just relistened to this as at 54 I get ready for my first marathon next week at Boston. I remembered thinking about how special Des was once I first listened to this and 4 years later, its even more impactful

I was crying at work watching her win Boston! Des is my favorite runner.

Running makes you a better runner
She is such an inspiration! I simply love her! I've been rooting for her way before her win, and she's the reason why I picked up running again as a sport that eventually lead to me running my first marathon early this year! Thank you for doing this podcast with her :)

I hope when she retires that she still does local races. I remember years ago I was in a 15k in Cincinnati and the lead runners were coming back and in second place was Bill Rodgers. It was the coolest thing ever. And he wasn't a young guy anymore and he was enjoying the race just like anyone else.
Traverse City is my hometown and no matter where I live(currently Maryland and next Colorado!) I'm always thinking about playing on the dunes and jumping in the lake ✨The most beautiful place. About to go on vacation there in 2 days! Can't wait to get my feet in the sand ☀️ Great interview. I ran in highschool and have always had this little dream that I would get back into running. Watching you guys talk like this makes me crave it!!! Just have to balance taking care of my baby and toddler and trying to build my body back up again. I'm so weak it's not even funny. Thanks for the inspiration 💫

Really enjoyed the interview. And found the visual perspective to the podcast. Seeing speakers' face expressions makes it more vivid. Des is an inspiration, just "to be you", and of course to show up. :) shared it with a few friends already, thanks Rich. One point that I think all of the interviewees should be asked more about is 'why you do what you do', the answer is non-linear, and it is really interesting to see different angle on how "achieved" people see it themselves. I think even a reaction to such question tells a million things about a person. Nonetheless, outstanding episode!

Just listened to thos again. Great interview. But this time, as when I listened to it originally, didn't appreciate to be called a "couch cruiser marathoner trying to break 4 hours" by Rich. No one training for a marathon should be called a couch anything.

It’s amazing that two no names won that year due to the conditions.
Cool story, and am a huge fan of Rich but Desiree is looking quite sick/unhealthy. It would've been decent to hear Rich discuss the deleterious effects this sport and the training has on her health.
That is ridiculous. She looks beautiful and healthy. (And obviously she *is* healthy, or she couldn't have done what she did.)
She is as healthy as a horse. She trains so much that she has little to no body fat...which, is probably why you think she is unhealthy. As a runner myself, I can honestly say that running really takes the weight off of you.
It’s always Rich talking - he’s so annoying
Let's be real here folks. Desi is not at the level of elite kenyans or Ethiopian female marathoners. Had the weather in Boston been picture perfect on marathon day there was no way in hell she would have won. Bad weather conditions and not "her conditioning" creating the opportunity for her to win. I wouldn't say it was a good win or a good time. It was a rainout for the elite she just stayed on course and "Jogged" across the finish line for the win. It turned into was a training run with prize money.
That's the whole point, there is NO PERFECT day for a marathon. You can't plan out the weather. She was built to run that course, whether it be rain, cold, snow, etc. So what if she didn't complete the run at the "elite Kenyan or Ethiopian" level, that's fine, neither did they during those conditions! She did the work and based on the conditions she was the best competitor for that track. It's that simple.
What a nasty thing to say
