I disagree with the narrative around superman stories has become, " he's a god how else do you tell a superman story if not grand and operatic" I agree the marvel mcu house style would not work, but the best superman story in recent memory was grounded in family drama, when it focused on superman and lois raising their son jon in a farm... When JUSTICE LEAGUE came out in 2017, people said that Joss Whedon was to blame for the finished product because of his involvement, but now we know the truth. I'm referring to his creative contributions, not him being a piece of shit on set. A director's cut (that's supposed to show us Zack Snyder's true vision) has been released and it confirms that Joss didn't write all of the comedic moments during his re-shoots, and the ones he did write were just an extension of what was already there (which makes sense considering the (briefer) comic relief moments in MAN OF STEEL and BATMAN V SUPERMAN). Hell, there's even a couple of jokes in this version that didn't end up in the theatrical cut.
    *Spoilers ahead!*
I think it's better to break this down into 4 categories:
    1) Same pros: The overall plot (which is fun) hasn't changed.
    2) Same cons: The overall plot (which is unmemorable and it doesn't live up to the hype of seeing this legendary team on screen) hasn't changed. Too many characters are crammed in, so they're not all properly developed. Zack makes so many individual moments feel like the most dramatic event in the world to the point of exhaustion.
    3) New pros: The fact that it's 362 minutes long and doesn't feel like a drag is impressive! The multiple subplots don't feel rushed anymore. Some scenes contain new songs that fit well, while others don't have any music anymore (which highlights the intensity of the moment). More time is dedicated to Cyborg at the beginning in a way that makes them even more likable than before. The Flash gets a brand new scene where he's at a pet store. He sees a young woman in danger and he saves her, while showing that he knows how to treat animals. Steppenwolf now has scenes where he and Darkseid (his leader) discuss the evil plan. Even though they're clichéd, I was so invested because Steppenwolf was showing a surprising amount of emotion. This is the first time the words "Wonder Woman" are uttered by a character, making her name official in-universe (wait, should this be a con since it took so long for this to happen?). There's a new epilogue that sets future movies up. I know that has annoyed people in the past, but it's done in a smarter way. Instead of hinting at what's to come, they show it. And because "it" is something that destroys the world, we see our heroes at probably their lowest point, so we feel the urge to find out how they arrived at this point. Not since a certain episode of LOST has foreshadowing (if you can even call it that) been this exciting!
    4) New cons: Some scenes contain new songs that don't fit. More time is dedicated to Aquaman at the beginning without much purpose. Do you remember his scene with Mera that explained his past? Now he also gets a scene with Vulko (a character that actually debuted in his solo movie) that's not different enough to avoid redundancy. The Flash gets a brand new scene where he's at a pet store. He sees a young woman in danger and takes more time than needed to save her. Sure, being cocky about his powers is part of the character, but if you're going to show him doing other things, can't they at least be things that matter?! Something other than admiring the woman's beauty?! How can you even feel smitten in a situation like this?! When Steppenwolf appears in Themyscira, the Amazons try to trap him in a chamber while Queen Hippolyta tries to protect the Mother Box. This time, said chamber falls from a cliff, but Steppenwolf and his Parademons emerge from the water. Look, this is the introduction of the villain. Anyone with half a brain knows that he won't be stopped so early in the story. This was trimmed in the theatrical cut (Steppenwolf simply destroys the doors of the chamber and exits) and it should've stayed that way. When he sees that Steppenwolf is about to kill his father, Cyborg attacks. This time, he lets his emotions take over, while he was a lot more in control in the theatrical cut. There's a new epilogue that's ruined once we discover that it's Batman having a nightmare. I know that doesn't mean it won't happen for real (it's most likely a premonition), but presenting it as a twist (especially one of the worst of its kind) made me roll my eyes. Not to mention that the image of him waking up makes the scene lose momentum. It gets worse once an alien (and future teammate) named Martian Manhunter shows up. Even though Batman has seen all of kinds of beings by this point, I still don't buy how he reacts so calmly to this visitor. Actually, his chill attitude implies that the nightmare didn't have any effect on him, taking away all the dramatic weight.
As you can see, it's all very balanced out, which is why I'm giving it the same grade.
    7/10

What was Christy smoking? Was she even watching the same movie? Lol. The Snyder Cut has a HUGE amount of heart and passion, much moreso than a lot of cookie cutter Marvel movies.
The core central theme of this film was parenthood and FAMILY. Flash with his dad, Cyborg and his father play a HUGE role, the theme of "a father twice over"... Superman getting the voices of both his fathers ("Fly son... it's time. Love them Kal, as we loved you...") Wonder Woman, with her motherland...
Flash literally saves the entire world in this one, with a spectacular time reversal scene.

