    The incident Dave is referring to was in 1983 when the Soviet detection system warned that the US had launched a missle. Petrov trusted his gut and saved the world. From WW3 at the least.

      There also another incident that happened on a Russian submarine, the sub had lost contact with the USSR and protocol was something like the top 3 ranking officers have to vote wether to launch or not launch nukes and 2/3 voted to launch them and the one that didn’t wasn’t even supposed to be on that submarine but some series of events put him there as being the next highest ranking officer on board

      The incident in 1983 you are referring to was during a large CP exercise that was tightly scripted and conducted over encrypted radios across Western Europe. At that time the Soviet Union had built a dead hand device to trigger automatic launches on detection of a western launch. The engineers and the Soviet government decided keeping a man in the loop was a good idea. There was a lot of turmoil and fear on the Soviet side with increased military exercises in the Pacific, normal exercises that were larger than ever, the invasion of Grenada (and the subsequent encrypted phone calls between Washington and London that were not to pleasant over it), the Beruit bombing, and the accidental shoot down of a civilian airliner over Soviet territory that was believed to be a spy plane all contributed to events that were to unfold. Basically a high altitude cloud reflected the sunlight into the sensors of a spy satellite triggering the dead hand device. Lt Col Petrov was on watch and did not believe the system, and didn’t believe the Americans wanted to launch the end of world because he didn’t either. After several minutes, and multiple launch warnings, it was determined to not be real. For standing his ground and basically saving the world, the world’s hero was kicked out of the Soviet military. The book Dead Hand covers this event in the first terrifying chapter, and looking up anything on CZcams about the Exercise Able Archer will take you to some lengthy documentaries about this incident.

  • @oarabiletshwagong1736
    @oarabiletshwagong1736 Před 11 měsíci +4

    There are actually two instances where Soviet soldiers saved the world:
    1. Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov (Russian: Станисла́в Евгра́фович Петро́в) was a lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Forces who prevented a nuclear war in the 1983 Soviet nuclear false alarm incident. On 26 September 1983, three weeks after the Soviet military had shot down Korean Air Lines Flight 007, Petrov was the duty officer at the command center for the Oko nuclear early-warning system when the system reported that a missile had been launched from the United States, followed by up to five more. Petrov judged the reports to be a false alarm.
    2. Vasily Aleksandrovich Arkhipov (Russian: Василий Александрович Архипов) was a Soviet Naval officer who is known for preventing a Soviet nuclear torpedo launch during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Such an attack likely would have caused a major global thermonuclear response, destroying large parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
    The Captain and political officer had thought that nuclear war had began after they lost contact with Moscow and the US navy was dropping depth charges on the sub, thus the captain and political officer decided to use their nuclear torpedoes against the US navy, but Vasily as the flotilla commodore as well as executive officer of the diesel powered submarine B-59, Arkhipov refused to authorize the use of them as all three men needed to agree to use the torpedoes.
    Its sad that no one talks about these two men, if they were American or British soldiers I am sure that we would have had a movie, miniseries or documentary about them.

    I'm with Dave, I don't see it ever happening. It's a hot take, but I think the lives potentially saved by the mere existence of nuclear weapons, both from deterring potential conflict and from the cancer treatment research we gained from the WW2 attacks will always vastly outnumber the related deaths from them. Effectively, nuclear weapons are the most defensive and peace-enforcing weapon ever made, not offensive.

    @Kenneth_James Před 11 měsíci +2

    Vasily Aleksandrovich Arkhipov eventually persuaded Savitsky to surface and await orders from Moscow. His persuasion effectively averted a nuclear war which likely would have ensued if the nuclear weapon had been fired.
    October 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a group of 11 United States Navy destroyers and the aircraft carrier USS Randolph located the diesel-powered, nuclear-armed Foxtrot-class submarine B-59 near Cuba. (The B-59 was one of four Foxtrot submarines sent by the USSR to the area around Cuba.) Despite being in international waters, the United States Navy started dropping signaling depth charges, which were intended to force the submarine to come to the surface for identification.
    By then, there had been no contact from Moscow for a number of days. Those on board did not know whether war had broken out or not. The captain of the submarine, Valentin Grigoryevich Savitsky, decided that a war might already have started and wanted to launch a nuclear torpedo. Authorization of all three officers on board the B-59 were needed instead; this was due to Arkhipov's position as Commodore of the flotilla. The three men were captain Savitsky, political officer Ivan Semyonovich Maslennikov, and executive officer Arkhipov. An argument broke out between the three of them, with only Arkhipov against the launch. Arkhipov eventually persuaded Savitsky to surface and await orders from Moscow. His persuasion effectively averted a nuclear war which likely would have ensued if the nuclear weapon had been fired.

    No one survives an all out nuclear war. No need to speculate.

    I'm surprised that this info is out there for anyone. I'm sure that the military has a lot of other things that we don't know about.

    Nobody would win. It would most likely be on the scale of the "The Great War" from the Fallout game franchise.

    Usually when I hear people from other countries discussing American politics it’s way off but you guys seem to be more level headed and better informed than most Americans from either “side”. Thanks for that, there’s no way I could discuss any other country’s politics let alone Britain, y’all have too many parties😂

    Dave got the story almost all the way correct, my memory is they were aboard a nuclear sub, got the order to fire & if I remember correctly all 3 senior command ppl onboard have to give the go ahead to launch 2 gave the ok & one refused so they couldn’t launch

    • @mag1631
      @mag1631 Před 11 měsíci

      this is also what i remember.Also, here was a russian at a different time I thinkthat also refused to give the order. It's very scary how close we came...

      And the guy who rejected the launch wasn't a regular member of the crew. He happened to be there for a visit and actually had the authority to stop it.

    #3 acting like we could in any way shape or form win let alone survive is utter bullshit.

    It's not like there's 15 mins to make a sudden, heat-of-the-moment decision. There's already protocol in place for every scenario they can think of. Can you imagine Biden trying make a decision?

    Dave thinks Ukraine should just white flag it for peace and give up a fifth of their rightful land? What the hell, let that happen to UK and you just settle for that.
