This is a touchy subject. They do wreak havoc. They do live shorter lifespans (3 years for feral not indoor/outdoor). For us, it's a little personal. We adopted a rescue in Atlanta who had been found outside, pregnant, and sick. As it turns out, cats can test negative for heartworm for 6 months after infection, there is still no treatment. We did everything they recommend for trying to help a cat survive heartworm but if a heartworm dies in the wrong organ (they're not endemic to cats and so they don't necessarily end up in the heart), they can cause problems. Our poor girl died of a massive seizure brought on by a heartworm dying in the wrong place. It was horrific. My cats stay inside.

I came across a feral colony and started TNR so it wouldn't get bigger. I decided for myself that this was going to be what I give back because people I have helped suck (sorry... not sorry). We choose to have our cats as indoor cats and let them out under supervision every now and then. But we have neighborhood cats that belong to neighbors that roam all the yards. My husband and I enjoy spotting one of them in our backyard. We keep each other posted when we spot one.
We adopted a cat from our local animal shelter a couple years ago, she was 3 years old at the time. Her name is Hannah. She used to live with an old lady, and this lady had a LOT of cats. She knew that she was just getting older, so she had to give up the younger ones. I do applaud her decision, it was very responsible. Anyways, Hannah had never really been outside before. Imagine not ever knowing there was the huge world for 3 whole years. We have one other cat, his name is Jake. He showed up at our waiting house, as we were building a forever home for us to live in at the time. Keep in mind, the house we were in at the time and the house we’re building was in a very rural area. We suspect Jake was a drop off, and he looked to be around 1 year old. We fed him, he was an outside cat. Eventually, he would come inside sometimes. He would always come back to our house. (Obviously he did, there was food) When we moved into our newly built house, we brought Jake with us. Now he could be inside or outside whenever he wanted. Jake LOVES to be outside. He loves to play and catch birds and lay in the sun. He also loves to roam around our property. Sometimes he gets sprayed by skunks. When he comes inside, he likes to lay on his back and get belly rubs. That is pretty unusual for a cat. We make sure to take him to the vet every so often and ‘flea & tick’ him so he doesn’t get any bites. He is very healthy and is currently 10 years old. Anyways, back to Hannah. When we first brought Hannah home, she was just like any cat. She was scared and hid a lot. But she gradually opened up and trusted us more. We started to let her outside a little bit at a time, to help her get used to being outside. Eventually, we were able to let her be outside for multiple hours. We kind of have a schedule. She goes outside in the morning, then comes back inside around lunch and takes an afternoon nap. Hannah loves being outside. She loves to run around and hunt birds and it is beautiful to see. She is also perfectly healthy. If you are willing to do it, I *highly* recommend to let your cat(s) outside. It is amazing to watch them in their natural environment. Cats are not a threat to you unless you MAKE them a threat to you. Also, we have plenty of birds. It’s gonna be OK if a cat kills a few. So many people are scared of cats for no reason (Some people do have a reason. That is understandable.) Just acknowledge that cats are just like any other animal. They have natural instincts and behaviors.
The worst part of it is when someone posts about their lost cat, people flood in to say "you should keep your cat indoors" "dont you know its unsafe for a cat to go outside" etc. etc. That is an inappropriate time to inform someone. Especially when its a post about an indoor only kitty. They're obviously trying to find their cat and get them back inside. The kind of pain from a critter going missing is indescribable.
