- Number two of our Sperenberg videos. Sperenberg in Germany was the first site where Wernher von Braun tested his rockets, before the research was moved to Peenemünde.
The site was overrun by the Red Army in May 1945 and became a key location for the Soviet forces in East Germany. The airport was a designated transport airfield and also housed Mi-24 attack helicopters for defensive purposes. On a normal day you could see the Mi-8 helicopter, An-12, Il-76 and An-22 aircraft as you can see in this video from 1994. The pilots were always very enthusiastic when we were filming. When flying sailplanes in Grufziadz (Poland) I could See AN22 flying above me because of the VOR there and then I thought:
Mercedes inside?
Wow!
Could you See loading Stolen Mercedes in the Transport Aircraft s? I read about this in Der Spiegel
I did see sometimes cars being loaded in the An-12's.
