It all started where the road ended

  • Overgrown abandoned road halfway up a NH mountain metal detecting.
I took the big hike today to do some exploring and relic hunting at a spot I was at years ago. When we were here last we stopped right where the rock walls on both sides of the colonial road ended. So I took my Fisher F19 and did some investigating and hoping to find a cellar hole.. Along the way I found oxen shoes of course and then I dug an ox nob like no other. It had been cut on one side and because of its age it was done hundreds of years ago. Then even more strange I dug up a thimble with a chunk of lead smashed into it ! whoa ! Reading the landscape history I found a beautiful pasture on the top of a hill that I am convinced hides an old cabin site. Clean improved land, stacked rocks, rock walls and old trees. I made my way all over the place reading the land and digging up stuff along the way.

The thimble has grooves from a gun barrel on it, jacketed bullet that looks remarkably like a thimble.

At least it wasn't a thimble with a chunk of finger in it.

@Not Thursday that was a copper jacket for a old style bullet.. you can see the rifle marks and the vertical crimp marks in the ring around the base that held the copper jacketed lead core bullet to the copper shell. but still cool to find like that.

The "thimble" is a modern copper jacketed lead bullet.

Are you sure the thimble isn't a bullet? I see a smashed bullet with rifling and casing marks. Thimble would have the dot pits all around it??? Just my thought!

    Looked it up
Treasure Net: Ox knobs are devices that are slipped over the ends of cows' horns that are blunt on the end, or have a rounded bulb on the end. There are screw holes in them that allow a couple of screws to hold them in place. They are used to keep the horns from goring a person.... or other cattle, I guess. Here's a pic of one I found on another forum

Not a Thimble . Fired pistol projectile that has partially shed the core.

Did the colonists start building stone walls right off? Or did it happen later when sheep were brought in in numbers? What years were they built? Give us more history as you no doubt have studied and know.

Did you just reference the video where Dame originally said "Sometimes you gotta do the things that must be done"? Because I'm going back watching old videos and, literally, watched that episode last night. 🤣