I can't think of their ages right now but my cats are indoor - outdoor and few of them are old or close to that age. I do agree there are lots of cons to keeping an outdoor or indoor - outdoor cat however it is not common in my country to keep indoor cats, most are indoor - outdoor and my living situation right now is NOT ideal to keep a cat indoor. Yes you could say well we shouldn't have gotten cats in the first place, the first 2 cats I got were a birthday present so from then on I started doing more research about cats and learned along the way, there's no way I would have known the things I know now because I was not planning to get a cat. My parents say they got the cats to help out with the rat situation (it worked) but they were my present as well. My father didn't the money in time and that one female cat got pregnant and each time we have to spay a female cat it's either not done on time or we can only get 2 spayed at a time cuz it's what we could save up for and then the others would get pregnant. These are all rookie mistakes that could have been avoided if anyone of us had done at least some basic research before getting the cats but I was unaware that they were gonna get cats and my parents are from a older generation ofcourse they're *not* gonna do their research before getting a pet. My point is, yes people can do better and research the options for their pet if they have one and especially before getting a pet, but not everyone is in a position where they can get to do that research. As long as they are learning along the way and making the best decisions they can afford for their cat. As for the whole bird thing. No matter how much animals they catch, there's always more for them to catch. No cat ever ran out of mice or birds or lizards, etc to catch. Humans made certain bird species extinct from hunting them and blamed it on cats. We do rescue animals our cats catch if they're alive and have a chance but there's always more for them to catch and not all of our cats hunt often even tho they're female. One more thing I wanna mention. ALL my cats are spayed now, BUT the *neighbour's* female cats came to us often for food, they got pregnant, had their kittens in our home and now we're responsible for them when they're not our cats. On the outside it seems like we are seriously irresponsible owners but truth is they're not even our cats so how could we have saved money to get them spayed when we didn't predict the future that the neighbour was gonna get cats, not get them spayed, and his female cats would move in with us!
My guy, cats explicitly are linked to 63 extinctions in the US alone, and this is a more recent study. They are a dangerous invasive species. I do really sympathize with your plight, but you can always bring cats to a humane society for sheltering, and there are low cost spay/neuter clinics specifically for low income owners, costing even less (nothing) if you plan on surrendering them. I understand you and your family couldn't bear to abandon them, but you have chosen that burden - the cats did not. It is your responsibility to make sure they are in places where they'd be taken care of, not placed in risk. What I'm seeing is a lot of 'its not my fault', rather than asking for help or saying how you're changing things.
🤣🤣🤣🤣i love this its so accurate. I have a neighbor that has at least 12 cats probably more that is causing the problem of over population of animals in this world. She doesn't have any of them fixed and just lets them roam around then they get pregnant and here comes more and more litter's. And we live in an apartment!!!!! I actually just found two kittens by our dumpster Wednesday my manager said she found 3 so a total of 5 for this litter and not sure who the mom is but i am pretty sure the neighbors went and dumped them because they already have too many. Someone dumped them because there around 4-6 weeks old and they were not out there before. So now I'm try to find a rescue because they are to young to adopt. And i also have my cat thats 8 and my doggy plus two kids so my hands are already full. My cat is and indoor cat i would never let my baby just roam around like that because anything could happen to her. Nope indoors only sorry. Unless shes in my arms to go outside to get a little air or has her harness and leash on which she hates lol and hides as soon as she sees it. But i still leave the sttray cats and all the other cats outside alone there not bothering me. I just shew them off my porch when i need to to make sure there nit peeing all over. But people leave the cats alone if there nit bothering you its not there fault its the owners faults.
Honestly, facts. If the feral problem is bad in your area, get to fundraising. I was blessed to get a kitty spayed for free because of a local program that did free or low cost spays/neuters for outdoor/feral cats. TNR is trap neuter release. Ask your local shelters for more info as they are way more informed than me. Every one always saying how the hood used to be better…this is a tale as old as time and just because you get scared by change doesn’t mean we all do lol
😂😂😂 omg do you live in my neighborhood? Me and the lady across the street have been helping the strays for the last few yrs. To the point we have cat houses and make sure they’re fed everyday. She has taken in 3 and is trying to catch the others to get them fixed. My bf and I are trying to do the same. Most are grateful because they have now mostly migrated to jst our homes. There will always be cats outside. Sad part is many end up out there because people move and abandon them.
I have concerns Ms Chang. I see that in this video, you seem to think that you can access Facebook via blue plastic… I think you may need a holiday 😂😂❤❤
My indoor outdoor male neutered with breakaway collars lived to be 16 years old. Everyone knew who they belonged to and gave them treats and they rarely lrft our yard. The one who arent taught young dont know how to take care of themselves or not pottie in yards etc. it is just a cat.
There's usually heaps of missing cat flyers around my neighborhood and online posts. There's also a non-zero number of coyotes and fox around here too. With that math, I really wonder why anyone here lets their cats roam about as indoor/ outdoor. (minus accidental escapes)
I used to live in a neighbourhood with a cat mafia. They were very interesting to watch and listen to at night. You could tell who the big bosses were and who was just sneaking around.
