- Braving sub-zero temperatures, Paul is in St Petersburg, sampling layered honey cake, and vatrushka, a delicate curd tart. Yet it's the Russian pies, with intricate pastry patterns covering sweet and savoury fillings, that steal his heart.

Paul is so polite, no bad language, a pleasure to watch and listen to...thank you
True
And kinda easy on the eye, too.

@@ez2733 I think he just made an innocent joke, I don't think he wanted to offend anyone
Totally agree, so nice to watch a gentleman!
You're right: St. Petersburg is like a fairyland picture book!
What a great episode. My wife and I spent 8 days in Saint Petersburg in 2019. Absolutely beautiful city and the people are wonderful. If you ever get the chance to visit Russia, I highly recommend it.
"City Bakes was one of the best series. Shame it did not run longer but what was done was excellent.
Mike Wurlitzer sometimes shows are better for leaving the audience wanting more. 😘
Hi Mike! Season 2 is on the "UK Panel & TV Shows" channel. 10 episodes- and this time 45 minutes long! Enjoy :)
Agreed
Omggggg the history in this episode was remarkable
hi, dear friends, i am from Russia, and i am here to tell you this: no, its not freezing outside all year, as some of you could imagine. Another thing is that you don't have to drink vodka every 5 min with every meal - we do have a very reach and old tea traditions and fireplaces almost everywhere in st. Petersburg, but unfortunately this video does not say a word about it. All the best.
Thank you for sharing this!
I was in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) as the chaperone for 88 teenagers (and my septuagenarian mother) 3 weeks before the fall of The Soviet Union. One of the most amazing trips in my life and so happy that I was able to show my oldest daughter this “Window to the World!” Happy that Paul appreciated the history, architecture and legendary food (it wasn’t quite that legendary in 1991!). Waiting to see if he visits the Peter and Paul Cathedral! Spaceba Paul!
Tell us more about the trip please :-)
He’s just the total package isn’t he? Love his shows.
This guy is my new favorite to watch. So sweet, funny and cute
This is such a fun series to watch. Each episode is well produced, featuring a blend of culture and history from the point of view of ... specialty foods from each location.
Well said
@@andreeailie9053 really? well produced, he's a boring white bread baker that makes crap to represent such great food and places he sees, too bad they didn't have a better baker to represent, it could have been good
@@peterkompter2417 Nothing wrong with Paul. A genuine warm guy.
@@peterkompter2417 Having a bad day? Relax and stay out of youtube comment section.
You have taken me into places that I have heard about but will never be. I love your adventures in the name of pastry and bread. I have enjoyed these tremendously. Thank you!
I've been to St Petersburg. Such a beautiful city.
That’s called rich culture, authentic and amazing art 🪄
Paul is genuinely so sweet! With the horses that was so cute.
I was in Leningrad before the name change back to St. Petersberg.. glad to see all this loveliness..
St. Petersburg is truly amazing city. I married a Russian woman and had the pleasure of visiting several times. The whole country has some amazing food. The bakeries in the villages can hold their own when compared to the ones Paul visited in Peter. I’ve been to them all. I’d love to go back, but under the current global situation, I’m not sure when I will be able to return next.
"global situation" you mean russia starting a stupid war and killing innocent women and children in the ukraine?

It's delicious to see when people are proud of what they do
I like the architectural analysis of the honey cake👍
Love this series with Paul Hollywood. I can't click fast enough !
Me too!!

Wow what a beautiful city 😍
Thank you for posting this. I was in Russia many years ago and I remember how difficult it was to leave. Such a special place and lovely people.
Thank you for this kind comment! I am from Russia and it is so nice to know that you liked being there! 🥰🥰🥰
WOW ! I had never really cared or seen much of Russia ,but now that I see it IT IS SOOOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL !!!!!
I am off to St Petersburg ASAP
"Medovic" is really an absolutely beautiful treat . ...So good ! I tried it in London for first time, in a Russian caffee ..and Im addicted 😋
Awesome, that last baker got a handshake!
The dough of the honey cake being brittle and closer to a biscuit is a very common practice actually. Most people I know make their medoviks like that.
Edit: Just wanted to add that there is a group of Russian cakes that work on that principle, which is why it is absolutely essential they be made a day before, so the cream has the chance to saturate the dough.
I’ve been watching a lot of this series, I find them quite interesting. I’m very lucky in that I’ve been to all the places, of the videos I’ve seen so far, including St. Petersburg a few times. I went into the Church of the Spilled Blood, it’s magnificent inside. This is a beautiful city. Nice to watch these videos to remind me of where I’ve been. I’ve worked on cruise ships for over 15 years which is why I’ve been lucky to see so much of the world.
Next time I may be feee to go with you
„looks like a massive meringue“ .. love this guy haha
oh my those pies...rabbit...chicken rice...cheese mushroom and potato...
They look delicious.
There wasn't anything in this video I wouldn't eat. Food looks absolutely incredible. Wow. What a treat.
I love RUSSIA!....AMAZING BEAUTY ❤

