    I read Kranz's book "Failure Is Not An Option" back in 2015 and it was life changing. Such an incredible book. I never in a million years thought I would get the opportunity to meet him. I'm almost done with it. I have never read a book that put me in someone's world view so well. I feel like I've sat down with him and listened to his stories. His style is clean, well organized, and yet surprisingly real in its emotions. His dedication to his controllers, his mission, and to America in the most sincere and unpolitical way is truly inspiring. No jaded jingoism, just a love of his country and his people that shines through a man that gets pumped up by humming "Stars & Stripes Forever" to himself on his way to do the big job. He makes me want to be the best at whatever I'm doing.

    Mr. Kranz is a national treasure. I grew up on Florida’s Space Coast during Apollo, and eventually worked on the Shuttle program for 25 years. I had the opportunity to travel to JSC in support of Shuttle Imagery. A co-worker arranged for a tour of the very same control room with Mr. Kranz. It was one of the most memorable experiences in my 36-year career. We dressed in period clothes and recreated the famous photo of the control room’s reaction to Apollo 13 splashdown. Our guy who posed as Mr. Kranz even had the flat top cut, a detail that Mr. Kranz loved. He posed with us which made it so special. It was a magical day. Thanks again to Mr. Kranz for your time, and sharing your wisdom.

    One thing I've never understood is that when the Apollo 11 lunar module ran low on fuel on landing, where did the fuel come from to get them back off the moon? It's not like there was an Exxon station on the moon

    • @TheLoxely
      @TheLoxely Před 2 lety +1

      I’m not sure but as far as I believe it they had a descent fuel tank down to the moon and an ascent fuel tank back up to the command module. They might have been completely separate so you couldn’t use one fuel tank for the other. Or that if you used some of the ascent fuel there wasn’t enough to get back to the command module. Something like that.

      The LM is a two stage rocket.
      The lower stage gets you down.

All the teams did great work throughout the rest of the mission. As well as Lovell, Haise, and Swigert. And the astronauts on the ground who supported the recovery effort.

    Where is this restored flight control room located? In JSC or in the Smithsonian museum?

      It's located in Johnson Space Center. I've been inside there and sat at the same desk that Mr. Kranz is sitting at in this video. The volunteers who restored the room have done a remarkable job in making it look and feel just as it did during the Apollo missions 50 years ago.

    Glad to see he got his haircut squared away. He let it grow out to almost 1/2" in the hippie era.
