Something funny that happened is that when the wall was open, people still got arrested because to tried to climb over the wall to the other side, even though there was a legal way to cross.
There's a famous video of the Germans camping in the garden of the embassy, and when they receive info that they can travel to western germany the roaring celebration completely drowns out the speech.

Interesting video. That was a close call with the guy who stopped it. Another interesting fact is that the more freedom Gorbachov gave the people, the more things were breaking apart and it led to dissolution. It was kept together only by an iron hand. With 15 republics and many satellite states, it must of been pretty hard to keep it from falling apart.
I mean if big empires of the past tell us anything, sure, build a big nation. Keeping it stable and making sure the majority of people happy is another thing.
