Is Nomadland the BEST movie of the year?
This film follows a woman in her sixties who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad.

Thanks so much for watching!
What is your FAVORITE movie of the year so far??
I would say Tenet or The Gentlemen, but I think everyone is picking these 2 so I'm going with Corpus Christi and Monos. If you have the chance Austin, go and see them!!!
color out of space my favorite movie this year
Palm Springs and I'm Thinking of Ending Things
I'd say probably Tenet but I haven't watched that many movies this year
The trial of the Chicago 7
Hey Austin! So my grandma is actually Linda May, one of the Nomads that befriends Fern. She said often time the script would say “build a puzzle” or “show Fren how to clean the bathroom. Fern’s story kinda shadows my Grandma’s at time. Occasionally scenes would have actual lines. Like when they’re sitting in her tiny trailer “the squeeze inn” and she’s telling Fern about her depression. That is her real story. So they essentially partnered together and just layer her story out so it could flow best. Oh also for set design, the RTR scene, those were actually the nomads real vans, buses, and trailers! So a lot of the set was authentic. I hope this answered some of your questions!
It is so touching to see people like you love and connect with this movie that we’ve been waiting for 3 years to see!
I was in many of those scenes. This was filmed in the location where I was many times. Chloe even talked to me at length. Camped with Bob Wells for two weeks. The sit downs were ethereal. Saw my camper in the background. And I was just to the left of the burning van celebration shot. "On the road again..." Been a nomad for years this movie I just cried through it.
Linda May was the best part of the movie!
I'm late but pleeeeease send my best regards to your grammy!!! Loved her sooo much💖💖
Worst part is when Fern didn't go see The Avengers
Why is the number of likes so low on this?
Paid the $25 and watched the NYFF Virtual Screening as well. Well worth it. ‘Swankie’ should get a supporting actress nod for that monologue early on.
Oh yes. So good
your t-shirt speaks to me on a personal level
Hahaha yes
I miss going to the theater too.
I think I’m extra emotional today because of coping with a loss, but reading that t-shirt actually made me tear up.
Sounds like a unique cinematic take, AND the pedigree with Searchlight Studio (formerly Fox Searchlight) helps its Oscar chances. Birdman, The Shape of Water, 12 Years a Slave and Slumdog Millionaire all won BP - oh, and let’s not forget McDormand in the Searchlight film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.
It's an Amazon movie and it's obvious after 10 minutes that is was made to sell Amazon stock.
I'm planning on going somewhat nomadic next year. I've been studying vanlife quite a bit lately. So, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this.
It’s so real I mean I was just with the main character the whole time on her journey.
I'm on season 7 of The Office. Almost to the episode where Michael leaves. Its epic
YES
I'm on season 9 the final season. It's a great and frickin hilarious show. Michael Scott would be a cool boss for a while. Lol.
@@StaticBlaster yeah, its awesome. I hear season 8 and 9 go down. Is that true?
I cannot wait to see this Movie! I am a living Nomad for 5 years now! #NomadLifeRocks!
Swankie is My real life friend!💗

I saw it Saturday night too. As a person who is a Nomad and who knows some of these people, I love love love this movie! It is bittersweet, and I loved Francis McDormand's arc in this movie. People not attracted to the lifestyle might not realize that there is a happy ending. But I love a movie that lets me decide how to feel and isn't obviously jerking me to feel this and that. This one is masterful. (Loved The Rider too!)
It would be cool if there was a license plate like that but of the four, four-corner states. I notice they have Arizona in there. That's what made me think of this.
AZ is one of the primary nomad states due to its’ millions of acres of free public land which is excellent for Boondocking.
Just watched this and loved it.
Frances McDormand is sensational, she just gets better and better with age, better here than her turn 3 Billboards which won her the Oscar.
For me though, the film really shines in McDormand's interactions with the genuine American nomads included in the movie, almost ad libbed. Completely agree with you, entirely real and completely heartfelt.
Wonderful film.
At this rate Frances McDormand will have to buy a new house just to storage her Oscars.
@Robert Lee, Countertenor it makes sense, it's just not everybody caught it 😞
I love Francis Mcdormand she's great. Watched Burn After Reading the other night again and it's so good! Her, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Tilda Swinton. Brad and George are both playing characters that are far from the types of roles they usually play and I love it
I’m so excited to watch Nomadland. Great review, Austin!
