I tend to a canadian soldiers grave every year for the last 34 years.. my dad did before me.. my son is 7 years old he will take over after i am gone
Panzer Raven - Here's one you will get a smile from. My uncle's grave at Groesbeek was tended by two sisters from Nijmegen for many, many years. A couple years ago, my wife had to get some emergency dental work done while down in Vancouver. The dentist had the same last name as the ladies who had looked after our uncle's grave. I had to ask if he was related to them, and surprise, surprise, he was related.

As the son of a Canadian veteran who was wounded in Groesbeek, I thank you for your undying friendship. I brought my Mom and Dad back to Apeldoorn for the 1995 celebrations and was so humbled for the Dutch people's profound sense of history and appreciation. I think that Holland has given back ten-fold to Canada for what our soldiers did. I LOVE Holland and will never forget the way you greeted him back in 1995. Thank You!!!
When I spent about 9 days in Amsterdam in 1971, packsacking through Europe, I was not permitted to pay for a beer in a dutch pub. When they asked where I was from I responded proudly, Canada. That was all they needed to hear. From that point on they kept sliding glasses of Heineken to me. I will never forget the hospitality they showed me, a 21 year old traveler from Canada. My father, in uniform for 5 years in the Canadian Army, when I told him I was going to Holland, he looked at me with tears and said that they will surprise me with love and gratitude. He was so right! Thanks dad for your service. He passed away in 1975. The greatest man I knew and loved. God Bless the Netherlands 🇳🇱

My grandfather was in the Dutch resistance in world war 2, the story that I remember most which he told me was that after May 5th, the day of liberation, a Canadian soldier who he considered a friend, even though they didn't speak each others language, gave him a dog that he loved for many years named Tommy. Tommy was sort of nickname for Canadian soldiers during that period. The dog was white Canadian Shepherd. Many members of my family have owned and still own Canadian Shepherds, often named Tommy. Thanks to people like your father, I and many others now live freely in The Netherlands, and we celebrate this day and those who made this possible every year.
My Deepest thanks for the service of your grandfather. And you are always welcome here. I would love to buy you a beer.

I visited in 2008. 21 years old. .maple leaf on my bag.....never paid for a beer. Their love for canadians is heartwarming.

a great uncle of mine died as a Lancaster pilot over Dutch soil... I'm so proud of him and feel so at peace knowing the Dutch respect his sacrifice. thank you for your thanks....

Can you imagine what it must feel like? Being occupied, starving for many years and then you hear: "De Canadezen zijn er, we zijn bevrijd!" (the Canadians are here, we are liberated!)
I wish that more people nowadays realize how precious our freedom really is.

My dad was with the Canadian army in Holland in WW2. He told me of a dutch family that treated him like son and brother. He told me the name of the kind family, but I do not recall the name. I would like to say thank-you right back at you. He retired from the army in 1968. He passed away in 2003.

I'm a Dutchman of 47 years old and since my youth i've learned to pay my respect and love for our Liberators from Canada (and of course also the American, the British and Polish soldiers who liberated my country and my grandparents and other Dutch people). God bless Canada! And when I see the Maple Leaf then I think that's the Flag of our liberators and the symbol of freedom!

For some reason, I as a dutch guy aged 24, feel with no other country such a strong bond as Canada. I've never been to Canada but the gratitude and love is instilled in almost every person from The Netherlands. Of course many thanks to the USA, Brittain, France, India, Australia and many more! But Canada holds a special place.

As well they should. I’m American, from St. Louis MO. 20 miles south is Jefferson Barracks. A national cemetery and Air National Guard base now, it’s the oldest military post west of the Mississippi. I’m in awe of this entire generation. The Dutch adopted our war dead who forever sleep in their soil. Since 1944 they tend an individual soldiers grave and pass it down to the next generation. I’m gratified by that and fiercely proud of the way our Canadian brothers fought to liberate and then feed the Dutch. Respect 🇺🇸🇨🇦🇳🇱
Exactly, the sacrifices that Canads suffered for our small little country on the other side of the world was instilled in me during my high school years and through my grand parents that went through the Hongerwinter. My dad would not have been born without your country. You guys are so humble, when I meet Canadians that visit Holland it's almost difficult to pay for your beer. But no Canadian should ever have to pay for a beer with Dutch people around!

He died in 2010. A few months before his beloved Chicago Blackhawks took the cup. I like to think they did it for him. He stormed Juno beach with thousands of other Canadians.

My late Dad was in the Canadian Army during World War 2, and he remembered how the Dutch people were so very happy that the Canadian Army was there to free them as well as help rebuild 🥺🇨🇦

When I hitch-hiked around Holland, I had a big Canadian flag sewn on my backpack.
Sometimes, cars would stop to give me a ride, simply because the drivers saw the Canadian flag facing oncoming traffic. I always made sure they could see the flag.
And sometimes, while I was just walking along, not even hitch-hiking, people would stop, again, just because they spotted the Canadian flag.
They weren't just happy to do it. They were proud.
That never happened to me in any other European country. Not even France, Belgium, or Great Britain.
Well, yeah. Canada is pretty much seen as part of the family here :p

@@jleos0095 Weed is not legal here, it's just allowed by the police as long as you don't have more then 5 grams with you. I however don't use that stuff like most of the country. It seems to be more of a toerist thing.