Omg OK as an fb thread, that's a little ridiculous. However, I was attacked by a stray cat 2 years ago after my ex let him in our home after my pleading to not do so! That's not the ONLY reason we broke up, but I'll say he was more concerned about the cat than my bloodied head & face. It was very traumatic! I had to rip it off of my head it's claws we're digging into my scalp. It missed my eye by a centimeter! Just don't touch them!!!!!😼
Im the neighbor who's garden is being used as a personal litterbox by the neighborhood cats and strays. Nothing like the smell of baked cat feces during 100°F summer temps. And lately, they have been using the raised flower boxes around my front door. So, anyone who comes to.visit, or when I come in or out myself...cat pee and poo is the first odor that you smell. Although I'm not arguing this out on any Facebook neighborhood groups, I have been tempted at times. I have tried the diplomatic approach, and discussed the issue with the cat owners, and those feeding all the strays. But, they seem to like they couldn't have cared less. I love animals. I even do volunteer work with an organization that traps cats, gets them spayed/neutered, and releases them afterwards. We have been able to get some of them adopted out. But, there are just so many of them. Our small community has a huge problem with strays.
My cat growing up was an indoor/outdoor cat. He lived to be 17, but I know that isn’t the norm. I can’t speak for all of his activities, but he only brought a dead bird home once and got scolded for it, never did it again. Mice though, he was a menace to mice lol. Most of the cats I’ve met I wouldn’t trust outside for a variety of reasons though, most of said reasons relating to their intelligence 😂
I have her cat, her name is Mini. She orginally my step fathers cat. Mini was forced to spend most of her life outside and in the shed because of my step father's OCD. Mini recentley turned 17. And she still climvmbs over gates to pee and poo in my mother's garden.
If not Facebook, then it's on NextDoor. I'm pretty much on the "inside cat" team, tho. My BFF had 3 outside cats and we both saw one get picked off by an owl one night. It was pretty traumatizing.
My cat is an indoor/outdoor cat. It gets so hot in my house my cat hates it. He will whine and cry until he can go outside. Yes he is fixed so no babies from him. And yes he is older then 3 years.
Every couple weeks for the past year or so, I have found a dead cat on a walk in my neighborhood because of the prevalence of feline leukemia. It has spread through our town like wildfire and is killing cats left and right. Op told ZERO LIES. People need to be educated about mistreating their animals. If that's being nosy or judgey, fine.
I live in a neighborhood that has many stray cats as well as many pet cats and dogs who live outside. Everyone loves all the animals and even if some don't no one bothers other people about it. People need to mind their business.
In the uk it's actually considered odd and kind of cruel to keep a cat indoors. Like keeping animals in too small of an enclosure, or not taking your dog for walks. Also, not sure why people are saying indoor/outdoor. I would have thought if a cat doesnt go indoors, it's not a pet, it's a stray you just happen to feed. Do people really keep their cats entire OUTdoors??
my indoor outdoor cat got killed by a coyote :( i always had indoor outdoor cats but not anymore. a piece of my heart is still gone. that’s why they should stay inside ❤
This is crazy to me. I don’t understand people that are shitty to their neighbors. Shitting where you eat, imo. My cats are inside/outside cats. He comes and goes as he pleases. They’re both 15 now. Cats are predators; They’re fine outside. My childhood cats lived to be 9 & 13. As long as you don’t live on a busy street, I don’t see the problem. All of my neighbors look out for each other for the most part and regards everyone’s animals warmly. Even have had two generations of neighborhood kids coming to the door to ask if the cat could come outside. No joke. And I live in a SF suburb in CA in a regular blue collar kinda neighborhood.
I have never objected to anything you have ever posted here have supported you, I have stood by you in the most awful circumstances that you’ve had to deal with. Are not wild creatures and cats should not be let outside. There are so many dangers and diseases that they can come in contact with. Ask Vet they will tell you don’t let your domesticated cats go outdoors.
i would not recommend leaving cats outside just cuz theyre horrible for local fauna. my entire family is allergic to cats so we do have some outside, and the amount of dead mice/birds/snakes we find is insane. i also had an outside cat that lived to 22, but another didnt even make it a year. so yeah, theyre menaces and some will cause you grief while others will last a long time. just no matter what give them enrichment, i know someone whose cat stays in one room all the time and only has like 5 toys, feel so bad for the kitty
Moved with our crazy, biting, angry, trapped indoor cat from a small attic in London to the suburbs in Northern Norway where he's free to come and go as he pleases. He completely changed personality and is now the loveliest cat ever. I think indoor cats are often under stimulated and it leads to boredom which leads to aggression etc. All respect to the people who manage to give indoor cats the life they deserve though.
