Cheque Mate (Full Movie)

  • The film is about everyday life of a film maker/creatives life, alive with extra ordinary characters with different intentions but the same goals. It tries to answer the question whether the end justifies the means. What’s even more interesting about the story is the way it is told in two seemingly parallel universes that merge into one. We do hope that viewers appreciate this aspect and find the payoff rewarding
Auudi Rowa does a very convincing job playing Sanaa while Brian Ogola effortlessly steps into the role of Zubedi gently guiding the camera to focus on him. Other A class actors as well fill the supporting roles Lucy Njoroge,Peter Kawa,Faith Kibathi and Mwamburi Maole, ensuring that cheque mate is a conversation worth having, a movie that deserves your attention

This is great. Great acting too, and I think other pros can speak for the technical bit but I like it too. Scriptwise, this script speaks to the heart. Anybody in the Kenyan art scene (I don't have the courage to call it an industry) will relate. It is one of the most real local scripts I have seen. A few loopholes though, I feel the scene at the restaurant was unnecessary. The theme of sexual harassment (which I think was supposed to be portrayed here) is so big to be just mentioned in passing without a resolve. It is as big as the theme of money which is adequately tackled. I think it would work either as a film on its own or given more prominence even in the current script but I guess that would make the film longer. Second, the supposed lynching of the rogue producer dragged for a bit long than necessary. Also question remains, how does that solve the actors' financial predicament at that moment?
Something is missing too:signing of the contracts, and why those contracts do not work. Isn't it because people believe it takes a lot of money and time to file a lawsuit? Isn't the legal way something to explore too?
All in all, this is a good film. I will rate 6/10.