Me and some friends from college were talking about this a few days ago and we all agreed that we would enlist should the Dutch be threatened ever again. Love your people for not letting those men die in vain. Its us Canadians who thank you.

for me it works the other way around too, if Canada ever came to be in any kind of trouble which i can solve/ help solving, I would do this without a doubt. I even plan to (when I'm old enough) move to Canada.
I think that would count the same way if the Canadians would ever be in trouble like that, the Dutch will enlist of find their way to Canada to fight alongside you or try to liberate you
My grandfather was part of the first liberation and I think it would be a disservice to him and all of his brothers in arms to not join a second if needed. Would in a heartbeat
I couldn't be enlisted due to health issues, but I would just pack up everything and do it anyway if the Dutch people ever needed help.

No, the rest of the allies wanted to end the fuckin war by Christmas so they went with a high-risk plan that left entire divisions of Canadians undermanned and in low supply. Monty fucked up and his dumbass plan got too many good men killed. Meanwhile, our boys were getting bogged down in a crap ton of mud and water. Bottom line, Market garden was an ill-conceived poorly executed plan that cost way too damn much. Oh and by the god damn way you pricks didn't even enter the damn war till your little shipyard got fucked over by zeroes.

I'm Dutch and was shocked when my niece (British Columbia) told me her history classes barely covered the roll Canada played in WW2. She mentioned it in a book report or a show and tell so at least her classmates know every Dutch man and women loves Canada and will be for ever in their debt.
Maybe we want to send a message to our children. If we are obsessed with the past, we shall never move forward. Every year tho, we focus on the alliance of Netherlands and Canada, and why it was important, and why it's still important to us.

in april 1945 the Canadian army liberated Arnhem the town i was born and raised as long as i shall live i will tell my children and grandchildren the tale as it was told by my great grand parents about the liberation of this great and awesome town as long as my bloodline survives you will be remebered thank you and god bless you

When my Dad was stationed with the Canadian army in Germany, in 1955 we went to the Netherlands and were very warmly welcomed. Even when my wife and I went back in 2015, we were still welcomed as Canadians.

My grandfather lost his life in the Netherlands. He frequently wrote to my grandmother and describe how life was difficult for the citizens... he said that he felt fondness for them and was happy to help liberate them. He is buried in the Netherlands.
When my parents went to the Netherlands they visited his grave and for the time they stayed in Amsterdam, they were lodged and fed without charges because they were Canadians. Nice friendship between Canada and Netherlands

My father and his "Visser" family immigrated here to Canada, from Holland/The Netherlands in 1953 on the SS Waterman steam ship to Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I remember hearing stories about the war and the strife they lived through from my aunt and was always very very proud of my family heritage. With a last name like Visser... and being born in Canada... I feel blessed to have such a story to carry on and share to be remembered. Lest We Forget!

My father also came in that time to Pier 21. When my father passed in 2007. I had his name put on the wall at the Pier 21 memorial

My Grandfather, Alec Popoff, was there. He is still going strong in 2019, at 97 years of age! Born in Saskatchewan of Russian descent, he entered the war as soon as Canada declared it. From North Africa and Dieppe, through Italy, the Black Forest and finally Holland, he survived and saw it all. Once back in Canada, he lived and worked in Toronto, northern Manitoba, and eventually retired to Victoria. Now he's with us in Montreal, close to family. My hero!
D. Thank you! I will pass it on. I’m starting a 14 day complete quarantine tomorrow so I can be with him to celebrate his 98th birthday and my 33rd, coming up in a few weeks! So thankful he is with my mom at home, and safe as possible during these stressful times!

In 2015 at age 70 I took my motorcycle to Europe and I visited many Commonwealth cemeteries in Italy, France, Belgium and Netherlands. Even I, the son of a war vet, was thanked. I had a number of people who wanted to tell me their family story of the war. A couple of times I didn't have pay for the gas. Amazing feeling as I spoke to the Dutch.
My dutch grandparents came to Canada after the war ended. I love the Netherlands and Canada, long may they live. For freedom, never to be put asunder.

On July 1 of this year, we celebrated Canada Day. While waiting for the wife and kids to go enjoy some festivities, a documentary came on about Canada's role helping to liberate the Netherlands. I was familiar with some of it but this one really hit home. A bit shocked to hear how brutal the Dutch Nazi's were compared to the regular Germans plus of course, the starvation. They got to the part were some Canadians had made it to a town(forgot the name) and the people started to pour into the streets. They all gathered and began to sing their hearts out. That's when the Canadian troops realized that this was the first time in 5 years that the Dutch could sing their national anthem without fear of reprisals. The old guy they were interviewing said there wasn't a dry eye anywhere including the most hardened soldiers. He then said that at times he wondered what the hell he was doing, fighting on another continent. After that day, he never wondered about it again and if the Dutch people had ever needed liberating again, he would have re-enlisted in a heartbeat. Later that night at an event, we stood to sing "O'Canada". It didn't take much to recall what I'd watched earlier that day so I put more into it than usual. I don't think I will ever take for granted again being able to sing our national anthem.

