    These videos are always super helpful. I actually just shared a similar one, but these videos have helped me find scholarships I didn't know to apply to before. I was thankfully also able to get $20k in private scholarships in 4 months! Applying to local scholarships really helps!

    You inspire me so much! I have been accepted to a graduate program and am trying to find as many scholarship opportunities as possible. I'd like to hear more about how to write winning essays! Also, it seems that the OTEFE Foundation webpage doesn't exist anymore. Is this always this way or are they not offering scholarships anymore?

    • @sharonyeunkim
      @sharonyeunkim  Před 3 lety +51

      Hi Adanna! For sure. I think then at that point it's not a matter of quantity of how many scholarships you applied to but the quality of your application.
      You do not need to have stellar grades but I would look at the strength of your essays (assuming you had to write essays?) and try to make them stronger (better storytelling). I don't know if you did this but all the scholarships I won were specifically for Koreans. Perhaps that principle can apply to you as well.
      I'll make a video explaining how I wrote my scholarship essays.

      @@Akac3sh it's because there's only so much you can fit into a single CZcams comment lol.
      The point is not to win every single one but to increase your changes. Niching down is an effective way to do that via leaning into anything that can be more unique to you. There could even be local scholarships only offered in your town, school, city. Doesn't have to be ethnic-based at all. I just applied to a lot of those because there was a lot out there and there's nothing wrong with utilizing opportunities others went out of their way to create for you to apply to :)

      @@Akac3sh girl bye. What other advice do you want her to give? Stop taking it out on her as if she’s in charge of the scholarships. And sorry but she’s right,, if that person lost 69 scholarships, their writing was probably ass (or at least not done to the best of their abilities). And she didn’t say to be Korean, she meant to apply to ones that are more specific to you whether it’s your race, orientation, etc.

    what do you do when you have no story to tell? when you've not nothing extraordinary, when your life hasn't been extraordinary, when your own story is told over and over again by the other in your community because it's so common and is at this point overused? I've had no spectacular achievements, just the same ones that nearly everyone at my level has had. like I'm completely average among the others go to school with (I'm a 2nd year college student)

      Since that’s a major basis of merit based scholarships, prioritize those/initiate some of those activities ASAP. Just because you haven’t done it yet, doesn’t mean it’s too late to start! If not, try for need based.

      More than ethnicity or background, point is to niche down into what could make you different. Could even be a local scholarship only offered to people in your city/school. Or women’s only scholarship for example. Doesn’t have to just be ethnicity- I just happened to find a lot of scholarships based on that as an example

      A lot of scholarships are PRIVATE, so the entity/company chooses who can apply. Is it discriminatory for a museum to offer a scholarship to aspiring history majors and not everyone ? No. You can literally get scholarships based on your religion. NO EXCUSES.
