Christy describing Frances McDormand is making me choke up for some reason.
I'm glad I've seen this in a theater. Gorgeous movie. Very moving in the end.
I reviewed this movie (which I loved) on my channel back in September when I saw it virtually through TIFF. Swankie herself commented on it saying that much of her character's story was derived from her real life, that she has canoed every single state, and that footage of her with the birds was something she shot herself a couple years ago, and Zhao decided to work it into the narrative. I thought that was really cool.
We could tell.
This is my favorite movie of the year. Beautiful film. Incredibly unique.
it is. I agree with most of the reviewers. Its about romanticism and reality. The character of McDormand and her joy and sorrow, and the mood is just so natural. So perfect. I thought the movie was a little too quick for its mood at times. Like so many things happen so quickly but it does travel all the ground so well. This is indeed a power house performance from McDormand but you also have to hand it to the supporting actors who come and play their small parts around her so well. And they are mostly non-actors. I mean you can figure out that they are not professional actors and yet they do such a great job. But you are right. Its a beautiful film. With not a lot movies not releasing this year and for some reason Rachel McAdams not getting the nomination she deserved it probably means McDormand is going to get another shot for Best Actress. I do not want to be critical but I think McDormand's performance was enhanced by her character and the way the movie was shot and presented. And McAdams did a better job of playing a more complicated character who had to go through many different emotions. But Nomadland is probably now ahead for best movie and cinematography.
@@lanedayes7956 Am I detecting disappointment?
So real…so touching, haunting, and memorable. A modern - On The Road - mostly with seniors. The cinematology is stunning.
I like that long tracking scene... as a scene in a film, as the first teaser for a film I was so bored and confused by it. Had the year worked like it was supposed to we would be in the height of the Chloe Zhao hype machine! Eternals was early November then this just in time for the Oscar race!? Would have been massive hype behind her critically and financially! She is one to watch in the next few years! 👍🏾❤️
She is not drifting from place to place she is traveling and exploring the country. She is not homeless she is houseless.
Exactly, unfortunately many people don’t get that.
Thanks for finally getting around to my favorite movie. One correction: the book is not a novel. Fern was invented by Francis and Chloe in order to create a story. I have been a nomad and know several folks in the movie. Circumstances (my mom needs my care at the end of her life) keep me from that life right now, but I cannot wait to return to it. I loved everything about it including the discomfort. This movie captures all the positives of the lifestyle and will help me explain it to my bewildered relatives and friends. Can’t wait for a dvd and digital copy of my own. Meanwhile, I scored a second viewing from TIFF for Wednesday night!!!
Two of my favorite things intersecting! Sam Seder interviewed Jessica Bruder on MR and convinced me to get the book. Now you're reviewing the film for it, which I didn't even know existed. Going to have to watch! And the book was a true story.
Nomadland reminded me of Into The Wild. Both movies are about a nomad scraping together an existence, searching for what truly brings them peace and happiness, making deep connections with people along their journey, but still choosing to go their own way, and while being haunted by their past. Both movies resonated with me, which maybe is a little concerning.
I did this for a year. It's surprisingly freeing shitting in a bucket from the inside of your van while you stare out at the mountains haha. Once you're on the road for a while you sort of become one with the road and land. It's an amazing experience! Bobs videos were one of the things that inspired me to get on the road in the first place. How cool to see him in this movie.
I also have been a nomad with a bucket toilet. (Part of the charm, for sure.) Will be again when I no longer have to look after my mom. Gulp. I’ll take my grief on the road like Fran does.
Yes i will have to see this movie i am subbed to Bob's channel.
Cheers
You could have shit in a bucket at your parents house, since that’s all it takes for you
Haven't said it in a while but love these reviews, and man, this movie is so beautiful. I haven't seen it on the big screen but of all the movies this year, this is the one I'd most want to see in a theater. McDormand doesn't need a third Oscar (can we give her Three Billboards one to Saoirse?) but this stands next to Fargo as one of the great performances of her career. The Directors Branch will be awed by what Zhao pulls off here.
Truly
3 Oscars is too much!! Lol, let's give it to somebody who doesn't have one lol.
I can’t wait to see this film as it depicts the future I see for myself. Note: My 74 year old sister works in an Amazon warehouse and loves it. We all hear the nightmare stories, but Amazon does provide jobs and flexibility for senior workers.
One will always find someone that LOVES something others despise.
There's always someone who hates the Rolls Royce's in life.
There are 2 Amazon facilities near me and I know a lot of people that absolutely love it. You can find horror stories for any employer but the larger it is, the louder those bad ones get. They pay great, are very very flexible in scheduling and the job has gotten so much easier over the years. If I ever need to job search again, I know I can get a great paying job there. How many communities can say that. If you have limitations, they'll find a position that works for you as well.
