One wall in my house looks like a sine wave. 😂 Luckily it’s not in a prominent place so it doesn’t bug me. Thanks for all of your great videos!
I just fixed a wall in my living room. The first four feet up it bowed out 1/4Th of an inch. Then the next four feet it bowed in 1/4Th of an inch sideways for 2 feet. The first four feet where it bowed out upwards was due to someone who put the tape on backwards, and when it dried the tape on the seam between the two pieces of drywall did not get sucked into the crack. The tape bowed out. The person who did the drywall just covered it up with mud. Then the wall bowed out due to the mud. I pulled out the tape, and scraped off the excess mud. Then I applied new tape correct. The upper four feet that bowed in I filled in with mud. Both sections required three coats of mud. Now the wall is straight, and the bows are gone. People who visited me said the wall was bowed. Now it is nice and straight.

I had to do a drywall patch many years ago (plumber had to fix to cut a hole in the wall to get the gas line properly routed after the last guy completely fluffed the job) and ended up finishing it off pretty much exactly like this, only I used a scrap length of 2X4 as my finishing tool. It was in the basement where that section of the wall was unpainted, so I never textured it or anything.
A few years later when we were getting ready to sell, the contractor prepping the place was looking it over and wanted to know who put in the patch (it was about 2' X 3') and I told him I did. "Want a job?"

Another option would be to do first coat or take out most of the bow with 5 minute mud and then use the ready mix for final coat. Great Job!

Great job Matt! We recently reno'd our bedroom and I had to become an instant expert at plastering when the old plaster fell off the wall when I was scraping the old wallpaper off 🤣 We're moving onto the bathroom next and I am hoping the old plaster in there is a bit sturdier. Ahhh the joys of a 90 year old UK house...

Just a drywall tip when scimming apply it on to the wall. Festher out your edges then skim the middle perfect. Let it dry a little to where it hard at surface but no completely dry just to the point you can put a hand on the wall eithout messing the wall up but feeling for a little moister. If you can feel the moister then take you tapping knife and knock off any imperfections. Then take a damp paint brush and brush out every imperfection. No need for sand paper anymore. This will give you a glass like finish everytime period handsdown.

We have a wall that is bowed out (convex) when "someone" decided to close off an arch that led to another room. The entire wall is a mess because part of it is lime plaster and slats and the enclosed bit is drywall and regular plaster/mud. Ugh. Such a mess.
The decision to remove the closed off portion of the wall revealed live oak pocket doors with stained glass, STILL INTACT and hidden in the wall separating the rooms. Talk about a find. There was nothing wrong with the pocket doors other than the rail that would have brought them together in the doorway was missing. The original hardware the doors are hanging from in the wall are in great shape. When we had the crawl space encapsulated we found the rail, though not in the best condition. In the attic we found the rest of the original live oak wood work that surrounded the doorway. We were so lucky nothing was thrown away, though the rail could have stayed in the wall when it was so poorly closed off.
We are currently trying to source someone to either repair the rail or recreate it.

Don’t want to nit pick but you’re making it flat, not straight! Nice work!
I switched to thin coating everything years ago. It minimizes sanding because you take it off when it is wet and then add thin coats. It does take a lot of strength in the shoulders, which I don't have anymore.

Good explaniation on the two compounds. Premix vs Hot Mud, do you notice a strength different in the two in the finished project? Also, they have 20min & 45min Hot Mud as you stressed the 5 min set time.

pro tip i learned from an old timer when taking off baseboard that you're going to reuse use a 5 in 1 knife they're perfect for taking off base without damaging it like you did

I'm curious whether the bow in the wall board was visible from the other side, going down the steps? Or is that part sheet rocked too? I can't remember.
@the fixer how would you fix a bow in wall that is coming out, not going in like your wall? Same procedure by adding compound and feathering it out in a larger area etc….until is kinda goes away; kr is at least better and not as noticeable? Curious to how’d you deal with this issue.

