  • This special talk was recorded at the Science Museum’s IMAX Theatre between astronaut Buzz Aldrin and British physicist Brian Cox.
Aldrin was selected by NASA in 1963 into the third group of astronauts and on 20 July 1969 made history with Neil Armstrong during their Apollo 11 moonwalk, becoming the first two humans to set foot on another world.
Since retiring from NASA, Aldrin continues to chart a course for future space travel and is passionate about inspiring the younger generations of future explorers and innovators.
Dr. Aldrin is an author of nine books including ‘Mission to Mars: My Vision for Space Exploration’ which outlines his plan to get us beyond the moon and on to Mars. He continues to inspire today’s youth with his illustrated children’s books including ‘Welcome to Mars: Making a Home on the Red Planet’.
Professor Brian Cox is an Advanced Fellow of particle physics in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester and presenter of numerous science programmes including BBC2’s Stargazing Live.

I met Buzz once at a NBAA Convention in New Orleans many years ago. Inside the convention Big room he was sitting by himself had some papers in his hand and I walked up and I stuck out my hand and he stood up and shook my hand. I thanked him and said “I watched you guys on TV and what you did convinced me to become a pilot…Thank you .” I’m now a 70yo Veteran and retired pilot who had a wonderful life flying around our world.

I saw him driving down the street in an old corvette in Ventura Ca. I thought I would die. I waved and shouted hello and he smiled at me and waved back. I almost drowned in a pool when I was nine and I woke up in a hospital and watched them launch and by the time I got home they were walking on the moon. My Mother said "I am glad that you lived to see this" I thought, yeah me too!

Brian is an outstanding interviewer. He asks the simple questions and lets the speaker "speak" without any interference whatsoever. Amazing. Most interviewers would be compelled to intervene and interject something along the way. But Dr. Cox sits back and does his job. @@shakedown2246 QUOTE: "The radiation belts of the Earth do, indeed, pose important constraints on the safety of human space flight. The very energetic (tens to hundreds of MeV) protons in the inner radiation belt are the most dangerous and most difficult to shield against. Specifically, prolonged flights (i.e., ones of many months' duration) of humans or other animals in orbits about the Earth must be conducted at altitudes less than about 250 miles in order to avoid significant radiation exposure. A person in the cabin of a space shuttle in a circular equatorial orbit in the most intense region of the inner radiation belt, at an altitude of about 1000 miles, would be subjected to a fatal dosage of radiation in about one week. However, the outbound and inbound trajectories of the Apollo spacecraft cut through the outer portions of the inner belt and because of their high speed spent only about 15 minutes in traversing the region and less than 2 hours in traversing the much less penetrating radiation in the outer radiation belt. The resulting radiation exposure for the round trip was less than 1% of a fatal dosage - a very minor risk among the far greater other risks of such flights. I made such estimates in the early 1960s and so informed NASA engineers who were planning the Apollo flights. -- James A. Van Allen" END QUOTE

One of the cues that someone is lying is when they can't keep a story consistent, or when their facts change when challenged. None of these are present when Buzz Aldrin or in other videos Neil Armstrong are speaking so I accept the fact that China, Australia and England exist because of my friends speaking calmly and consistently of their time spent in other countries. Buzz Aldrin is telling a story his stories haven't changed over the years so it stands to reason that based on everything we know he probably you know actually did these things and actually went to the Moon. That was a very daring thing that those three did , Buzz Aldrin , Neil Armstrong , and Michael Collins , back in July of 1969 . Luckily Armstrong was a capable pilot who was cool under pressure , and he overrode the automatic pilot on the lunar module and landed it safely on the moon with seconds to spare .

Enjoyed this years ago, but fun to watch again. It certainly details lots of project as well as political decisions, as was the mood and mode of their route to the ultimate goal.
Amazing that even in the early 70s, there were considerations for progressing on to Mars, but the time and cost seemed to fade, with the required international coordination, there still being more competition than coordination drive,

What wonderful character this man has. I was 13 when he went to the moon. He inspired me then and he is still inspiring me today. Great interview. Thank you.

I want the movie about Buzz, his story was more interesting than Neil's. Overbearing father, dogfighting in Korea, joining NASA, going to the Moon, coming back and falling into depression and alcoholism, then bouncing back. Quite a journey.
