  • My turtle became gravid rather unexpectedly, so I constructed a suitable nesting box immediately. I'm not an expert on nesting boxes, but I have read that for many aquatic turtles of this size and species, a large cement mixing tub makes a good container for your substrate. The frame serves to keep it elevated. The hardware netting and acrylic sides serve to keep the turtles from escaping.
Let me know what you think, if you have any ideas on how to improve this nesting box - let me know!

So so helpful! 4 Questions for ya @GregJones :
    1. Would you suggest this kind of method for red eared sliders as well for a nesting box?
    2. What is the minimum amount of space that you would say would be adequate for a nesting area?
    3. Lastly, how do you know your turtle is pregnant? I know that turtles lay eggs both fertile (from mating) and non-fertile (non-mating). I have 3 baby Red Eared Sliders right now, two boys and one girl. They are only about five months old, but trying to get prepared and educated for future!
    4. Lastly, if I don't want them to mate (I can't afford to do that as of now), do you have any recommendations on how to best separate males and females?
    Thank you for your help!!

    Hello!
My turtle laid 4 eggs in the water yesterday.
So I am not sure if she is going to lay more eggs later. I was wondering if I should make the nesting box with soil inside of it. If I do, do I have to connect the water tank with the nesting box? I would really appreciate it if you can answer my question asap! Thank you! (The turtle is inside the water tank right now.)
