U.S. news rarely pays attention to news from Canada, but a touching tribute by Canadians to it's fallen war heroes has caught the attention of the U.S. media.

Over in England the small market town of Wooten Basset used to turn out to line the route of the dead returning. The Queen was so touched by this that she bestowed the title of Royal on the town. It's now Royal Wooten Basset.

I served in our military, and one day my youngest brother called me saying he was on his way back to Toronto, and happened to be right behind the procession of cars in a convoy returning the body of one of our fallen. He was in tears as he described the people along the route all standing at attention, some waving flags, but all showing respect.... I told him that this is whats being a Canadian is about...and it is..

Kastrenzo74, The Government is doing what's in the country's best interest. You got to think of it from his perspective, id imagine a job like his probably isnt the easiest. Politics are never that easy. If you dont stand behind harper than still stand behind the Country and what Canada stands for; your not cynical for saying that. I think it's good that people critic the goverment, thats a right that you have as a canadian and ultimately builds a better country. Just don't mix up what the government stands for from what your country stands for.

Yesterday, a sad, sick, deceived man did evil at the Ottawa soldier's memorial, and tried to attack parliament. Our thoughts must be with the family of the murdered soldier.

I maybe a proud Canadian and have a huge respect for the Canadian Military but that extends to the American Military as well. My boyfriend was a Sergeant in the US Army (he’s now Retired). Both country’s troops have one thing in common, they fight and sacrifice themselves for their country so that they can keep us safe. They’ve seen indescribable horrors that we can only begin to fathom and we won’t know what those truly are until we’ve experienced them for ourselves. They are our heroes. They paid their price for freedom. May God watch over them, protect them, and keep them safe. For those who died in combat while serving, they died a hero’s death. They died by fighting for us and protecting our freedom. May God continue to watch over them in Heaven. Thank you to all of the men and women who have served or are continuing to serve our countries. Thank you for continuing to fight for our freedom to protect us and keep us safe. Thank you for sacrificing your lives for us. Whether you’re in the Canadian or American Military, you are all the true heroes.

This may be from 2008, but we had to do it again last week in 2014 for Cpl. Nathan Cirillio, shot in back twice by a terrorist wannabe while he was standing guard over the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier at the Canadian War Memorial in our Capital Ottawa. He was the second soldier killed last week by wannbe terrorists, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, a 28-year serving member was killed in hit and run in a parking lot at Sainte-Jean, Quebec, he was buried on Nov.1.
Not a, "hit and run" it was cold blooded murder.
I remember a few years ago it had snowed and i was going to my sisters to plough her driveway with my ATV,, I came to a bridge on the highway of heros and there wer 4 very old vets trying to shovel the banks that the snowplough had pushed up against the guard rails, I ask them what was going on ,,they looked exhausted , they said they were waiting for a soldier to come by, I took my snow plough and cleaned it out for them, on my way back there were about 15 men there all in uniform holding there flags up high

I could watch this 1,000 times and still shed tears for a Mothers loss, the Soldiers loss serving his country with pride and bravery. RIP soldier, God bless you Mother.

I saw a cool thing driving the other night (Sep 14), a local fire hall had "September 11th, Never Forget" on it's marquee. We honour American tragedies too.

North Bay has it's own Highway of Heroes. It's Highway 11. And it was lined solid for fifteen miles the day Sergeant Martin Goudreault was brought home. Soldiers, Veterans, Cadets, First Responders, and just plain civilians wanting to say "Thank You"
I didn't know that! Great to hear that other regions are setting up the same thing. We are kind of just outside of the hwy of heroes but we had the terrible 'privilege' to be able to stand for Nathan when he went through our city.
Of course North Bay would- amazing people and city- that doesn't surprise me

It warms my heart and gives me solace in the face of unimaginable loss that the mother of a young private lost in combat takes comfort from her fellow citizens showing up to pay respects and recognition to one of their own. I wish everyone a peaceful and reflective Remembrance Day.
It's beyond me ignorant that someone could vote negative for this. How can you not feel heartbroken for all the lives lost and respect for all the men, women and children who showed their love and support for the fallen heroes who protected our freedoms. We were asked to go to Afghanistan by their government. If you don't want to stand behind our troops then feel free to stand in front of them. Canada, Forever Proud.
yes we have our "highway of heroe's" here, our small way of saying thanks those who served and paid the ultimate price. May all soldiers who have died for our freedom, both American and Canadian all - R.I.P :(
The bridges / overpasses are maybe the 'coolest' thing. There are dozens of them along the length of the Highway of Heroes, and it is regular everyday folk that fill them all along the way.
The family of the fallen soldier is often in the parade of vehicles. We know when one is coming because the 3-4 lanes of traffic are closed.
The Highway of Heroes has signs all its length. It is 175 km long and stretches from Canadian Forces Base Trenton to the morgue in Toronto.
In the end, a very, very small gesture, and really not all that hard to organize and respect. Thank you, fallen heroes.
Thinking of all those families this thanksgiving. Never forget!
We just had a vertan return home 3 days after rememberance day. I felt my city was grieving but 1000 showed up and 1000 of people miles away stood on the bridges. One thing that makes us Canadians is we stand by what's right and respect the ones who fight for us

Too bad they left out the initial 'ramp' ceremony in Kandahar for the fallen soldier. Incredibly moving. Standing ramrod straight on the tarmac as a civilian behind our military men and women listening to the bag pipes, watching his mates load him(them) onto a C130 for the ride home...never felt so Cdn as I did on that far away tarmac.
I have always felt so proud that Canada honoured their dead soldiers.We wait hours by the road just to salute them and thank them for their sacrifice.
It has always sickened me that the Bush/Rumsfeild/Cheney team made it a law that not one of the almost 5000 soldiers in the USA that lost their lives fighting for freedom were allowed a public ceremony, because it would draw too attention to the creepy, evil, greedy leader Cheney.....evil personafied!!

I wear a poppy proudly every day of the year for our troops, it's the least I can do. Nothing would make me happier than joining their ranks someday and being a part of our proud military history.

I hate traveling the 401, AKA Highway 401, AKA Highway of Heros, because it makes me sad to think that many soldiers have returned on the 401 in caskets, while I hate it, I would like to see one someday to send off a fellow Canadian, I wish we didn't have to fight this war on Terrorism
