"A city trapped somewhere between 1932 and 1992" you described exactly what I miss about Gotham's true aesthetic.
Right? It just doesn't feel the same with more modernized looks. Even when it looked like it was in the 80's it was off.
Ive always preferred an older, historic, more grungy looking Gotham, like the Arkham City area and the Animated Series Gotham.
@@theboi1885 the Gotham aesthetic always felt very gothic to me
@@amadeus6418 Agreed. I would put it more under a Gothic Revival style.
Gotham should look like a Old London, Gotham is an old city, makes sense and Batman would look so badass standing in a gargoyle like Daredevil stands in the top of old churchs in the comics
This show gave Mr. Freeze his incredible tragic backstory, introduced Harley Quinn & brought in the definitive voices for Batman & Joker! Not bad for a kid’s cartoon lol.
Given that Harley Quinn has become something of a litmus test for people with unhealthy relationship fantasies I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Introducing a litmus test will never be a bad thing
Mr freeze was not cool about it talk about the ice cold treatment! Ha ha ha pun intended!
jliller That's because the adaptation after DCAU did a terrible job defining their relationship. In Batman TAS, everyone knows that her relationship with Joker is toxic and helping her to leave joker.
The end of the Baby Doll episode legitimately hurts me which is weird since very few things do.

Funny how the animated Batman was actually LESS cartoony than the Joel Schumacher films.
The tone was based of the Tim Burton Batman movie which preceded the Joel Schumacher
@@s4xtt Burton specializes in dark, artistic, and absurd. No one should try to copy his style except for Sam Raimi.
@@MonstrousEthicist Actually copying Burtons style seemed to work quite well for this series.
Ouch tho
It was based off the Burton films but definitely not his style. Burton's gotham looked like Medieval England and B:TAS Gotham looked like 1940's New York.

Literally, in Harley's case. She was created for this series.
This show is the reason she’s one of my favorite Batman villains
We need a compilation of Alfred’s sick burns.
I think there is one
"I drew you a bath, sir." Shows Bruce a picture of a bathtub.
Some:
“Imagine that sir, some dressed in a frightening costume running around scaring people, what will they think of next?”
Batman: You think I’m crazy don’t you?
Alfred: In what sense, Master Bruce?
Batman: You think you know me.
Alfred: I diapered your bottom; I bloody well ought to!
Flash: "Hey, that's a giant dinosaur!"
Alfred: "And I thought Batman was the detective."
"I am vengeance. I am the night. I am Batman." Still gives me chills after all these years. Every time.

My favorite episode of this is when a nobody SEEMS to have killed Batman and the Joker falls to pieces in grief and holds a wake for him. They have Batman's cowl on which the Joker has put a "kick me" sign, all the while crying through the eulogy. It was awesome.
“The Man Who Killed Batman”… That episode was a good one
"Does this batman dance?"

Am I Blue
Trippy Justice League ep.
Let alone well enough to where Circe and Zatana were swooning hard (and I think Circe was even in joyful tears).
This series was so good, there is one scene in it that cemented batman as my favorite superhero.
The Joker kidnaps one of batmans ladies and takes her to a warehouse where she is tied up and on a conveyor belt pulling into a big crushing machine. Batman stands between the joker and his exit, so joker gives him an ultimatum.
"If you try to stop me she will die, if you save her I get away."
So Batman smiles, and reaches out of frame to hit a switch and shut the power off.
It was hilarious, and I loved the idea that that it was resolved by just paying attention to your surroundings and being smart.
The ultimatum is actually came from Harley Quinn, and the lady is Catwoman, in the later half of "Almost got 'im."

Only a complete idiot makes a comment repeating what was said in the video. Only thing worse are people who like their comments.
Hands-down, the best, most nuanced, and ACCURATE depiction of The Dark Knight, outside of the comics themselves.
The Paul Dini team should give lectures on their understanding of the Batman character. THEY GET IT. They understand WHY this character has been a cultural icon for 80 years.
And quite right, it didn't 'dumb down' things to 'children's level.' It assumed kids' intelligence and their ability to deal with the darker story elements which sometimes came up.
Great characters, great storytelling, great SHOW.
Possibly even a BETTER depiction than some of the comics versions.
@@Moondarq Some, absolutely. I'm quite new to the comics and have only read some of the main ones, but I love most of the ones I've read. Unfortunately, since this franchise has been around since 1939, it's bound to have some missteps, though the only one I didn't like from what I've read was Hush (Jim Lee was amazing, though)
Oh no you did not just ignore Bruce Timm
@@OctacleEditsDini is most of the reasom why BTAS is so good. The Art style is from Timm but he was no more than a Feige in this universe. Dini is the true Dark Knight of this entire period.

Commissioner Gordon shouldnt be in that position if he cant handle Batman entrances.
This show did more character development for Batman, his side kicks, and all the villains, than all the movies combined. It will always be a treasured classic.
To be fair, 85 episodes (Plus 24 more if you count The New Batman Adventures) is a lot more time to properly introduce/develop the entire Batman supporting cast than five reboots with 11 films.
That's honestly very good and sad judging by the amount of movies we have today Thanks to the dcau
Kevin Conroy's passing sent me here. RIP the voice of Batman.

