#68 - Harvey Lewis - Ultra Runner - 2023 Big's Backyard Ultra Winner

The Necessary Entrepreneur welcomes Ultra Runner and 2023’s World Champion of Big’s Backyard Ultra, Harvey Lewis. Big’s Backyard is the original backyard ultra, invented by Lazarus Lake. For those of you who are unfamiliar it’s a last man standing event. This year Harvey broke the world record at 108 straight hours covering 450 miles. We helped Harvey put together a fundraiser with a goal of reaching $100,000 for the Brighton Center right here in Northern Kentucky. The Brighton Center’s mission is to create opportunities for individuals and families to reach self-sufficiency through support systems with some examples including down-payment assistance on home purchases, building beds for underprivileged families, and the list goes on and on. Harvey is a local high school government teacher. He didn’t begin running until high school. He was never the first in the pack but loved to run. It took him 17 years to even qualify for the Boston Marathon and many years after that to win his first ultra marathon. He put the effort in and just kept grinding. There’s also a documentary about him completing the Appalachian Trail with his dad called “Like Harvey, Like Son” which is available on Amazon Prime. Harvey says the Appalachian Trail helped build his endurance for Big’s Backyard Ultra. He’s currently writing a book that details his biggest running secrets due out in 2024.

I watched live, checking in every hour that I could and I can’t remember a race I was more excited to watch than this one. It’s absolutely amazing the distances these runners were able to accomplish. I love running, but I am years and years away from even being able to comprehend my body being able to tolerate one day of this endurance. Huge congratulations to all runners, and to the champ Harvey.

I also watched it live. It is hard to imagine the grit and determination it took to be able to accomplish such a feat, it’s truly inspiring. Keep grinding and pushing and one day you’ll get there!!