Yes! Nice thin coats on each side of the bow until it looks more straight. Will likely never look perfect but a little mud goes a long way!

If anyone here in the comments is considering doing this, and has never done it before, do NOT use the Easy Sand 5. Fixer put a disclaimer about it in his video, but just to reiterate the point... it will not go well for you. This stuff will start to set up waaaay too quick. It will get unworkable and you won't be able to float it properly. It sucks because they sell the 5 in a nice convenient small bag perfect for Do-it-yourselfers. Well, this is not a novice friendly product at all, unless you are simply filling a few nail holes. Really. Trust me. Just get the big bag of Easy Sand 45 or 90 if you need it done fast. But it's even better to take your time and use the Dust Control and let it set for 24 hours between each coat.
Hey brother hope all is going well , getting ready to do a roof over an existing patio that me and my family did over the covid pandemic and now we want a roof over it , but got me thinking were not profesinals and thought about asking you since being that you make everything look so simple , i was hoping maybe give me an idea on how to go about it , because I got like a pitch roof and than a flat roof and I was thinking of ataching from exsiting rafters from flat roof but right under neath I got a door that might be on the way for the rain 🌧️ run off wish i coud send you a video , but hey if you can share any ideas i would appreciate it. And man keep your videos coming love to watch that's how we got the courage to do the patio in the first place ,God bless.
You can use the 20 minute mud but add in hot water and it sets up faster.

If you start by putting 2 putty knives between the baseboard and the wall board, then when you put the uneven and thicker prybar down, between the two flat blades on those knives, it won't gouge the wall or the baseboard.

It’s best to scuff and prime first. I like BIN shellac for priming. It’s runny, but only a thin coat is needed and it sticks to everything.

When comes to kitchens/bathrooms and splash back (or backsplash) tile piece it drives me crazy when there’s a large gap ¼ or more from tile to wall and ppl just add caulk to fill the gap. What should be done , imo, and how I was taught is to use 5-20 min mud (or what ya like and prefer using for the timeframe you have) and do what is being done in this video, add the mud to wall and feather things out to bring the wall out to “level” and making a huge gap for caulking gone, so you can do an awesome 1/8 caulk joint or ¼ would be fine too. But it’s details like that is what makes the job great and not ok to good (again as I was taught); especially when using caulk to fill in a ¼-⅝ gap which doesn’t look good at all, but is done over and over ¹
¹ yes, it also depends on expectations of “job” and costs, along w/ if homeowners care or don’t care (as some don’t and want it done and are happy w/ even a 1” gap). So everyone is diff, as is every job; along w/ how you were taught and how you work (and whom work for as well), etc…..
why use the blue chalk on the second coat?
I'm planning to pick up one of those big skimming blades for my project. I need to skim almost every wall in my house. Also need to re-anchor some old lathe and plaster. Going to be fun!

Just curious, why ryobi? You do a ton of work. Those tools are going to give out on you. I prefer Milwaukee. They’re solid tools. You pay a little more, but for a guy like you, it’s worth it.
I have just had really good luck with Ryobi. Had one tool fail in 7 years so far and it was because of me. Can’t beat the price and selection of cordless tools. If they start to fail I might consider a switch but they work for me. 👍

Don't buy cheap paint, especially if you are working for a customer.

Haha we spell it "Koda". It means "little bear" which totally fit him when he was a puppy... not so little anymore. He looks like he is really lazy but trust me, he is wild sometimes!

walls arent straight.....1/8 is nothing, never see perfectly straight or flat walls on any job...if the homeowner wants to pay to float all walls perfectly flat we will but usually when it comes to the cost to do so they are fine with it.....higher end homes are bit different.

I find blending the 5 minute problematic. I tend to end up with a sharp edge.
Using the 5 minute for the first coat as it doesn’t shrink much then follow up with a fine finish yields the best results in my experience. Disadvantage is you have to wait much longer for the fine finish to dry.
