Oversimplified is fun, and I agree he presents history in an entertaining way, but he definitely does not give the full story. As his name admits, he not only simplifies things, but OVER simplifies them...and that means he leaves out many many important details.
Take Sputnik and the missile gap...Sputnik was not a big surprise to the West, and everyone did not freak out immediately...that came when articles describing Soviet space platforms armed with nukes to drop on our heads and other fantasies began appearing in newspapers. Turns out opportunistic politicians and their minions in the press were spreading false tales of a missile gap, and the Air Force was echoing these dark predictions to make their case for more more more money for bombs and bombers and missiles. This is the very epitome of the military industrial complex he later warned of.
In reality, the USSR had announced it intended to orbit a satellite by a certain date, and almost nobody believed that it would be a big deal if the USSR got Sputinik up first. Ike actually preferred that, since the Soviets putting up a satellite first would establish the Freedom of Space, and ensure that the USSR could not later object when the US put up its early photographic recon satellites, which were then in the planning stage. If the US had wanted to orbit a satellite before the USSR, there was definitely a good chance that they would have succeeded...just look at the launches of the Jupiter C, which had reached altitudes greater than 600 miles back in September 1956.
So, yeah...Oversimplified left out a few important things. 🖖✌
