- Volotea Trip Report flying from Athens to Mykonos onboard one of the Volotea A319 on a weird and weather-changing afternoon with a lot of haze near to Athens but sunny and nice over Mykonos island.
A nice and very short flight from Athens to Mykonos onboard one of the Volotea Airbus A319. When I say short it means extremely short: we didn't have any cruise flight, we just climbed and descent.
On this flight, we had the APU (Auxiliar Power Unit) inoperative, which increased the delay that we already had, as they arrived late from its previous flight (Heraklion), probably for the same reason. In the video, I will let you know the basic points and consequences of having the APU inoperative.
Apart from the delay, it was a quite comfortable flight. 25 minutes in the air, a lot of haze, and great views of Mykonos island during the approach and landing on runway 34.

Nice blue jet bridges in Athens. Schiphol has white jet bridges, because other colors made it too warm inside. So I wonder if the Greek jet bridges are hot. But they seem to use the bus. And that was a nice ride in the forbidden area of the airport. I really enjoyed that part of the video. Also the entering the plane was exceptionally good again in this video.
At the moment they use the jetbridge, but the passengers don't get to the terminal directly. Instead, they have to go down the jetbridge and go by bus to a special area where the covid requirements are checked.

Ayer jueves descubrí algo que no sabía del canal: que también hacías Trip Report de trenes... Di de casualidad con un viaje trenero de Kosice a. Bratislava jeje muy chulo el vídeo... Los trenes son una pasión para mí... Es que en Oviedo me crié con una vía de FEVE muy próxima a casa...

Aprovecho para preguntarte un par de curiosidades:
1. Estando en Barajas esperando un vuelo a Sevilla con Iberia, el avión tenía conectado en la parte de abajo una enorme manguera amarilla, así como de un material muy flexible. Sabrías decirme que era? Por curiosidad.
2. Durante el vuelo, el APU no es necesario nunca? Por ejemplo, se puede dar el caso que se apague un motor en pleno vuelo, se podría volver a arrancar, se necesita el APU?

Respondiendo a tus preguntas:
1. La "mangera amarilla" es el tubo del aire acondicionado externo. En muchos aeropuertos está prohibido tener el APU encendida (para reducir ruido) más del tiempo estrictamente necesario. De ahí que se proporcione aire acondicionado externo (que, además, es más eficiente en términos de coste que tener el APU encendida).
2. En condiciones normales, el APU va siempre apagada en vuelo. Para re-arrancar un motor en vuelo no hace falta el APU. En caso de fallo de un motor en vuelo, el APU se usa como una fuente de electricidad de back-up.

Muy bonito el vídeo, siempre es un regalo para los ojos ver las Islas griegas sobre el fondo del Mediterráneo, lo que no me gusta es que no funcionen todos los sistemas del Avión, ya se que el APU no es vital pero supone un ahorro de costo de tiempo y combustible al tener un motor encendido o eso me parece a mi igual me equivoco. También tengo que felicitarte por tus explicaciones así vamos conociendo cosas cada vez mas de este mundillo de la aviación aunque esto de la APU ya lo conocía. Un cordial saludo y buen finde

No es habitual que el APU este inoperativa. Las aerolíneas intentan repararlas siempre lo antes posible. Quizás falló ese mismo día...

Que bien explicado el fallo de la APU y las consecuencias que este fallo tiene. En un aeropuerto donde Volotea tuviese más aviones basados supongo que lo normal habría sido un cambio de avión para tratar de minimizar los retrasos, no?

Lo normal es que un avión no opere sin APU si no es estrictamente necesario (es decir, si no hay otro avión disponible), especialmente en verano, pues siempre se puede ir a algún aeropuerto en el que no tengan maquina externa de aire acondicionado (aunque no es lo normal).

Volotea es una aerolínea Española, sí. Pero desde un principio siempre estuvo centrada fuera del mercado Español, comenzando por el Francés y luego centrándose también en el Griego e Italiano.
Desde hace algún año, han comenzado a operar seriamente bastantes ruta entre ciudades medianas en España.

Mykonos looks lovely, I want to go there on holiday soon. I noticed a few Volotea aircraft at ATH, are they operating flights from Athens this summer as they are a Spanish airline ?
Athens is one of their bases, as a low cost airline their operations are spread across various bases in europe
Volotea is an Spanish airline that was initially focused on the French market. Then they started to operate in Italy and Greece and, since 2-3 years, they've started also a nice amount of routes in Spain.
In case IAG finally buys AirEuropa, Volotea would be one of the most favored airlines in terms of routes in Spain.