Many of the nomads in this movie have popular CZcams channels, especially Bob Wells. So they’re used to being in front of a camera and performing. 🤑
Correct. Bob is no stranger to the camera.
Just a year late watching this moving movie. Been following van lifers for a few months and Bob Wells and the ending - his story is 1000 authentic as is he. He is a godsend to the nomadic community 🙏💙
A nomadland review by Austin in notification..... Open video automatically and like clicked 😎😎
🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻
Just watched it, could have kept watching it if it went on for another hour or two. Frances McDormand is her usual great self.
Best movie I've seen since "1917!" Great review!
Another well done Review Austin, keep up the hard work!
Julie
Thanks so much!:)
I just watched this movie and I come here to watch your review. Man you hit EVERY SINGLE POINT of my feeling without spoiling anything. You are a GREAT movie reviewer. ❤️👍🏼 Thank you. Will Oscar have a Best Movie Review Award? 🙂
This was so great, I kept having to remind myself it wasn't a documentary. It fealt like a camera just following around a real person. It doesn't get corny and really works to pull genuine drama.
Ayy glad to see another video! Saw Donnie Brasco today, thoughts on that film? Great review :)
Ayye good movie for sure!
That movie is in my list. How was it?
@@reviewer49642 I really enjoyed it, great story and amazing that it's based on the truth
What was this movie tied with? Trial or Dune or Tenet?

Not that anyone would miss the Oscars if they went away--I usually don't take much stock in the movies they nominate. This movie, however, really spoke to me. As someone who lost their entire family in the span of a year, I can see the need to get away, find yourself and figure out where you belong. There are some people who never find a place that feels like home and wander endlessly looking for it; believing that somewhere, some place you can capture that feeling of belonging to a place but you can't because the people that made that place everything you hoped it could be have departed. As Fern had to learn, that emptiness never leaves you but in spite of not being able to plant roots you'll see those that have departed "on down the road."
I had a few scenes in this. I wonder if they cut em
Looking forward to seeing it!
You gonna do a Fargo season 4 review Austin?
As a nomad, I’m looking forward to seeing the film. Other nomads I know are the “non-actors” in the film.
It’s a lifestyle choice for many, it’s a necessity for others.
Yes, there are challenges just like in sticks-n-bricks. Let’s stop making separation where there is none. There’s no we/they us/them, it’s we/us.
As for pooping in a bucket, enough. People have scooped and buried in Nature since the beginning. It’s not strange or crazy or weird or dangerous or...it just is.
Judge not and walk a mile in those shoes. There but for Grace🙏🏻
Can I borrow that T shirt Austin? It's so simple yet conveys my everyday thoughts in 4 words.
Haha you are so right!
@@AustinBurke You need to sell mercy! LOL
Where do I watch this movie?
How do I see this movie??
How are you not going to say Frances Macdormand first when listing "starring"??
first!
So excited for this one!
Stunning film indeed.
Im very excited for this movie
Is Frances McDormand the next Daniel Day Lewis? I have only really seen her in 3 Billboards but she was spellbinding in that too.
She’s definitely too-notch
She's in the movie Fargo, check that out if you haven't seen it
@@gman4011 oh yea, I have seen it a while back and remember her now. Need to rewatch although I liked the tv show that came afterwards better.
My 2 favorite actors!
I'm definitely looking forward to this movie as I have been watching more 'Oscar bait' movies. Also on a previous review I recommended that you watch The Owl House. Just letting you know that it's on Disney+ on October 30
Oh yes! I need to request a screener
@@AustinBurke It's not a movie BTW it's a show
If you enjoy watching Francis staring at sunsets, then this is your movie
Or having diarrhea
I cant wait to see it!
I must see it!!
How many hours left for the next video.i am waiting for it 😀🙏
Tomorrow... Maybe! We’ll see!
@@AustinBurke 😀thanks for answering austin
I watched Songs my Brothers Taught me just to get into the feeling of Chloe Zhao's style and I was blown away. After recently watching Fargo, I'm even more ready to see Frances McDormand kill it on screen. But mostly, I'm ready to be lost in this movie. The style, the casting, the cinematography all point to a film we're supposed to be lost in. This may be the movie made for me
Love your review! You’re right, this film is not for everyone and unfortunately it wasn’t for me. While I can agree that McDormand displays some complex emotions throughout I can’t say it’s her best or even one of the best of 2020 yet I’d be a stupid man to bet against her Oscar odds. The direction was great with the performances Zhao was able to get from the non-actors and the cinematography is haunting at times. But the story was way too mundane and slow for me to see this as Best-Picture-winning material. Of course, that’s just my quick take.
