  • With the six powerful engines, loads of up to 250 tons are no problem for the Antonov An-225. The plane was originally intended to take the Soviet Buran space shuttle back from its landing site to the Baikonur spaceport in Kazakhstan. After the end of the space program, Antonov Airlines converted the An-225 into a cargo plane. The next order: the transport of twelve electrical transformers from Chile across the Andes to Bolivia with twelve flights in just four weeks.

New satellite images of Hostomel shows that the roof in front of the hangar is heavily damaged, but that the tail of the 225 is still intact. I am going to assume that the rest of the plane is heavily damaged, but by the looks of it it has not (yet) been burned to the ground as previously claimed. So who knows... Maybe there is still a chance it can be repaired despite that being completely uneconomical

@@longnamedude3947 The Boeing 747-SP did it YEARS before this one did...and the 747 is quite a bit smaller while the U.S. Space Shuttle was BIGGER than the Soviets' Buran Space Shuttle. The Buran did not have its own main rocket engines, either, whereas the U.S. Shuttle has 3 main rocket engines. Now, don't get me wrong, I am DEFINITELY NOT knocking this amazing machine!! But, credit where it's due!! The 747 is smaller than this and it hauled a bigger space shuttle on its back than this did.

Cuando vino a chile tuve la suerte de poder ir a verlo en vivo y en directo con amigos, pasó por arriba de nuestras cabezas y fue impresionante. Una lastima que por un conflicto mueran estas obras maestras de la ingeniería.

My friend says this plane usually lands at Bangor, ME airport to refuel. And once it landed at Portsmouth NH Pease airport, which has the longest runway in the States, as far as I know.
