- I'm calling this motor a Yamariner. Its a Mariner with a Yamaha engine. In this episode I time the motor and discuss all the linkage in order to time the motor. Which is idle 3 degree and advance timing at 21 degrees wide open throttle.

This is an old post but I love this 40's I've got 2 of them ... Timing ok n Yamahas are about setting up linkage by MM's scale each link set accurately and carbs synked... she'll run fine
@Showmethefish I bought an old 1987 Mariner 40hp twins cyl. I knew when I bought it that it needed the gear case rebuilt completely. I knocked that out without to much complication. Oh yeah, the day I bought it, the owner started it for me, so I knew it ran. Took it straight home and compression tested it. 140 on both cylinders and so I was again, stoked, with my purchase. Got all nee bearings, seals, and impeller on the lower and she's been ripping ever since. I love that dumb outboard. Thinking about buying a second for a full performance mod. Porting, timing, etc..
I know this is an old post but great job....I have the exact engine....had an idea issue this fixed it right up.....
My first boat 1980 40hp yamariner
i hope it stays together.
Hi mate just found your channel loving the vids from ireland . I'm about to buy this motor myself so video was great .
Ps. What was the book you used with info for this motor for timing an carb settings ? Thanks m8 I'll keep on scrolling 😉
Hi the magnetto lever connected to the stator on my engine is very sticky and doesn't turn smoothly. Any idea what it could be?
Probably needs some grease and check your carbs.
The linkage that you are talking about on adjusting it. The one that advances the timing as you accelerate. Where can you find those. My motor someone took the linkage you are talking about as well as those ball joints they snap on to. I would love to get my motor running again. It will idle perfectly but I cannot accelerate due to that linkage and those ball joints please help
I'll see what I can come up with?
I would appreciate it I went to the mariner sight and a few of the pieces are discontinued. And before those parts disappeared this motor ran great