Did it feel like a movie or a documentary?
Documentary more-so, without the interviews!
I found it more like a movie than a doc, myself.
70% documentary but the rest is cinematic
When will you review The Haunting of Bly Manor?
October 5th!
Waiting for it...
Your Oscar prediction was right.
Did you do a spoiler review of Enola Holmes?
I was waiting for this since yesterday's live 😍😍
Nice
I hardy watch American made movies until Oscar season
Yes, this was a great movie!
Hey Austin have u finished "haunting of bly manor" yet??
Almost!!
Great review as always man! I know this is a random question lol but have you seen Donnie Darko? It’s a film I’ve seen a couple times now and I’ve really come to love it.
Best movie ever!!!👍
Did you already know this was semi-documentary before seeing it? Because I didn’t know almost all of the casts except McDormand were real people before (and during) watching it (like I didn’t with any movies when I go see it) and I got bored by it 😕
I really wanted to love this movie, and the first half was real & compelling, but then Mcdormand (I think her real last name was Smith) became so annoying, unrelatable, closed off, self righteous, and unlikeable. All take, judgemental and no give. She didnt even take a dog in at the start. Everything else about the movie was great and a real eye opener.
Native Indians been living in trailers for decades half a century I live in my van in Michigan not the comfortable heat come to Detroit and film
I loved this movie
Most nomads are searching for the meaning to their lives. They search but they do not find. They do not find it because they refuse to open their eyes. They are as blind people stumbling in the dark. Why do they not see? Because, for some, they were once misled and they cling to that belief. A belief that so many others have. They reason that if so many people have the same belief then it must be the way. When they are offered a different way out of the dark they refuse to leave the others. Peer pressure keeps them from choosing the right path. For others, it's just stubborn ignorance of the truth. Open your eyes and mind. Do not follow your heart. Your heart can not be trusted. Your heart can not learn to know the difference between right and wrong. Seek out accurate knowledge and apply it to your life. Do not blindly follow others. When you find the way do not let anyone hold you back.
It should get it
Do you have to "act" when playing yourself?
i did not hate this movie the real nomads also did not hate.
I think it's funny that you compare to to Florida Project. Because 30 min in that's what we thought too. They were both really boring and kinda pointless. You say this is spoiler free, but I'm not sure what spoilers you could give even of you wanted to.
Are Mckenna Grace coming in haunting of blu manor house and how many episode in the show I know u are watching it right now or finished it .
I miss the fancast video maybe can u do moon knight or knife out sequel fancast ? 🤞🏻
A lot of the nomads live like that by choice.
Movie was good but living that way does not look good at all to me if this movie is accurate!
0:57 similar to under the skin.
Is this more docudrama than traditional straight forward movie?
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This movie is #4 of Obama’s movie list for 2020
If Swankie was a real person, she didn't actually die during filming did she?
Duh haha
Did her husband take his life?
The movie is so depressing. Loneliness is a bitch.
Not sure if this is a movie for me
Florida Project > Nomadland
I would like to give this movie the award for most overrated film of the year
that award go to Promising Young Woman.
@@matt11708sexist
Living in the Westcoast, the Homeless population is unbelievable. It will definitely hit me watching this movie.
Hillbilly Eulogy should have been nominated for best picture over this snooze fest
This film is so much less than that
When you have people who act themselves. That is a documentary
Depressing, boring movie.
Could only sit through 25 minutes of it. No plot, repetitious, and a huge waste of Francis Mcdormand's talents.
Live by the bucket, die by the bucket.
Nomadland =😴😴
What movie did you watch, nothing happened in the whole damn movie and I mean nothing happened soooooo boring and I love boring but this was beyond boring .. no plot no interesting people all boring snorjobs of people doing depresssong crap and not true
This movie is boring boring boring
I just tried watching this film. It is a shameless Amzon commercial. Fran Mcdormand should be embarrassed.
To be fair amazon have nothing to do with the distribution of this film. And do Amazon really need a commercial? No. Not at all. It's just realistic that she would be able to find work there as a temporary warehouse worker