This is truly one of the most beautiful and honourable display of joy, appreciation, and respect towards fellow man that I have seen anywhere. I honestly believe that out of all the hardships and sacrifices our nation had to go through in the war, we have managed to gain a truly blessed thing out of something as dark as war, and that is a deep and everlasting friendship with the dutch people and her nation. Thank you all, and god bless both nations, their friendship, and their love for one another. We will always be there for one another in our time of need :') 🍁🇳🇱 ❤️ 🇨🇦🌷

I'm a descendent of one of the Canadians who liberated the Dutch (4th Canadian Armoured Div, 5th a/tk reg.) but nonetheless had nothing to do with it. Yet I was always treated very well every time I've travelled to the Netherlands, and people, especially older folk, seemed to revel in the fact that I was Canadian, and would always be very happy and tell me things about Netherlands-Canadian relations. I love the Dutch. The nicest people.

A shout out to the Nijmegen marchers who step off next week. This part of our Canadian military history is one of the many reasons I serve. This military legacy gives all the CAF a lot to live up to and I hope my legacy is that I answered that call with honour.
As long as it's the right choice, not based up on lies like the Americans love to do. Then you will be one of the heroes. You can't really do much wrong if you remain true to truth, honor and don't sink as low as Americans do from WW2 onward.

I went to the Netherlands in 2011. Any bar or cafe I went to I’d get ID’d, but as soon as I pulled out my Canadian passport, I’d be waved through without them even looking at the photo on the inside. It’s something I’ll never forget, the most hospitable people on earth.

As an American, it really bothers me how overlooked Canada's part in the war is. They always puch so far above their weight, even today. I love everytime i get to work with the Royal Canadian Navy.
Great video, I was there the last time the Canadians visited my hometown of Apeldoorn. Very thankfull for their sacrifices.
I did spot a small mistake in the video however. The Canadians didn't blast their way through Apeldoorn, the local resistance got the Germans to surrender just before the first artillery bombardment of the Canadian artillery. Therefor the liberation of Apeldoorn was bloodless, a perfect liberation :).

My Grandmother is Dutch, moved to Canada after the war in 1952, during that year her future husband was fighting the Koreans in the Royal Canadian Navy.

After being born 56 years later that they liberated us, I feel pride for Canada. They where the ones that gave me the things I could own now. They gave us freedom, they gave us evrything a person could ask for. Someday I want to pay the debt. I want to gove service in canadian security. Like being a guard and all that. I will always owe Canada my life. Thank you Canada!

I love the answer of the Dutch mayor on the matter 'You have to be occupied to appreciate what freedom realy means. And when you do you never forgot who gave it to you'. And as a Dutch person who wasn't even born at that time I was teached to see the Canadian soldiers of that time the same way. Not because someone told me to do so. But because the chills of our older generations who have been around at that time went trough in our veins!

I'm Canadian and went to the Netherlands in 2015 to visit a friend for a few days before spending the rest of my vacation in Austria. NICEST PEOPLE EVER! Very helpful, very nice, and always greet with a smile. I had a hard time with my bad sense of direction there and people that were busy closing their business for the day didn't mind to help me find my way. Train station workers helped me organize all the train transfers I had to make on my way to Austria (out of the kindness of their hearts, because they did go above and beyond). They tried to make conversation even if there was a language barrier (some didn't know English and my Dutch is non-existent). Best 6 days ever.

My grandfather fought in the liberation and taught me a valuable lesson... we are all brothers and sisters and if your brother or sister needed help, You will help them without hesitation. I have much thanks and respect towards the Dutch for honouring my grandfather and all our veterans

I am watching this on the 4th of May the day we remember the dead, tomorrow it's liberation day and we owe it to the Canadians , we will never forget god bless you Canada.
We will never be worthy of the sacrifices laid down by this, the greatest generation,. I live my life with my two kids instilling in them the importance of our Canadian way of life and all it took to preserve it. They WILL NEVER be forgotten.

Thinking of those Canadian soldiers brings tears to my eyes. Risking and giving their lives for the liberation of others, far from home.
My grandma always tells me stories about the war and one of them was about a few canadian soldiers that they had in their home for a couple of days before they went back, she told me that they handed out chocolate and gum and when they wanted to give them something back as a thank you gift, they wouldnt accept it. These heroes are the reason my grandma is still alive today. The reason i am alive today. God bless you
My great uncle from the British Virgin Islands fought along side the British and said about the liberation of the Netherlands "it was like something out of a film all the flags, banners, flowers, and colours it seemed as if someone had a wedding and the people of the world where all invited the people all filled with tears of joy and happiness brought you such warmth that you'd grin like a fool for your entire life I'd forever bound to the memories of both the happiness of the Dutch and the harshness of battle I send to you my best of regards to you Beatrice forever yours James J.
