- Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jamie McLennan are joined by Maple Leafs writer for the Athletic Jonas Siegel to discuss Brad Treliving’s moves in the summer and whether or not the signing of Ryan Reaves will be a good impact on the team.
All the nerds hate the Reaves signing. Look, the term and AAV is high, there's no doubt. But they had to do that because so many teams were trying to get Reaves on the open market. That says something. He not only scares the other team, he fights, hits, has leadership, protects players and makes everyone feel more comfortable on the ice. Jonas Siegel will be proven wrong this year.
Who are these other teams cause based on Free agents this year no one else was in on him maybe Boston or Calgary but at a league min. Scares other teams LOL why he is grit that is all. Peg was in the same div as Min last year didnt even notice him in any games last year save for when Lowry the last 23 sec in a game when our Captian woped his back side.
So now all of a sudden Reaves is no longer tough and you are no longer a nerd?

He was signed because the Leafs have a tepid locker room that lacks energy and Reaves brings that, on and off the ice. The trade deadline arrivals said it during their exit interviews last season; No team dinners or activities, the core 4 guys being on an island, all business and no fun. Hopefully he changes that, doubtful though.

The main thing about Reaves is he likes to be noisy in the locker room..the core of this team seems to be different kind of energy from that..the net result will hopefully be to team’s advantage..
Leafs are a fluff team. You can't teach a Spade to be a Club. A spade will always be a spade.
Why is everyone acting like the NHL won't exist after this season? Seriously, like why can't these people understand that a player like Reeves is good to have around when your star players are in the prime of their career? 1.35 million for 3 years sounds bad until you realize the Cap is going up... I could definitely see one of the talking points after 2027 been "This would've gone better if we had some toughness and push back a player like Reeves or Wilson definitely could've helped during this last couple of runs.."

He doesn’t agree with the signing, it’s much different than not getting it because it’s clear what he can bring to the team that we desperately need. If he doesn’t understand that then he’s not a hockey journalist
the important part about reaves' contract is that it's below or right at the cusp of buryable. Also even though he is more than 35 he does not have a 35 plus contract due to weird addendums added to how 35-plus contracts work.
I think it's around 1.1 million that can be buried in the ahl. If reaves doesn't work out he goes to ahl for a very minimal hit to the cap or someone grabs him off of waivers if they want.
If he goes to the ahl it's around 200 k that will count against the cap. It may be a headache that 200 k, but knowing Brandon Pridham is a wizard with the cap, he has more than likely factored scenarios for reaves and roster management.
Pridham more than likely has a scenario where reaves is in the active lineup, a scenario where he is buried in the minors and the 200 k will get them close, and probably a scenario built if he goes to the ahl and gets claimed.
As far as im aware pridham hasnt been poached yet. Ill put my faith that the leafs have already built rosters with a bunch of scenarios in mind. They will need to be as close to the cap as possible to benefit from Murray's and Muzzin's LTIR salary.
He's got a 35+ contract so they can't bury any of it
@@Lucky30Ape there's something in ruling where if there's no signing bonuses and salary is the same every year then it's not 35 plus contract. I thought I heard somewhere that despite him being over 35 his contract is not considered 35 plus contract

1 year contract would be a great deal! Love Ryan Reaves! but 3 is outrageously terrible move but not my team and franchise see what he can produce and do but a very exciting team in the making!
As a leaf fan I hate the term, but i like the idea of having a guy like reaves , when I fist seen the contract I can’t say I was thrilled and still can’t say I am purely off the term of the deal , but from everything I’ve heard it was the only way he could get him to come was adding a year or 2 compared to other teams so the aav would be lower , again I can’t say I would of made the move , but hey im just a guy commenting on a CZcams video and treliving is an nhl gm

I’m not saying this is a great move or a bad move. But, Reaves isn’t brought in just for what he can do, but also for what his presence will allow others to do.

I don't hate the Reaves contract but I also see the detractors. Look at the final-4. None of them had a Reaves type player. They had pests, sure. But nobody like Reaves.

You’re born with character, it doesn’t suddenly sprout. Your team is your team. Domi and Bertuzzi have got some, Mathews and Marner not so much.
He can be EASILY buried, it’s just money and there’s plenty of ways for it to not count against the cap, no fan should care if they like Reaves, that’s what it cost to get him...

@@bradweirca The NHL and NHLPA signed the Memorandum of Understanding in 2020 that extended the current CBA and that made the buriable max 1.15M through the 25-26 season. It's not buriable for the duration of the contract.

Despite this, and despite having only 6pts in 27 playoff games, he's a plus 2, meaning the opposing teams top lines are down 2 against him in the playoffs. Clearly, he'd doing HIS job. Others need to step up and do theirs.
