectively, here is someone who made extensive testing: www.gamersnexus.net/guides/1882-sata-cable-test-all-the-same , clean the connections and replace that bad cable.
