  • Reyes plays with his usual magic stroking. Last few 8-ball racks of race to 8. Sore loser Earl tells Reyes: "You're very lucky." Excellent commentary by Mike Sigel. And be sure to also watch THIS amazing Efren Reyes match: • *Magical* EFREN REYES ...

    I loved it, when Earl said, "I'm so glad this is over."
    While I think he's one of pool's greatest players, like some world leaders, his biggest downfall is his mouth.
    And, from what I've heard him say, so many times, he doesn't understand why people seem to like Efren, yet, don't seem to like him. Unless he actually NEEDS to "spout off" to shoot so well, he'd probably be one of pools most liked players, if he'd just keep his mouth shut.

    Earl, each time I've watched him lose there's always an excuse, He can't admit that the other guy played well, like now it's not like it was rubber game, Reyes whipped the pearl out of Earl which caused him to whine like a girl.

    • @raycarltonbilliards5798
      @raycarltonbilliards5798  Před 6 lety +4

      I've known Earl for 30 years. He's a top-level pro and he's a very driven champion. and excuses are how he *temporarily* rationalizes his own mistakes and self-disappointment after any particular loss. He knows, what we reasonably all know -- that the Universe somehow distributes roughly equal amounts of good and bad luck to almost all players, but our skill-level , self-control, and patience on any given day usually makes the difference in the outcome. Your real opponent in pool -- is yourself! And when Earl is in *realistic* mode, long after a given loss is over . . . he knows that very well. High-pressure pool takes a lot of courage to endure, and us sideline observers generally respect that degree of courage and the wide variety of personality traits among the champions who've opted for a life of professional pool. When Earl's away from the table and relaxed, you won't find a more pleasant guy to spend time with.

      Agreed. The fast mental reflexes of one of the smartest men to ever hold a cue. One of the very respected regular commentators on pool videos (Billy Incardona) once said after Efren flawlessly ran 9 racks in a race-to-9: "I consider myself fortunate to be alive at the same time that this genius (Reyes) is playing pool."

      Anytime Efren -- a naturally quiet and thoughtful man -- says anything about *anything* pay close attention because it's invariably a gem worth remembering. He's that combination of attributes very rare in human history: a *humble* genius. Einstein is another example, and exactly like Efren, had that same gentle, contented smile in most public situations. Sure of his own strengths and not troubled by needless envying of other people.

    Earl is just a sad, sore loser. He is always throwing a tantrum when he performs poorly and when his opponent wins. Sore losers should just stay home. I find his behavior sometimes as that of a deranged individual. I am really disgusted by his attitude when he loses a match and refuses to shake the winner's hand. Btw, you don't insult your opponent by saying he got lucky. Earl is the representation of poor sportsmanship at its worst. Cheers :)

    It doesn't matter what Early says.What matters is how Reyes understood. And I don't think Reyes liked it. If I was Reyes, I would completely misunderstand. I mean come on man.... after all those shots you did, someone comes and say heyy you were very lucky over there...
    Excuse me??? Lucky??? Are you f.cking kidding me? It must be a bad joke.... Almost all of the shots Reyes did are difficult and could be missed easily and no one would blame. However, Reyes doesn't play to put the balls into the pockets... He also thinks and predicts where the cue ball will end up. Even the presenter says these shots are super difficult. And at some point, he goes like "let's wait and see what Reyes will do, maybe we will learn something." It means even they are impressed from Reyes playing and they can't see what Reyes sees. I think Earl is just pissed off and he is angry.

      Exactly right. I've known Earl for 30 years. He's a top-level pro, but when he says that word (*luck*) to any opponent he means it pejoratively and as his own interpretation of the outcome. He's a very driven champion and that's often how he vents his anger and rationalizes his own mistakes and self-disappointment after any particular loss. We all know the Universe somehow distributes roughly equal amounts of good and bad luck to almost all players, but our skill-level , self-control, and patience on any given day usually makes the difference in the outcome. Your real opponent in pool -- is yourself! And when Earl is in realistic mode, long after a given loss is over . . . he knows that very well. I love Reyes but I think there's some truth to what Strickland is saying about him being lucky. BUT the thing is, luck is also a part of a player's skillset and without his skills of putting the ball anywhere near to being lucky, it won't matter. The "lucky" Strickland is saying would be like me smashing the cue ball as hard as I can into a cluster of balls and hoping for one to go in. Reyes is he knows where to hit the ball so that it will bounce on the rails and go to a pretty accurate location to bump the object ball in.
    I guess what I'm saying is... I will miss you Efren. You are a legend.

In every action there's an opposite reaction so, there's no luck involve...Unless...unless, If you shot the ball with your eyes close and it sank...You're pretty dumb lucky. Yes, those items spell out the requisites. Executing them consistently enough to win local, regional, or international competitions is a different matter -- and that's why we so greatly admire players who are talented, dedicated, and knowledgeable enough to do it year after year. One of history's greatest players, Willie Mosconi, wisely said: "Pool is physics by trial and error."

      Jeffrey: For many Americans and Canadians -- equally intelligent as you and I -- in that time period (and even now) it was more reflexive to see, hear, and pronounce, the word "Efren" as *Ephrem* because of the multi-season, *hugely popular* FBI TV series starring the oddly-named *Ephram* Zimbalist. In any country, sound-alike prenoms and even surnames are routinely and erroneously conflated even by highly literate folks. Can happen with any language.

    come on Earl. you can't make a rookie mistake like you did on your last shot and expect to beat someone as good as Reyes. there is no doubt you are one of the best 9ball players to ever live. but in this 8ball series with Reyes you got beat up some of it was your own doing.

      been around both of them and watched them play hundreds of times and I believe they have a pretty close record against each other. Reyes is a much steadier player and kicks better than anyone I have ever seen but when Earl is in stroke.....it's pretty close.

    I can understand his frustration. Before the match the interviewer made it sound like he has already lost. Still when he was fishing for pity was pathetic and his disrespectful handshake and comments to Reyes were disgraceful. He made a ROOKIE mistake and should be a man about it. Hall Of Fame... not in my book. Not if this is indicative of his demeanor and attitude towards the game and his competition.

      I agree with the first part but I would say it is unfortunate if that is the only criteria. Tomorrow may emerge the goat who destroys Reyes every time they play. But he is a disrespectful ass who drives away viewers and alienates billiards from the public. It should matter.

    Efren was a pool hustler in the late 60s and early 70s in towns of Pamapanga and Bulacan. He used to come in the early hours of the night to challenge the locals and before the midnight, he would go away with the money of the men who played with him.

    • @raycarltonbilliards5798
      @raycarltonbilliards5798  Před 5 lety +9

      Desi you might like hearing about Efren when first came to the US in the early 1980s. He played hundreds of challenge matches using the pseudonym "Cesar Morales" and cleaned out the best of the best in about nine different states. All of his hustler opponents and their backers went broke *every* time. He was virtually unbeatable, and his *real name* and country of origin eventually emerged (he was always -- fatally -- presumed by opposing gamblers to be a visiting player from south of the Texas border and seemingly very lucky whenever he made impossible shots at just the right moment).

      @@raycarltonbilliards5798 why did efren use different name?

    • @raycarltonbilliards5798
      @raycarltonbilliards5798  Před 3 lety +3

      Because 40 years ago USA players were starting to hear about a young Filipino player named Reyes who was becoming known as an unbeatable pool gambler. No photos existed in the US. Efren wanted to win all the money he could -- incognito -- before they realized who he was. Same reason anybody disguises his/her real identity to accomplish a goal that real identification would hinder. Reyes wanted to be thought of as a player from south of the Texas border.