Well after seeing Justice League Synder cut I have to say that a movie usually tells a story. And the Snyder Cut tells a report. This movie has a lot of muscle and blood but it lacks a heart.
Positives - There is great spectacle. Jack Snyder and Warner Brothers left nothing to chance as they very elaborately created a great spectacle. From the opening scene which leads us to the plot to introduction of every character to the face off between the team to sequence of Superman to the climax. Its great action and spectacle. And they have time to their advantage. But its well spent. Its entertaining, there is also an attempt to integrate strong emotional content.
Elaborate- Justice League covers all the bases. It leaves nothing to chance. And even though it may feel a bit long it ensures the audience get a feel of the characters and understand the story at every stage. So it may feel long and tad boring, it works to the advantage of the movie at the climax. Without the set up the climax that this movie creates could not have been created. And the climax is done really well. It provides all the thrills and actions you would have expected.
    Negatives
As I said it has the bones and muscles but not the heart. Conceptually there is nothing that is extraordinary. You have seen this in before in every movie. And at times the plot takes the easy way out. Its absolutely by the numbers. The track involving Superman and Cyborg are clear examples of that. It plays safe. It takes no risk with the story. It focuses on impressing the audience with the thrills , effects and action.
Compare with MCU - I still think the Marvel's Avengers was a better effort. I mean I still think it was not exceptional and neither is Justice League but conceptually Marvels Avengers, Infinity War and Endgame did a better job of getting the ensemble together and integrating them in the plot line. Endgame in particular did a great job, certainly till the climax. But overall their concept was better. Obviously they had more time and set up which Justice League lacks but with a 4 hour run time, you would have expected that narrative was a little more intricate. It does not feel so. And it also feels derivative. Even the emotional and interaction scenes between the characters feels kind of forced. In fact the best chemistry I felt was between was Bruce Wayne and Jeremy Irons, and Aqua Man and Aqua Girl. Another issue with DCU is that powers of their super heroes are exceeding the limits of rationality. The powers of Cyborg, Super Man, and Wonder Woman seemed way excess of their stated capabilities. That is another area where Marvel is better. Yes even if their plots define gravity, the powers of their super heroes on display are always very measured and within the sphere of rationality.
I would give Justice League a 6.5-7. Its executed really well but as I said it feels like report and not a story. It lacks originality and it lacks nuance.

Zack Snyder is too flashy for me. I've always hated his over use of slow motion, the shots that are made to look like religious paintings, the R ratings, the grimey-ness, they fetishization of people just beating the ever living shit out of each other, it's all just too much. On top of all that, his characters and scripts are just flat and lifeless. Christopher Nolan and Sam Raimi remain the guys who make superhero movies with adult appeal. I think their movies are far more mature, and they aren't rated R, nor are they these cheap soulless cash grab action comedies that the MCU is churning out. Something about making an R rated Batman and Superman movie is just ironically childish.
That being said, I can't wait to watch this. We're just in a lull right now due to COVID, and no studios have released any big movies since Tenet pretty much, so I'm just excited to watch a big dumb huge budget superhero epic with Batman.

Not a big fan of Snyder, BUT the responses to this movie are fascinating. Not all in one go probably, but I'm down to watch. Especially with a critic I trust calling saying it has more in common with arthouse cinema or cerebral superhero fair like ANG LEE'S HULK than it's contemporary superhero brethren. If someone calls ZSJL the "SATANTANGO OF SUPERHERO MOVIES," then I gotta watch.
I do think our expectations for SUPERHERO movies is what ultimately hurts us. Is ZSJL the best thing ever? Prolly not, but being self serious and big-headed about big characters is only a problem if you prefer a lot more "fun" in your superhero stew.
Yeah, best case scenario, we get an All-Star Superman/ Geoff Johns Flash type DC movie (that's why I love the wacky earnestness of AQUAMAN) but getting a Kingdom Come Justice League isn't the worst thing ever.

For many people it is. Seems obvious you just don't get this stuff. Probably never will. That's ok. To each there own. However, these characters are beloved by generations who we read comics, watched TV iterations and animated versions for the big and small screen. This live action extravaganza that is Zack Snyder's Justice League is the movie that these characters deserved. It's also the movie we deserved as comic book fans and movie fans. Undermine it all you want, but this movie and it's cinematic universe is something special.

Even the 30 second teaser for this movie was exhausting. Finally someone answered the question for me "If I didn't like MoS and I didn't like BvS, will I like this?" ANSWER: "No, this is just like those and also FOUR HOURS LONG".

I wouldn’t say it’s an expectation. It’s just been proven time and time again that it’s next to impossible to fully introduce and flesh out that amount of characters in a single movie. How else would these characters be fleshed out otherwise without their own films? I don’t think it’s a marvel comparison. I think it’s an observation.
If the guy next to you on the golf course is hitting a bunch of hole-in-one’s, and you aren’t. But you’re swinging in a completely different way... maybe your swing is just bad?
Nothing against Zach Snyder, but I don’t think he’s great enough of a filmmaker to pull off 5 hero introductions in a sub-3 hour long film. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • @ryanwall5760
      @ryanwall5760 Před 3 lety

You’re again focusing on something that’s an expectation nowhere else in cinema. You don’t get backstories to every character in every film- especially ensemble films which Superhero Teamups are a sub-genre of. Take heist movies for example. You get a loose outline of archetypes mixed with personalities, quirks, and abilities of each teammate with focus on a couple of them at best. People love heist movies, they work all the time. Those characters do not have or need separate origins films to work. Why are you imposing this arbitrary decision on the super heroes?

