r/Prorevenge In today's episode, OP works at a company with an incredibly lazy IT manager. This guy is so lazy that he gives every single person working at that company the exact same login password. Any worker there could literally log in to the CEO's email. OP points this fact out to the executive team, and the IT manager flips out at OP and threatens to get him fired. SOMEBODY is definitely getting fired today, but it's not going to be OP!

Exactly. Having the same password for everyone is a major security problem. Even in my high school and college, I was told by my teachers to make a unique password. Even my dad who used to work in an office had to have a unique password and change it every year to protect vital data. He was an engineer who did digital work.
Next time post that flaw on Facebook or Craigslist
Here's the thing, they probably did get hit but with how lazy the CTO is he probably implemented no form of IDS (Intrusion Detection System) so they had no idea about who was in and out on their system. Unless multiple customers who got hit talk with each other and determine that business with said company was a common denominator, it's pretty much honors system for companies to monitor for, and notify folks they keep information on.
Forget a disgruntled FORMER employee, I'd be more worried about the damage a disgruntled CURRENT employee could do on their way out on another employee's unattended computer.
First story: "the fact that we never had a major security breach is astounding" - that you know of, OP. That you know of. With that level of security, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't have IDS at all.
Exactly what I thought. Its not like a hacker would let everyone in the company know that they just stole sensitive information.
@@Bluboy511 ya, big difference between stealing a clients info and taking it to another company and giving them a better deal, do it once in a while and ppl will not notice especially if the client doesnt care how u found them only about the deal. old co-worker or hacker doesnt matter and this being the best case scenario for all parties. altering files and info or stealing would b more noticeable. could also alter a clients contact info just after theyve finished a job and mayb havent asked for 1 in a while or right after get their attention for a deal or w/e, contact with the company for that client fades but u cant check with them if theyd like to do anything together again. this all being easily done and would almost nvr be found out. also this is just being common sense on my part, i have very little idea of what im talking about company wise, just enough to make sense and point out exactly y this was so stupid. lol
Aside from the fact that VPNs are a thing, knowing which disgruntled ex-employee did it because of IP addresses is a terrible excuse.. since you'd be dealing with the issue AFTER THE FACT. What an insanely incompetent CTO.
Yeah, someone could easily wreck the system with enough intent, but "we would know who did it, so that's fine!"

The fact that this CTO decided to give everyone the same password, and think it's a good idea, proves how incompetent he is: astounding.

BTW, impersonating an employee is illegal, so that would have been a very bad idea to login the CTO account to send an email, as suggested ^^

That first story is the real life equivalent of Homer Simpsons Job as a safety inspector. The CTO has no idea what he's doing and gets paid for sitting around, doing nothing. And yet despite his incompetence nothing bad happens to the company.

I think with Homer the number of accidents go went down by exactly the number of accidents that would have been caused if he were working the floor.. Kinda like me in my warehouse job. I was known for having a lot of accidents but eventually I became a TL and later manager and the General Manager said there were fewer accidents with me on charge. Someone joked it was because I was driving less - it was funny because it was true!

Story 1: Every computer having the EXACT SAME PASSWORD is a Zetta-No-No. Even a *five year old* wouldn't do that.
Well that's what my company did when I started as a apprentice there. Most employees had a password like "CEOSurname1". Only HR and department chiefs had different ones. I didn't had a assigned working space and sometimes I logged in as one of my colleagues. Happened more than once or twice. Well soon the company went bankrupt and was taken over by a competitor. Data protection was the first thing that changed for everyone. I stayed with the company and now passwords have to be changed regularly too.
My technological ignorant mother wouldn't do it.
Heck, my almost technological illiterate grandpa didn't do it.
My guinea pigs were smarter than this! (Seriously, one squeezed her fat self through a hole to reach the good stuff meant for the thinner, sickly one. When we placed a weight behind it, so the smaller one would fit, but she didn't... One look from far away and no tries. Kept the other one alive for a year longer.)

The first story is hilarious but I’m quite frankly amazed on how they didn’t get hacked before since they just had that 1 password and it’d be easy for someone to get into if ease-dropping.
Yeah, especially if someone had gotten sufficiently disgruntled and infuriated from that dumbass of a CTO before deciding to get back at him.