No es nada común que se averíen. Si bien, puede pasar, y para ello existen procedimientos. Se averían como se puede averiar cualquier máquina :)
Un avión tiene tanta vida útil como buen mantenimiento se le aplique. Por ejemplo, yo he volado en algún Airbus de Lufthansa que tenía casi 30 años.
Para ejemplificarlo al extremo: prefiero volar en un avión bien mantenido de 50 años que en uno nuevo que no ha recibido mantenimiento durante 2 semanas :)

This autumn we'll have several videos to/from different Greek islands: Mykonos, Santorini, Zakynthos and Skiathos are confirmed for now :)
Flew this route in 1979 on an Olympic Japanese prop plane. Airport was tiny then.

The conditions at Athens had nothing to do with the weather, but the forest and scrub fires that were surrounding the whole area and threatening the city outskirts. It was well documented on the news.
Yes, now I remember that the fires were not extinguished by that moment. Makes sense.

Muy bueno el discurso en griego e inglés que escuchamos atentamente, acompañado del ruido de motores como fondo musical.
Lo de la Apu, no debía ser muy importante en un vuelo tan corto, espero que en caso de falla en los motores, existiera la posibilidad de reiniciarlos sin necesidad de ese artefacto, no?.
En caso de fallo de motor en el aire, el APU no se usa para re-arrancarlo. El propio avión al moverse (volando) crea suficiente movimiento del motor.

Please can I ask which airline is reliable from Athens to Crete? Sky Express Volatea or Aegan? Reviews online are poor for all in terms of loss of baggage
si no funciona la APU y en vuelo, por cualquier motivo, se pararan los motores ¿porían volver a encenderse sin el aire a presión del auxiliar?
Aún funcionando el APU (que es lo habitual), ésta no es utiliza para un re-arranque en vuelo. El propio flujo de aire al irse moviendo el avión suele ser suficiente para intentar un re-arranque. En caso de no ser así, se utiliza el otro motor de una manera equivalente a como se arranca en tierra el segundo motor sin APU.

Athens airport a little bit crowded. Greece allowes to entry for tourists from much more countries, than other Schengen countries. Aeroflot even flies there on B777-300ER.

El tema es que ni Aviles, ni Santiago, ni Coruña, ni Vigo son islas. Y tampoco tienen el tiron vacacional que tiene Mykonos :)

Actually, I see that the APU is not fully Inoperative. When you boarding, external electric power still connected, and we can see air from air vent, so we have here APU gen (provide electric) inop, you still have bleed to start engine, you have to start engine at gate because you haven't got electric...
The APU is operativ or inoperative. The status "not fully Inoperative" doesn't exist.
The air that you can see (condensation) while in Athens comes from an external air con machine.

Volotea's maintenance is so poor...How much is common to fly with an inoperative apu?
It's not common. But it can happen to any airline and any plane.
At the end, airplanes are machines, and even if they are perfectly maintained they can fail. This APU might have become inoperative during the previous flight... who knows...
All maintenance in Europe are at a high-standard. That's controlled directly by every EU country.

Ese avión no debería estar operativo con la APU INOP, y menos para el transporte de personas, ya que en caso de parada de motores o del motor crítico no podría volver a arrancar los mismos. Sobretodo en los momentos críticos como el despegue y aterrizaje.
Miguel, un jet no tiene motor crítico. Eso sólo se aplica a los aviones de hélice que no tienen motores contra-rotatorios.
Un jet no se re-arranca con APU en el aire. La propia velocidad del avión mueve el motor lo suficiente para re-arrancarse sin APU. Si por cualquier circunstancia no puede arrancarse de ese modo, se usa el otro motor para arrancarlo.
Durante el despegue y aterrizaje no se necesita el APU para nada.

To be honest it's a bit horrible to remain without APU, while flying over the globe, because in case of an emergency (i.e. both engines shotdown) plane will remain without power supply, which is needed for navigational equipment in the cockpit.
In the case of "both engines shotdown" the airplane has its own batteries to give electrical power to all the instruments that are required. And they will last more time than the plane can fly without engines.