So many wonderful things about Russia and all the countries Paul visits. So many wonderful, creative people throughout the world! Food and especially baked goods certainly brings people together.
You should go during white nights in summer, you can really enjoy the city L.ove your show. You have combined my two favorite videos about food and travel. You should visit also Caucasus region
How Paul is not 450 lbs. is a mystery. Saint Petersburg though, is beautiful!
I just stumbled into this guy accidentally or maybe through the CZcams algo about an hour ago via his Belgian food trip. Wonderful, excellent and lighthearted couldn't say anything bad about it it's just a great way to pass the time away. So after Belgium I'm here in Russia with Paul again as a guide. 👌
I loved St Petersburg when I was there in 2007.
What a excellent display of the culture. I came to watch the bakeries.
Russia is top of my pops and St Petersburg truly is the most grand and beautiful city (out of >70 countries lived, worked or played in). Visited right after Soviet collapse when the nation was in terrible suffering, St Petersburg shone as a magnificent jewel ... and I love & admire the solid sincerity and soulful stoicism of Russians too.
"Soviet" (local councils administered by elected officials by worker citizens) did not collapse SOCIALIST collapsed as it always inevitably does.
@@eddesa5134 Corporatocracy Castles of Capitalism not looking so good these days either .. like a snake eating it's tail ... at the head are the insatiable oligarchy.
@@deecapetown capitalism looks much better than socialism , believe me. I left Soviet Union ( Leningrad) in 1991. Never been back……maybe one day…….
@@olgarogach8868 all you remember is perestroika chaos, not the socialist time.
@@yuliavorf3831 absolutely stupid comment. I lived in the Soviet Union for over 30 years. Do you know me so well ? You couldn’t possibly know what I remember. Лишь бы брякнуть какую нибудь чушь.
hi Paul. Another really nice video. cheers!
This video makes me happy and sad. I always admired Russian culture, including language, art, and especially FOOD. I always told my family I would go visit Russia for a summer. It pains me that my goals of visiting Russia are most likely never going to happen now because of the conflict.
I was thinking the same thing. I really liked the Eastern Europeans I've met while in France and Italy; they were warm and friendly. Maybe some day when things get better...
It pains me too. Russia, my love, who broke my heart 💔🖤🖤🖤
I LOVE THIS EPISODE OMG!!!! Russian culture is amazing! So glad that he did this.
Thank you, Paul! So much respect for Russian culture and history don't come around that often anymore, very pleasant exception. Cheers and kudos! 💖
You look smashing with this Russian hat, and I love all you're great episodes Mr. Paul Hollywood ! Vancouver, Canada !

Thank you for your kind words. You should visit the Ural region in Russian, which has a wide ethnic, cultural and culinary variety 🥰😍
You should have been there in the summer! It’s even more beautiful, especially during white nights!!!
Unique....truly magical city....thankyou for taking new Zealand person on another wow journey...♥️👄👍

Paul always takes a bite first, never offering a share to the Baker or anyone else. It's just he, himself and his.
Damn what a beautiful country❤ Just like a dream ❣️

"Have you heard? There's a rumor in St. Petersburg!" 😙
Monica Bellucci, Ornella Muti and Gina Lollobrigida...I didn't think other countries knew about the last two I listed especially...cool!!
Italian and French movies were and still are very popular in Russia. They are way better known in Russia than in the US.
Beautiful traditions! I'm glad they restored so much of St. Petersburg.
Chef go around filming is amazing

"Freestylin'" a pie....LOL
13:54 It's actually the summer palace of Elisabeth I who named it after her mother Catherine. Catherine II ("the Great") built just a small neoclassical annex. The lavish rococo palace wasn't her taste.
Watching this in February 2024

He wore a hoodie to a Russian tea hall to sample caviar? Stay classy Paul Hollywood.
Because Russia is so classy?
The contrast is funny thou
Wow, Russia is so beautiful!
Paul, I like your accent!
I don't know how this got on my time line, but what a delight to watch. ☺️🥧
Hi, Paul, next time go to Siberia for us; I read a lot about it in Ken Follett's novels!
i spent a year in St Petes, it's a beautiful city both in the winter and the summer - in the summer the mosquitoes are huge...
Are you talking about St Petersburg Russia or Florida?
I am so surprised - what a delight Paul is ! I nearly didn’t watch because the only other time I saw him was on the Great British Baking. Show, he was such a sour pus and a bit of a of a bully ! I love this Paul, I like to think it’s who he really is.The show is super interesting and entertaining.
Esta parece que hace muchísimo frío buen programa
