  • The DDJ-800 is Pioneer DJ's latest entry into its current line of controllers for Rekordbox DJ that adopt a club-style layout similar to that found on a CDJ-2000NXS2 and DJM-900NXS2 set-up. We check it out in this review.

    Nice controller, Im glad Pioneer came out with the DDJ 1000 first with the bigger jogs I love it, I would have purchased the 800 for the new jogs alone not knowing about the bigger mechanical wheels which I love, I dont know if Pioneer has changed their marketing but I like it.

    Brought these in Feb 2021 and I gotto say this controller is excellent totally underrated. Mainly for streaming live on twitch and Tiktok, the small form factor allows me to have it in a flight case with a decent external Mixer next to in a relatively small footprint. Sound quality is excellent. Was considering trading up to the 1000 for the bigger jogs, but honestly I really still serves the purpose.
    No issues at all with it.. Abit of a fingerprint magnet but nothing but a microfiber cloth doesn't sort.

      Loving it already. Pioneer gear is very easy to use. Would love a few more knobs in the future (but no biggie for now as Beat and Pad FX are great). The DDJ-800 is brill and will allow me to focus my mixing and FX skills.
      THE BIG DIFFERENCE IS BEATPORT LINK. By no means perfect but it's bloody THERE.
      DJing just got MORE FUN and INTERESTING. Discovery is key in DJing. STREAMING is like hanging out at a record shop TESTING OUT 12's for hours.

      @@josephreed6323 So far so good. Tried Beatport Link and Soundcloud Go+. Both not bad, but would prefer Tidal on Rekordbox though. Access to a streaming service was the main reason I bought the DDJ800. The machine on the whole is solid and brilliant, pad FX are fun and can be quite silly, jogs feel great, pads feel brilliant, but prefer Traktor's FX units, but on the whole it's a very good move so far. It's a Hardware Unlock controller too, so (Core) Rekordbox 6 is FREE. No complaints with unit and for me the only next move I will contemplate is a move to a Prime 4 or just adding a SC5000 to my set up just for Tidal support and decks 3 and 4. I DJ for FUN, so not worried about clubs set ups, etc.

It's great in the mix and don't know why it's not on the 800 set as a button. seems like they missed a trick there. Only problem on my 400 is the pitch seems to float around a bit on it's own. Weird

    Hey Joey, can you comment on the mixer bit of the controller regarding 'scratch-proofness'? I read somewhere it's made of acrylic which is scratch-prone especially around the cross fader. Are there any third-party fascias that can be installed over the top? Great review BTW! I think I'm getting either this or the DDJ-1000.

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  Před 4 lety

      The face is not scratch-proof that's for sure! Got a few scuffs on mine already (mostly due to rough use during gigs haha) just be careful and wipe down with a soft cloth (microfibre is good). If you want everything to be pristine for when you re-sell it, try getting a skin

    • @manny_f
      @manny_f Před 4 lety

      @@digitaldjtips Thanks that's very useful info. Sadly I couldn't find any skins where I live but I might be able to print one out and cut away the holes for the knobs etc. Of all materials, acrylic seems a very odd choice especially for a DJ mixer, which is bound to take a beating. The glossy finish does look good but so does the material phone screen protectors are made of, which would have been a better scratch-proof solution. NI controllers used to prominently feature acrylic face plates but their latest S4 mk3 doesn't which I think is an improvement. Otherwise the controller looks pretty solid. Thanks!

    Having the Loop controls up top seems counterintuitive compared to the X and Z controller arrangement, I know the CDJ is like the 800 and 1000 but I prefer loops by the pads and faders. Plus I don't like the idea of long press to activate.

      Thank you very much! I tried using 3 of the 4 decks on the DDJ 800 after reading your reply. I figured it out, but it surely isn't as intuitive as having 4 channels. I played around with this feature for about an hour before I decided the DDJ 800 isn't quite what I need. I'm returning it for a DDJ 1000. It just felt a bit clunky trying to mix with 3 decks with 2 channels. Thank you again for your help and the excellent review!

    Nice video. The main thing I don't like about the DDJ-800 is that it isn't priced like the DDJ-RR. It's $200 more for something that's basically the next generation of a Pioneer semi-pro 2 deck Rekordbox controller. It makes no sense to me

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  Před 5 lety +2

      It'll probably get closer to the DDJ-RR price over time.

  • @l337z0r

    DDJ 800 vs XDJ-RR? I mean, what's the point of a compact portable controller when you also need to carry around a laptop to use it? Going for the XDJ-RR seems more sensible.

    • @l337z0r
      @l337z0r Před 5 lety

      If you're looking to easily transition to a club setup, get the 800 purely for the mixer/effects section so you can practise.
      The RR is great, but doesn't help with that (it uses the old style effects at the top of the decks)

    What do you think? Is this controller still a good choice?
    The DDJ FLX6-GT is missing a few features and the DDJ-FLX10 is too expensive, so there's not really much choice given that Pioneer hasn't updated this product.

    • @BartoszMtysiak

      If you have money I'd go for standalone( for example xdj rx). DDJ 800 is still good, you can get stems on it. I own it and It's pretty decent but i'm slowly missing 4 channels. DDJ flx6 isn't worth it, not really 'professional'.

      @@digitaldjtips in traktor the samplers are running like a normal track on a deck. In rekordbox it seems that you can't run them on a specific deck. So I can't use effects and volume faders for samplers. It's that true? If so I need to stick with Traktor.

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  Před 4 lety +1

      In Rekordbox, there are separate sampler volume controls, and you can run the sampler through the FX you just select the sampler in the FX source. For some this is actually better, as you don't have to tie up one of your four decks with your sampler.

    • @joelhernandez4956

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  Před 5 lety

      The quality is similar as far as I can tell :) if you don't like the extra features, and especially if you don't care about big jogwheels, go for the DDJ-800.

  • @AnthoRock27

    I love DDj 800 and I like it more than the DDj 1000. I have a question. Why do people say that ddj 1000 is more professional than ddj 800? I think that the difference is only the diameter of the jogs and the number of channels. But apart from some details, to me is the same controller, so why do people say that?

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  Před 4 lety

      You've already mentioned two big factors there - the jogwheels are the same you'll find on the Nexus range on the DDJ-1000 and it has 4 channels instead of 2 so you can hook up external gear etc

      There is a DDJ200, 400, 800 and 1000. The logical next step is a DDJ600 and they need to leave a good price gap for that to fill. Having owned my 800 for a week now I feel like I got decent value for money for all the features it has. The DJM900 beat effects are worth a lot to me.

    I have a 1000, just save up for the 1000 if you're trying to decide. It's a beast and it's not that big. I'm a big guy so I can't imagine scratching or mixing on something even smaller than the 1000. I don't really know who pioneer is targeting with this because the 200 bucks is worth it. I got the1000 coming from a ns7 because I wanted to get comfortable with club cdj setup without spending 5k. I feel totally confident that I could get behind a DJM-900 or CDJ-2000 and be just fine now. Especially since I just can connect them to rekordbox with no problem.

Even when in in a studio working with 2000NSX players , I set them in Hid mode and use Serato instead of thumb drives. I guess it's safe to say that you like the unit?