My cats like to be outside and inside. I'm not going to deny them of going outside in my fenced-in yard out back and letting them roam around like cats should do. It's part of them to be out and exploring. My cat's also like to sit in your lap inside and get scratches for hours. This is what bothers me with next door. I joined a cat Facebook group to see how I could get the neighbor cats to get along with my cats because the neighbor cats are always outside and on my porch because their owners don't ever let them inside and they starve for affection and food and water. Anyways, I asked what I could do to get them to get along and everyone attacked me and said my cats should not be outside and I need to go speak to the neighbors as to why they leave their cats outside everyday. I just left the group because I ain't got time for that.
I made the mistake of perusing my local FB page. When did road skid marks become something everyone needed facts about? As I used to say to my 3rd graders MYOB (mind your own business). Who has time?
Cats have a significant impact on the fast-declining native wildlife and habitats. It's worth considering if you have any questions! Every small contribution matters to our environment.
Lol we need local free spay and neuter clinics. Ours back home gave you live animal traps. You catch local farel or stray cats they fix em and give em shots then you release them where they were and you both prevent illness spreading and they aren't reproducing. My cats have all been indoor out door cats. My oldest fur baby was 24.. if you have a problem talk to the owners. Facebook neighborhood chats are ridiculously judgmental Karen and Kevin free for alls. Ots insane.
I get it. This is about the drama, but keeping house cats in the house is an important issue. Stopping there. I have things to do today, and if I don't stop, this could be a novel of a comment. Please keep your cats inside, if you love them.
I'm the ahole that let's their cat out 😜 to my defense the little turd used all the little bit of energy she had to walk through the doggy door as she was close to dying outside from hunger. She was a stray and now I cant keep her in 🤷🏽♀️
My longest lived kitty (19 years) was predominantly outdoors. She could come inside if she wanted but chose outside mostly. Anyway I stay t f off Facebook or anything like that. I can not handle the stress

My nextdoor wishes it was this calm.
Please, read this meme. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂 Did my 9yr old post on fb?!
This is why I don't do facebook. So bad for my mental health
We know exactly which one is the real Ms Chang 😂❤
Nextdoor = same thing
My neighborhood verbatim 🤣
😂😂😂😂 no lies dude
Oh my goodness lol😂😂😂 hey are y'all still going to Europe
My cats are indoor/outdoor. One is 6 years old and one is 2. I'll update this post in 2 years.
Cats keep mice and rats away they cool with me 😂
I used to live in a neighbourhood with a cat mafia.
Just don't touch them!!!!!😼
The NEXT DOOR APP!!! Blew up when i had a bbq and GASP my friends and family are not all white. People tell on themselves online.
I like your hoodie!
lol this is happening everywhere why people do this lmfao
A cat can live up to 20 / 30 years.
And black cats live longer because they cannot get many of the other diseases that other cats get........
Literally nextdoor
Omg!!!! I hate when Karen's post about cats being outside 😂
Drives me nuts!!
We had a problem and ended trapping 52 cats only 2 had owners that claimed them and we did nuet those before we returned
Since we have had wildlife return including this year a baby dear and mom
Ots insane.
How do you feel about mice and rats? Cats hint them, too.
Facebook Neighborhood groups are public menaces.
The next day the same person talks about rats lol. Keep the cats or rats you pick.
I get it. This is about the drama, but keeping house cats in the house is an important issue. Stopping there. I have things to do today, and if I don't stop, this could be a novel of a comment.
Please keep your cats inside, if you love them.
A reason I left META
No seriously keep your cats inside though!
❤❤❤❤
I'm the ahole that let's their cat out 😜 to my defense the little turd used all the little bit of energy she had to walk through the doggy door as she was close to dying outside from hunger. She was a stray and now I cant keep her in 🤷🏽♀️
LMFAO
My longest lived kitty (19 years) was predominantly outdoors. She could come inside if she wanted but chose outside mostly. Anyway I stay t f off Facebook or anything like that. I can not handle the stress