I fortunately have a large home theater and this is a wonderful cinematic experience. Agreed with everything you said. It made me think of the Sean Penn movie Into The Wild.
Seeing this movie marks my first foray back to an actual movie theater in almost a year. The experience could not have been more satisfying. The sweeping western vistas are kind of muted and looked like paintings, true art. The story is emotional and affecting. Frances McDormand is perfect. Man, did I miss going to the movies.
Just finished watching.
Best movie of the year. By far.
I lived this life part time and had not life happened would still be out there. The freedom and the challenges fed my spirit and hope to someday get back to the road...I carry it in my heart.
Haven't seen it yet but will ASAP.
I'm coming for Frances McDormand, but I'm staying for David Strathairn, who's been off the radar far too long.
Spot on review of a wonderful, memorable film....thanks guys!
a couple of theaters reopened here this week, I went and saw this today, it was fantastic. They deserve all the praise.
LOVE CHLOE ZHAO!! so excited for Eternals
My favorite element of this film it avoids all the cliched conflicts and connections. It’s so refreshing and deeply thoughtful.
Loved the premise, just wish there was more of a central issue you in movie. I felt like it was kinda about nothing. Maybe I’m just not artsy enough.
Looks like Christy's son was wondering if his mom was on a Zoom call to Santa Claus (Alonzo)
I cried at this movie.
I'm a realtor btw.
Love u guys
Stunning film, indeed.
So you can only see the movie on line?
Anyone know?
Hulu.
Finally was able to watch this on Hulu. Beautiful. Loved it. Eye-Opening and I think it will only get better with age.
So glad you caught up with it!
Love Christy standing by her calculations at the end. I give the film an 8.5.
I just saw this and I'm so heartbroken I could not connect to anything. Maybe it's the fact that I live in the desert and I'm so bored with that kind of scenery and the fact that I've been hearing rave reviews for this for over a year. Of course the performances are great but I felt nothing, and it went nowhere. Anyways... Maybe I'll give it a 2nd watch a long time from now.
I was worried this film would be . . . I don't know what. Dour? Heavy? Too familiar? This review convinced me to watch.
i just watched it! i love it so much!!! chloe zhao is my favorite director!!
This wasn't my favorite of 2020, but I won't be mad if it wins every category is nominated for at the Oscars!
Perfection.
Rubber Stamp Rodeo? I’m still LOL!
A lot of the "extras" in the movie have their own youtube channel so they are comfotable in front of a camera.
The first trailer is from the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous in Quartzsite, AZ. You could do a tiny amount of research instead of just dismissively butchering it.
Correction: ALL of us " could do this" "WONT" < key word
What the flick?
I like the rounding talk...keeping it crazy!
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Christy beat Alonso at math?
So the employer who provided the highest pay and the cleanest and safest working environment (Amazon) was the bad guy? But the jobs where she was wiping up vomit and cleaning toilets for less pay was ok. I think Matt has ideological blinders on.
A pretty movie with great acting, but it doesn't quite meet the standards of storytelling. The character and her situation are well established, but it doesn't really go forward much. After a while it's repetitive and overlong. I'm tired of critics fawning over boring cinema. It's bad for independent films.
What the flick! What happened to the old channel? You left me hanging when you disappeared.
They were cancelled due to low views/subscribers. They made this channel independently.
@@VicenteTorresAliasVits I see.
Thanks for letting me know.
I didn’t think I would like this movie but how so wrong I was. Probably my second favorite movie after Minari. Such a different yet beautiful performance by McDormand. People living such a simple yet for them a meaningful life. Wonderful film.
This is very relatable. When my gypsum plant shut down, I was pooping in every bucket I could find. Then one day, it hit me like a lightning bolt: I should open a bucket factory.
Yes, it departs from any REAL political analylsis, I did expect more until I saw that Amazon got off easy......I fear romanticizing everything the book really exposed. Yes its beautiful in America if you can AFFORD to camp, fix your vehicle , have health care !!!!
I really enjoyed this film, but one of the reviewers here pissed me off when he said that this country is "fucked up". Screw him! This country is NOT fucked up. It's the greatest country in the history of the world, and it's a free country (so far) where people like this can live they way they want to. And he's obviously making a good living, the bastard!
That’ll preach!👏👏👏👏👏👏🗽🗽🗽🗽🗽🗽
She i
Always wonder how many of your audiences are film critics themselves, would not be surprised if the racial is high
Nomad is a new term they used to be called rubber tramps.
Noe they have the rubber tramp rundevu or something like that it is held in Quartsize AZ.
sad and depressing movie.
I loved this film because it didn’t play, the victim card.
Yes, a thousand times yes!
Am I the only person on earth that did not like this film at all?
Kate winslet better. She is a shoked me her act in Ammonite. I Love Glenn close, Kate winslet, Cate blanchett and Meryl streep..
So sickening that Matt has to bring in politics to a completely introspective and personal film.
