I am not a dancer... but, during my elementary days. Folk dances is a highlight during inter-school competitions... And, I remember our PE teacher told my classmates (Tinikling dancers): Don't at look the poles! Just listen to the rhythm! Tak! Tak! Tak! Clap! Tak! Tak! Tak! Clap!...😊😊😊

We are required to master traditional dances during secondary school since it's part of the topic.

We used to dance that in our school during my secondary school way back 1977 until now it's nice to watch the Filipino cultural dance and pass it to our younger generation

Tinikling requires rhythm and muscle memory.

I tried tinikling before (ages ago), and I found it's actually easier if you don't look because seeing the bamboo poles moving can be distracting. I looked down once and almost lost my place in the rhythm. It's better to focus on the sound/rhythm without looking down.

    • @gladysroca4007
      @gladysroca4007 Před rokem

That's the technique. Anyways the bamboo clappers are.doing.their best to go with the rhythm, too otherwise they'll gonna have some broken fingers.
Dance Tinikling when I was in Grade 3 in Mababang Paaralan ng aming barangay. Practice includes clappers alone to synchronised ŵith the music. And dancers alone Dancing on the tune ŵithout the clappers.

Watching you ladies react to Tinikling made me realise that it is a great cardio workout..not only are you jumping/skipping the entire time, but the fear of getting your ankles caught in the bamboo is enough to keep your heart racing hahaha

YAY! Singkil is a Muslim royalty dance. The lady who was carried on bamboo poles is a princess and the rest are her attendants. The man is a prince who tries to win her heart. This version is a short one and incomplete, though. The fight dance and the finale were not shown, also the beautiful dancing of the attendants with their fans. The princess, in other versions, even dances atop the bamboo poles while being carried by the male attendants. The instruments are brass gongs of different sizes and a kulintang. You can buy miniature versions of those because the big ones are really heavy, depending on the quality. Indeed, Singkil is a very elegant dance! Muslim dances are like that. Growing up here in Zamboanga Peninsula, I got to see these dances during school events and I looove those! Even now, they are my favourite dances in the Philippines. Try watching kappa malong-malong. That one you can definitely do, at least , the female version. And yes, you can definitely see these dances in Zamboanga!

The singkil is from the Mindanao islands and Spanish colonization was difficult there. They were able to have a stronghold in Zamboanga, thus a dominant Spanish influence. The singkil is from other parts of uncolonized Mindanao so the music does not reflect Spanish/ Mexican traces.

That cultural dance is not influenced by Spain it is influenced by Hindu and austronesian

When I was a kid there was this expert dance troupe that combines tinikling and singkil. The elegant girl dances on top of bamboo held by guys dancing tinikling. Philippine traditional dances in general are dangerous lmao there's one where you wave around lit candles inside pieces of cloth, like fire dancing.

You're right, Maglalatik there is way modern. The hip movements and other steps are an improvisation. And originally the Maglalatik is a standalone, like the beat is only being created by the dancers themselves thru tapping with the coconut shells. And their dance has less tapping.

Hola, Sol y Luna! In Singkil, that’s how Filipinos were during the precolonial (when the spaniards were not i. The Philippines yet). The maglalatik is modern. They should have touched those husks all thru out in a very rapid manner.

d one with coconuts is not the usual traditional style for that dance. they barely used the banging of coconuts. it should have been fast paced and loud.

The Singkil dance, is Pre Hispanic time dance from the southern region. the majority of whole country was Muslim and already influenced by Indian Empires before the Spaniards came and called it The Philippines.
The Mexican and Spanish traditions came later. You can see the Tinikling as the Hispanic version from Singkil.

The way I remember the story of singkil is about a princess who got lost in the woods and the wood faeries, portrayed by the group of women at the first part were disturbed (fans depicted butterfly-like faeries) and tried to trap the princess by shaking the ground and vegetation beneath her feet (depicted by the bamboos). Then a prince came and went to save the princess by saving her from the forest. The princess also had a hard-to-get moment when she met the prince (and why not? lol) and eventually got saved and they married each other. Usually, this dance is performed at weddings in the Mindanao region and it is one of the most iconic dances here in the Philippines.

Sayaw sa Bangko: | Harvard Philippine Forum Sayaw Sa Bangko at Cultural Rhythms 2011 | or |Bayanihan Dance Troupe in Hungary! - 2:00 - 2:50|
Sayaw sa bangko usually has 3 parts of the dance. The first title (Cultural Rythms 2011) did all the parts but for the Bayanihan Dance Troupe, they only danced the last part of Sayaw sa Bangko but they did it so much better than the first title. Bayanihan is the official folk dance troupe in the Philippines and they're the real deal. They only danced the last part of Sayaw sa Bangko (2:00-2:50) . I mean they basically danced the way it should be danced.
