Dead Flowers - Alternate Version - Rolling Stones Cover 1971 | A Keith Richards' Masterpiece

  • The alternate version of the Rolling Stone's Dead Flowers recorded in 1971 is a great example of how Keith Richards crafted this masterpiece. As the song's main composer his ceaseless crafting of country, rock and blues styles eventually generated the much loved album version.
However, before the band reached their avowed goal of blending their influences to perfection, Mick Taylor had lots of room to pull off his custom licks in this bluesier version.

"Take me down little Susie, take me down" Dead Flowers, alternate version. A Rolling Stones cover from 1971. A Keith Richards' Masterpiece released on the Sticky Fingers deluxe releases.
The man loves his heroes: Gram Parsons, the Everly Bros., James Burton on Susie Q etc. 100 Jagger vocal takes later and we had a gem. Mick T's not bad on this either!

The Stones fugue, counterpoint guitar is truly an accomplishment. They are in tune with each other fully to make the other members sound good, unlike those hammy musicians that are all about themselves.

With Taylor it was a clear who was playing every licks. Ronnie played like Mick when he initially toured with the band. 15 years later the band really grew and improved as a live band. Keith and Ronnie developed a telepathy and the counter point that sounded more like the recordings whenKeith all the guitars Beggars Banquet and Let it Bleed. When the Taylor years are referred to as the band best years they are actually referring to the Jimmy Miller years. Taylor didn’t play on JJ Flash or Country Honk Monkey Stree … you get my point. Still 73 European tour set the bar so high nothing has ever topped it. Not The Who or Zeppelin or AcDc. The remix of El Macambo is as good The Rolling Stones have ever sounded. Billy Preston is magic. Ian Stewart ,round manager and original member of the band played in place of the session players on the road. Strong left hand. To your point, a remarkable accomplishment

He was great, I love his work. Kieth has said "I miss him every day", BUT, I just want to respond to a common theme in the Stone's mythology: Gram Parsons DID NOT write, or co-write, "Wild Horses", "Dead Flowers", or any other Stones songs. It has been quite conclusively established that not a note of his playing appears on "Exile", or any other Stones album. In fact, I can reveal what is understood by people who were there at the time: Gram Parsons sole actual contribution to the the Stone's musical canon is the near-mythical A minor suspended 4th in the verse chord progression of "Sister Morphine". That's it. They were great mates, and they played together for days and nights on end, but Gram is not the secret author of any Stones song.

I’ve read quotes from people who were at Nellecote, including the meticulous journal-keeper Bill Wyman, as well as people in the final mixes, Gram didn’t play on nor write anything on Exile. He was great friend and fan of the band, but that’s it. And thanks for posting this incredible take - Mick Taylor is absolutely sensational. He always brought the fury AND finesse.

It’s freakish to see them all at Joshua Tree. Of course there’s no way they could’ve known the significance of that at the time. Apparently Graham acquired his jones at Nellcôte when he was hanging out with them during the recording of Exile. In the end even Keith couldn’t deal with how strung out Graham got.

@@Mirabella76 Everyone hears something different in the Stones . There's no doubt Taylor added to the Stones sound . I was young enough to experience the raw sounds of all bands including the Beatles. It was very competitive as bands progressed, and adding anything technical or personal to complete they added. Rock n roll is a business and the music wasn't simple anymore. I'm one of a few that wanted that back and when Wood joined I was thrilled . When Punk developed I was a few my age that loved it . Strange that I never liked the blues as a kid and really didn't like the Stones, but I did like " Little Red rooster" . I later learned that with the help of Taylor i did like the blues, but unfortunately blues bands finish last and contrary to McCartneys recent statement the Stones couldn't continue as a "blues cover band " and I was very happy that they changed. Change is good 😎