For the first story, my company is absolutely paranoid about cyber security and this would deny coverage of a security breach and cyber insurnce. The CTO was an idiot
I love listening to rslash a lot because reddit is hard to read, especially for me. Im heavily dyslexic and just really dont have the energy for reading, my brain doesn't ever want to work right and sometimes i miss information or i just dont get what happened in the story. But, with rslash reading, the way he puts emotion into reading things and does different voices. It helps a lot! Im able to understand the context and not be so confused all the time! I'm able to get a good image in my head and enjoy reading. So thank you rslash, you help a lot

For what it's worth, sometimes you can't read. I listen to you while writing code (unless the code block is so intricate words distract, then I listen to classical music). I guarantee there's a truck driver or Uber driver out there listening to your playlists while driving. It's not just laziness.
It's also great to have someone tell you entertaining stories when you're doing house or yard work. :D
This is where a pair of Bluetooth headphones/earbuds really comes in useful!

That first story reminded me of a college where the student passwords are that students date of birth, and students were not allowed to change their password
So you would only need to look at a students ID card (which students are required to have on a lanyard) to get not only their username, but also their password
Mine uses student ID number as the username. They give us a generic password using our names to get us in but we're supposed to change it at earliest convenience.
I love how the CTO wants OP fired for hacking the system. Technically it's not hacking if you have the log in and password. To quote my brother:

The fact that the CEO saw the flaw and agreed with OP shows he isn't completely stupid.
We always say that you shouldn't mess with the IT guy, but an exception can be made when they set the company they work for up for a massive privacy breach.

The CTO is an insult to tech support. Any tech worth their salt would have solved the issue before it was spotted.
That first story feels so familiar to me. One place I worked once did make us change our passwords every so often, but flat out encouraged us to make them ‘Password1’ ‘Password2’ etc every time they changed ‘so that if we were away someone else could log in to our station if needed’. I politely refused and explained how that was a security flaw, and that they should be able to use their own login at a different workstation. No one listened or cared. 🤷♀️

Many years ago I worked for the second largest ISP in New Zealand at the time. We all had separate passwords to log in to the system, but we also had a system password that every employee had to use. This password was changed regularly, usually when someone left. This is a shit company to work for so people left all the time. It happened so often we couldn't keep up with the changes. In the end people just wrote it down and used a sticky note to attach it to their desks.
One day we discover someone on the cleaning crew had been using this access to sniff the traffic and interfere with the business transactions of a couple of large corporations. For this reason, and many, many others, the ISP no longer exists. Second worst job I've ever had.
My school had the exact same security measure as the first story's--we all used our school email and we all had the same password. It only really affected me, as a group of kids logged into my account and stole answers from me on homework. It only was brought to me when someone was stupid enough to say it in one of their classes, and since rumors spread like wildfire in my small school, I caught wind. I immediately changed my password upon hearing about it.

That first story could easily be my company. Technically the passwords are different, but they follow a very simple and easy pattern with only one digit changing between them. It's WILD.

I enjoy listening to Reddit stories people read online because it's kind of like listening to a radio show except there's only a one person doing all the voices. Reading the Reddit stories for some people is like all one big blur if they don't have a mindset to separate the people into characters.
I listen to Rslash when im at work or doing chores and cant be reading! Love browsing reddit, sometimes i have read the stories before i hear them here, but the currated stories and ability to listen while being productive are a great reason to tune in.
Your content is not just helpfull for those that don't want to read but really helpful for those who struggle to/can't read. Take it from someone thats dyslexic (yes that is autosaved on my phones keyboard) that your channel is a blessing because I can't read redit for 10 minutes without becoming confused with the context or missing half the story and having to restart again! Thank you for reading these post for me, it helps me so much and gives me access to something I usually wouldn't be able to use.

One reason I like channels like yours is because Reddit isn’t compatible with Text to Speech on my iPhone. To listen to a Reddit story, I have to click on their “Copy” feature, open Notes, paste it in a note, then highlight the text. Only THEN do I have the ability to use Text to Speech. It is so annoying that I mainly use this method to read very long stories.
I am close to 70, and my eyesight just isn’t as good as it was when I was a sapling of 20. So, for people with vision problems, people like you are very valuable. I also love how when you are amused, you start laughing while you read.

