Does High-CRI IMPROVE This Flashlight? [Acebeam E70 GT-FC40]

  • High-CRI LEDs look a whole lot better than their low-accuracy counterparts, but that comes at the expense of some performance. The Acebeam E70 now comes with an option for the high-CRI GT-FC40 LED, which has better color than the standard Cree XHP70.2, but it's less bright and has lower runtimes. Is this a worthwhile tradeoff?
    This flashlight is available for purchase here:

    Acebeam provided this light at a discount for me to review. All opinions and measurements shown here are my own.
    Note that I do not have the equipmet to do a proper spectral comparison of the two LEDs, so this is mainly a review and comparison of the two lights from a more practical standpoint.

    They must have increased the thermal stepdown temperature for the gtfc40 version quite a lot as the xhp70.2 has an efficiency around 215 lum/w at ~1100 lumens and the gtfc40 has an efficiency of around 110 lum/w at ~900 lumens.

    Great comparison! I had gone with the XHP70.2 5000k and was thinking about also getting the GT-FC40 version since I like it so much. I think I’ll just wait to buy a different light to experience the that beautiful emitter since I prefer the massive output and efficiency of the CREE.

      I planned to get a Convoy S11 with GT FC40 but I ended up getting an XHP70.2 version in 3000k as I figured I would enjoy the efficiency of it better (I also owned a Convoy M3 so I knew how efficient it was).

    Got mine a few days ago,
    (before viewing this great video).
    I've found that placing a 15mm dia. x 3mm thick magnet
    on the Negative end of my Samsung 21700-50G cells
    *completely* cures that irritating problem of
    "bump/shake cutoff" !
    And wrapping a 3M Post-It Note
    eliminates any "battery rattle" noise.

    Thanks very much for your coverage of the color accuracy and tint issues. Even though it was subjective, I found your comparisons to be very useful. Overall I found your review to be way more informative than most reviews that just focus on lumens and throw. I wonder if they could do a 4x 519a version of this light (basically a bigger E70 Mini with better thermal dissipation). I look forward to more content from you that covers temperature, CRI and tint, even if it's all subjective. At the end of the day what's important is how the light makes objects look. Numbers only help if the reader has a ton of experience that helps them connect the numbers with a perception of how they translate into reality.

    I recently ordered this light because of the nice and cool design, and high CRI option is great, even if output is lower. As you say: it's still plenty of light amount.
    I appreciate a natural and pleasant tint and good color rendition when I am out in the nature.
    Yes, the moonmode could be lower.
    Good to hear about the consistent tint.
    It will be interesting to try it out when I get it, probably next week.

    Going by light quality, I think it's a fair tradeoff, especially if the power is lower but the range remais the same. Plus I never use my lights on turbo for more than a minute.
    The FC40 is inefficient at higher amps, but how does it fare at lower ones? Is there much compromise in runtime at medium or low modes that you've noticed?

    • @LuxWad

    Anyone else in the comment section who is a camper/hiker/outdoor adventurer who thinks that high-CRI LEDs are just trowing mAhs out of the window for nothing? Unless medical or forensics I really see no point except more heat and more consumption. I'll go with the XHP70.2 thank you.

    I see a lot about higher CRI rating on flashlights…. But what are peoples needs/uses for this?

    • @LuxWad
      @LuxWad  Před 2 lety +3

      It's basically a measurement of how well the light reproduces colors. A high-CRI light makes it much easier to differentiate similar colors. Whether or not that is necessary, it just depends, but many people find it far more pleasing to the eye.

    • @LuxWad
      @LuxWad  Před 2 lety +4

      Definitely a bug, it's not something that should happen, since it causes the light to turn off while in use. It's only a problem with the shorter cells though, since the springs aren't long enough for them

    • @LuxWad
      @LuxWad  Před 2 lety +2

      They might work, it just depends on how long your cells are. If you already have cells you want to use, buy the light without the battery so the springs don't get compressed, and it should work just fine

    • @NikonPhotoHawk
      @NikonPhotoHawk Před 2 lety +2

      @@LuxWad I'll certainly give it a go. The Samsung 50E INR 21700 5000 mAh Protected button-tops are quite long because of the protection circuit, too long for my chargers (Nicore i2, i4, D2, D4 and new versions of the i2 and i4)... I had to buy a Nitecore UMS2 charger. After I got the cells charged, I discovered they were too long for my Thrunite TT20 and Sofrin SP35 Lights. Another video show that the Samsung 4000 mAh flat-to cells work perfectly in this light. However I'm hoping that the protected button-tops that I already purchased will work as well.
