The Antonov An-225 Mriya was a strategic airlift cargo aircraft designed and produced by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Soviet Union. It was initially developed during the 1980s as an enlarged derivative of the Antonov An-124 airlifted to transport Buran-class orbiters.

@@ABANDONEDCHANNEL68 The AN-225 made its first flight on the 21st of December 1988 taking off from the factory aerodrome in Svyatoshyn. The airplane was flown by a crew headed by Oleksandr Galunenko. Mriya was developed for transportation of the Buran shuttle orbiter and components of the Energiya carrier rocket. The AN-225 was also expected to be used as a flying space launching site in the reusable aerospace transport system (MAKS) with the airplane making its first stage and a small-size space shuttle with a fuel tank - the second stage. Mriya can deliver extra-heavy oversize cargo to any point on the globe carrying it either inside the fuselage or on external stores. Two AN-225 airplanes were built. Construction of one of the aircraft was completed. Fuselage and tail unit were assembled at Antonov Kyiv Mechanical Works facility in Kyiv, while the wing center section and outer wing panels were assembled at Valerii Chkalov Tashkent Production Association in Tashkent. The wings and wing center sections were transported from Tashkent to Kyiv on the An-22 Antaeus (Antei)

My grandfather died in early 90's, when I was 3 yo. He worked as an engineer on the Antonov plant in Kyiv city, Ukraine. His job was design and layout of appliances in the cockpit. "Mriya" (in Ukrainian "The Dream") was a secret project, nobody was allowed to talk about it outside the plant, even with their families. Dad told me that one day Grandpa came from work with burning eyes and said they are going to build something absolutely stunning. These were the only words he was allowed to say to his wife and kids. And it was true. An-225 even in 2020 strikes people's imagination. Somewhere in the cockpit there is part of soul and hard work of my grandfather. Proud and grateful to my grandfather and other Ukrainian and Soviet engineers, designers and plant workers. R.I.P. Grandpa, your Dream still flies!

I got to go along with my brothers three separate times to watch it be loaded, once I got to see it land, an amazing sight. The Experimental Design Bureau "Antonov" OKB-153 was established on May 31, 1946 by a decree of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks and the Council of Ministers of the USSR at the Novosibirsk Aviation Plant named after V.P. Chkalov, Russia. Antonov Oleg Konstantinovich was appointed chief designer.
In the summer of 1952, the OKB, on Stalin's orders, was transferred to Kyiv with the entire staff.
It so happened historically that the communists of the USSR in 1922 allowed Ukraine to use the land of the Russian Empire with Russian factories located on it (this is the entire southeast of Ukraine). When leaving the USSR in 1991, Ukraine "forgot" to return to Russia its land with these plants (this is a huge territory of 2/3 of the entire territory of Ukraine) Study this question yourself.

Many inaccuracies: this aircraft was not originally Ukrainian. Ukraine received it as a legacy from the Soviet Antonov design bureau. What did Ukraine do in this plane - they simply repainted it in Ukrainian colors. The plane itself was developed by order of the USSR government for the Soviet space program. Of course, the Antonov Design Bureau was Soviet.