Of course, they have a built in bias to love this version of Justice League, given that they are comic book aficionados. The story of this guy who had to step down from a project to have a corporate hack job of his movie made, then come back and get his fully realized vision out there is something that people who are movie critics are going to get behind. It also has the benefit of coming out after we have seen nothing this big and exciting for a long time because of COVID. If this was the movie that came out in 2017, it probably would have done a lot worse without the benefits of the story behind it and the COVID lull of exciting movies.

Not really when you take into consideration a lot was being crammed intot his movie because its potentially the director's last DCEU movie. Also, Zack himself isn't getting paid for this, he's doing it for his deceased daughter and for the fans of his films. The movie isn't really made for the general audience per se, its more for the hardcore fans really. The only reason it is on HBO max and you have to pay for it is because WB wouldn't give Zack the rights to finish his films and he had to take some money for polishing the CGI. If he could pay it with his pocket and release it for free, he would, but he couldn't.

You can tell none of them are into comic books. They could care less about what the fans wanted like Superman in the original comic book black suit. Also what's wrong with making it gritty? Marvel is boring now and ruined by Disney's hypocritical virtue signaling and generically repetitive, syrupy plots. That's what I like about DC's movies. Even if the execution turns out messy at least they tried something different.

@@oddjob914 Don't agree, Superman was more brooding, doubtful and introspective then ever before in Snyder's films. Kind of like a being who would not know what to do if instilled with God like powers? The first Wonder Woman movie was not only very good. But also presented a strong super heroine who wasn't really preachy and woke but exciting to watch and a great role model for women. Also very much honoring both the old TV series as well as comic books and animation. Despite the sequel's problems WW is much more popular then any female Marvel character to date. Aquaman, a character which has been the butt of many jokes for decades was reinvented and somewhat redeemed. In a dumb, but fun, and very one of a kind looking action movie. Batman as played by both Christian Bale and Ben Affleck was more then ever shown on film to be more powerful, intelligent and in physical form, comic book like then ever before. Also during the Christian Bale era director Christopher Nolan made a very unusual choice not just to cast a fine actress, who is also attractive as Catwoman. But still unconventionally goes against the traditonal image of the character, Anne Hathaway. Now despite the criticism of Hathaway's casting by many before the movie was released she is considered to be the best and most realistic Catwoman, at least on film to date. I agree, but I still enjoy to this day Michelle Pfeiffer's campy take in the Tim Burton days. Soon we're gonna get another unconventional choice in Batman casting with Robert Pattinson in the title role. And an even better choice for Catwoman, Zoe Kravitz. Admittedly Warner/DC's leaps of faith although daring can turn out to be disastrous...cough cough...Jesse Eisenberg and Jared Leto playing the two biggest Supervillians, I dunno, ever? (Cue facepalm)...The Fantabulous something...something.. ..of Harley Quinn. But Heath Ledger, a former stand-up named Michael Keaton! Somebody knew what they were doing even when the choices seemed nuts over there! Plus, the DC movies look much more gritty then Marvel's. So now tell me DC and Marvel are the same?

  • @alexgraetzer

I feel like Matt is backtracking on his original review. He said that the movie works thanks to Whedon, and I agree. Whedon might be an asshole but after seeing this long, boring, sepia mess, one can understand the changes he made to the story. The best part imho was Batman telling Flash how he should focus on saving only one person, and that seems to have been all Whedon. Again, abusive asshole, but his version was tighter and didn't meander in all the unnecessary subplots. Snyder even tried to give the janitor some sort of strange backstory that went nowhere. And props to Ray Fisher for calling out abuse and sticking to his guns but I found his performance grating and his character super annoying and whiney, I get it´s a sad story but it came off so off-putting. The Iris West scene might have looked nice but it was completely unnecessary, tbh so was the epilogue, everyone is better off just watching Justice League Dark: Apokolips War instead.

    • @cap00ify
      @cap00ify Před 3 lety

I enjoyed the "new" Cyborg stuff and Ray Fisher's performance - IMO the most redeeming change in this new cut. Maybe ironically, given how rounded and contained a story it is, it also kind of reveals why his story was perhaps the easiest area to cut and bring down the entirely impractical run time (even while its absence brings down the quality of the film).
Relatedly, I'm sure this is my naivete, but while I totally appreciate directors' frustration with studio meddling and cutting, if this 4-hour cut was genuinely Zack Snyder's original vision, at what point does a director lose the high ground to complain when the studio is forced to trim it down and release something that is inevitably messy and chopped up?