One of my first jobs when I started IT contracting was at a small pharmaceutical company.
The mandated that all passwords be written down in a book for future reference.
I had EVERYONES password.
It was one of the first things I changed.
I can’t believe R/slash said we aren’t readers!! I am reading two books right as we speak have 3 mangas on lay away at the library!! I love reading when I can sit and chill and focus! I love listening to R/slash as I drive to my shitty job looking for an up in my day!!

The secret notes post reminds me of the infamous Van Halen rider. Van Halen put on their tour rider that they wanted M&Ms, backstage, but that there were to be absolutely no brown ones. This ridiculous requirement was to ensure that the rider had been read and to verify how diligent the concert promoters were because the band had a lot of technical requirements for their setups. It helped to uncover multiple incidents of unsafe setups.
I have a suspicion that the CTO wanted them specifically that way. Because if he got to the same level of authority as the CEO and the CEO pissed him off or fired him, he could log into EVERYTHING and either blackmail the company or erase everything without a trace.

Yes, passwords are a huge deal, especially in this day and age. Where I work we actually had to change our reset policy. Phishers have been hitting harder and harder lately, almost biweekly for my organization. While most users are getting hardened from the constant attempts, a few here and there always fall for it. So when someone gets phished, our old way was to reset it back to their DOB. So the phishers started including DOB fields on their phishing forms, and their bots would automatically guess their DOB if it suddenly lost access to their account. So we had to come up with other methods to determine what to reset users' passwords to when they forget.
My main Google account got hacked. Somehow they managed to work out my 19 (yes, NINETEEN) character password. 😳

You're right about people not wanting to read stuff! I listen to audible books and reddit readers like yourself because I want to read but not while I'm driving, walking, and doing menial tasks. The first story is absolute crazy. Even schools in the UK require students to have different passwords, change them every so often and for them to be over 8 characters long. The school can’t even know your password.

i'm one of the rare people that loves reading (i read at least an hour a day, most days), but i don't have time to read the entirety of reddit. so i let rslash find good stories to read, and let him read to me while i have my morning caffeine and breakfast.

I know channels like this, actually not like this one, but those with the robot voices or steal the stories are frowned upon, but this channel is great for getting a good deal of those stories while occupying my hands with things like chores or chasing my toddler around.

Your channel isn't just for people who are lazy and don't like to read. While those things definitely also apply to me, I do struggle reading quite a bit. I read at about 50% speed of an average person and I'm floating somewhere in the grey area between normal and dyslexic. So this channel is an absolute luxury for me! It would have been easy for any hacker to pretend they’re the CTO and email everyone saying “This is my two weeks notice. I’m moving to Mars in a month.” or tell OP “Hey, OP! How about a raise? I want to pay you $10,000 per hour!”
To be fair @rSlash, it isn't so much that I personally don't like to read (I do), it's that you are an EXCELLENT narrator, and your various voices elevate a story.
When I read the story, it's funny, when I hear you reading it in your "Bad Boss" or "Karen" voices, it's hilarious.
Lol reminds me of when I was in the Marine Corps. My shop had a 'training NCO'. Basically an E4 who would write up an outline every week for daily PT and MOS related training activities. One guy started writing in obviously wrong uniforms for different activities, like dress blues for 0600 PT, because he suspected that leadership never actually read them. He never got called on it.

In my case, it’s not so much that I don’t like to read, it’s that I like having something to listen to and occasionally glance at in the background while doing other things. Multitasking is what I try to make my norm, so these fit super well, even if I’m just goofing off with this playing.

The fact that you can identify the IP address if a former employee gains access to private customer info means nothing if they use that info to steal the identity, or post it online just to be a jerk.
That customer has a huge mess to sort out - plus the company is legally liable - and the fact that you’ve identified the former employee’s IP address (assuming they didn’t just go to an Internet cafe) is meaningless to that person or people.
Re 15-min time tracker - I did this voluntarily as a 10-min tracker. It was eye-opening - both in terms of how much work I got done and how much time was wasted by *other people*. Leveraged that record into working from home.