Really did, the redesign of two face, and Mr freezes back story stand out.
Yes! Clayface, Two-face, Harley, Penguin, Riddler, Clock King, Ra's al ghul, Poison Ivy, and these are just a few great ones that came off from my head.
Definitely
Rest In Peace, Kevin Conroy (the best Batman ever).
Missed that joker burn on two face when says "Get out of my face clown" and he replies "Which one?"
My external drive broke and I lost almost all data from the last 8 years. But I didn't lose Batman the animated series and Avatar the last airbender, because I had them backed up.. Priorities.

Now that I’ve finally watched the series, I can say without a doubt…
Holy crap, that “terrible marksmanship” bit was right on the money. Seriously, some scenes the bad guys are shooting directly AROUND the completely stationary targets. It’d be funny if it weren’t so pathetic.
Oh what the heck, I’ll laugh anyway.
Still though, great show.
Ay, nice reference. That's a super dark cartoon right there.
At least they had guns they could actually shoot. Most cartoons around then had lasers they could just wave around and never actually do anything with.
“If you don’t like the movie, I’ve got slides!”
I will never get over the fact that the goons literally shot AROUND bats and Montoya.
"Think of it, Batman. To never again walk on a summer's day with the hot wind in your face, and a warm hand to hold. Oh yes... I'd kill for that."
And then the contemporary live action Freeze: Ice to meet you
I'm not ashamed to admit I teared up when hearing that line again. I always felt bad for Dr. Fries, man. Dude just wanted to cure his wife.
"childrens shows" were different back then..
@mjolnir, shows back then didn't treat children like soft morons.
@@bozoforce Yes they did.
One of the major reasons the Arkham video game series was so good, was because they based it primarily on this Batman universe, and not on many of the others.
It was also inspired by an original batman horror comic with pretty much the same story. I forgot the exact name but it is something like Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. (Feel free to correct me on the name if it is wrong.) I tried to read it but it honestly freaked me out too much. The style of it is so chilling.
The artstyle and aesthetic of this series is unrivalled
We need more people shaped like rectangles in cartoons again
Rest in peace kevin conroy the truly legend batman 😢
"See DC, that's all we want. A definite portrait of a beloved character that balances multiple tones across dozens of hours that can only happen with a perfect creative team and lands at the perfect time in the cultural zeitgeist ."
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Exactly. I was like, "Yeah, EpicVoiceGuy gets it."
Well they could have said Warner Bros, the company that actually makes the adaptations.
Not dc you mean WB
Is that so hard!?
The genius behind this quote shows the issue with the DC movies. No matter how good or bad they are people arent going to enjoy them because they arent the tone that most want. Everyone expects the dc films to be just like marvels but when they arent the same tone or theme everyone just says they’re bad. DC cant win with a darker/gritty tone if they made the best movie ever because it’s not a bright and colorful comedy superhero movie like most people want.

Notes on BTAS:
1. This show was really magical.
2. They used an orchestra for every episode.
3. Those guns? They called them "dark deco weapons" in the script to be able to slide them past the censors.
4. "Dark deco" is what they called the visual style of Gotham, which the comics then adapted FROM the show.
5. Adam West makes a guest appearance on the show as the washed up tv superhero.
6. Harley Q originated from this show.
7. The reason why Batman could launch so many bad guys off of rooftops is because they added an "after groan", which is a shot of the villain on the ground and groaning, showing he wasnt dead. (censors wanted it)

[Batman grabs Batgirl's ass.]
"Commissioner Gordon, a humble civil servant tormented by a billionaire psychopath; determined to drive him insane."
True
WellBeSerious12 🤣😂🤣😂
made by the same dude and acts like it's in this universe
This particular bit has made me cry laughing...I don’t even know why 😂 the bit when he does his neck is priceless
This cartoon was what led me to become a huge Batman fan. I would never have met Scarecrow, Mad Hatter, Two-Face or Poison Ivy without it. And Scarecrow and Mad Hatter wound up becoming my top two all-time favorite Batman villains.
no-one would have seen Harley quinn without it, she was created for the cartoon
Same
Mr. Freeze would still just be some weirdo with a cold fetish without this show.
HANDS DOWN the best animated series EVEN over X-Men and I know that sounds crazy but this was an absolute masterpiece
When adult life doesn't quite work out the way you'd hope and everything seems hopeless and bleak... you can always come back to your childhood hero and it makes everything seem like it's going to be okay. Knowing Kevin Conroy isn't with us anymore... I can't explain how that makes me feel. In essence he was my childhood hero and now he's gone. Celebrity deaths never occur to me or even bother me in the slightest but his... I can't shake it.
I get the feeling. It's a terrible loss to us all. Hugs and thoughts are with you.
i loved the weird art deco style of batman animated because for me - batman and superman best work in a weird alternate universe where time is muddy and styles are mixed and matched
Yeah. It looks cool. It reminds me of the images of how people in the thirties thought the nineties would look.
