- Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (Japanese: Senjō no Merī Kurisumasu (戦場のメリークリスマス Battlefield Merry Christmas?)), also known as Furyo (俘虜 Prisoner Of War?) in many European editions) is a 1983 film directed by Nagisa Oshima, produced by Jeremy Thomas and starring David Bowie, Tom Conti, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Takeshi Kitano.
It was written by Oshima and Paul Mayersberg and based on Laurens van der Post's experiences during World War II as a prisoner of war as depicted in his works The Seed and the Sower (1963) and The Night of the New Moon (1970). Sakamoto also wrote the musical score and the vocal theme "Forbidden Colours," featuring David Sylvian, which was a hit single in many territories.
The film was entered into the 1983 Cannes Film Festival in competition for the Palme d'Or. Sakamoto's score also won the film a BAFTA Award for Best Film Music. (1)

In the end, nobody's right. We could all do with remembering that, from time to time.
If you think about it Oppenheimer ended the same way; on a close-up after a one-on-one conversation with Tom Conti
That was such a heart breaking movie. I loved it. After all these years I still think about the ending and how much we need to forgive each other.
One of the greatest movie scenes, takeshi kitano's performance here is to me one of the best ever, showing so much in these subtle gestures.
Takeshi is a fine actor capable of subtle and nuanced performances. I love his films.
The most touching last part of the beautiful film, heartbreaking 😢
It was best movie i've seen ever
You can break down the scene with one quote:
„Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language, even the phrase each other doesn't make any sense.“
-Rumi
No actor could have played Sergeant Hara better than Takeshi. His last smile had much.
Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away on March 28, 2023. However, this song he left behind sowed seeds in people's hearts and will remain in their memories forever. God bless.

People can affect many beyond themselves.
Be kind to all; humanity is fragile.
Man if this scene doesn't affected you in any way, you must have a heart of stone!
my beloved Father in Law served with the 29th/46th Australian Infantry Battalion on the Island of New Britain , he had no time for the Japanese , but liked this movie and then spoke about a Japanese youth at Rabaul whom he befriended , sadly this poor boy was to return Nagaski . God bless all the Australian soldiers who fought in the great Pacific War
Beautiful song!Beautiful scene!Merry christmas mr.Lawrence!
Love smiley saying, "Wish You Merry Christmas". They had their duty and we had ours. New day.
The last scene is one of the most bleakly beautiful ones in films in the history of mankind.
It sure is my friend.
good bye hara san God bless you
I watch this every Christmas eve. Heart-wrenching scene, Beautiful music.
Tom Conti doesn’t even seem like he’s acting. “God bless you” delivery so natural and heartfelt.
Every Christmas I would come here to watch again
tears cant stop, so does the time
First time I hear Takeshi speak English. I love his films and I've known about this film and the book it comes from for ages but have only seen scenes from it. It's one of those films I need to watch at least once. Music is beautiful as well.
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence
Great acting and a great film
@@kamatte_chan こんなコメントで笑っちまったよ
Tom Conti has a very distinctive voice. I love it.
I recognized him by his voice in Dark Knight Rises.
This is a sad scene from a brilliant film.
'Good bye, Hara-san.'
I always cry when hearing it. Had it not been for the war, Lawrence needn't have said like that.
"We are victims of men who think they’re right." How resonant is that? And not just in a war context...
Absolutely. Damn them all.
An excellent ending to an already excellent film. My particular favourite part about this ending is that Hara says "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" unlike the first time, where he just said "Merry Christmas, Lawrence."
There's a mutual respect between both Hara and Lawrence, even if it's in Hara's final moments, forged after everything that happened. There's something just so beautiful about it, I love it so much. Much like the entire film.
This movie is very humbling. Sometimes the country pays the price. Other times, the people themselves.
My favourite movie used to be Man on Fire. With time, this film. I cried so much watching this movie 😂
I know I should hate the guard, as my Father had every right to. But this is truly heart wrenching.
Merry larence merry Christmas good film I love David bowie

5:09 this scene I still remember after 20 years
When people realize they are not so very far apart!
This film and music left a lasting impression on me.
I want to cry..
He has already accepted that Japan lost the war and he himself will face the death penalty. It's a scene that truly reflects the spirit of a warrior. Furthermore, Lawrence himself also performed the uniquely Japanese bow of respect.
Duty, honor, and humanity. Conundrum of pain.
Read The Seed And The Sower by laurens van de post. Captures everything that this film is all about.
I'm reading. Hard going but very good
I've always wanted to read the book this movie comes from. My library never managed to get it for me. I have known of it for about 20 plus years now and I have always been fascinated by this movie.
Only those two guys are still alive…Takeshi and Tom… Hara and Lawrence…
Jack Thompson is also still alive and well.
Lindo....Beijinhos para o R.Sakamoto....❤❤❤💜💜💜💛💕💕
After what the Japanese soldiers did to so many Allied prisoners of war, not many would have had such compassion as Lawrence
Merry Christmas to all the Mr Lawrence's ❤

Always sends shivers and tears, this last piece. Great film.
On a lighter note - he could have shared some saki and apples ( loose on the table) with the exhausted men....
Two wise perspectives.
This would have to be Kitano Takeshi's greatest scene in any film he has appeared in. After Sakamoto Ryuichi's death Kitano Takeshi said that he thinks he is just about the last one left from that film. Brilliant film as it opens the door into the Japanese mind and their belief of Shintoism.
Most of the Japanese main cast have indeed passed. The actor who played Lt. Ito is still alive. As for the rest of the main cast, Tom Conti is still alive, he was in Oppenheimer this year as Albert Einstein. Jack Thompson (Hicksley)is alive as well. Allister Browning (De Jong) passed in 2019.
I agree that Kitano was fantastic in this. He really proved himself as an actor.
Tom Conti does kinda look like Abe Shinzo, former prime minister of Japan who was assassinated in 2023.
I will never forguet this movie
Takeshi Kitano is a great director and actor indeed. My favourite Japanese director.

Tom Conti.... Father of Nina Conti :-)
There's no excuse for the brutality the Japanese dished out to the POWs but the the Japanese were indoctrinated by the Samurai rule of Bushido.. no surrender and being taken prisoner wasn't an option and was so alien to Western values on life.. this final scene took on all that is wrong when cultures clash in the past but leaves hope that we can forgive!
No it is their belief of Shintoism that made them do what they did. Oh and on the subject of war crimes how about our invasion of Iraq which resulted in the deaths of more than 1 million Iraqi civilians? A fake war on terror instigated by American President George W Bush. There were no WMDs in Iraq and the fake war on terror in Afghanistan was no different. We went into both wars
based on lies. So if I were you when talking about the brutality of armies I would STFU as we are no different.

Very good film & I love this scene, except for Lawrence saying this pretentious guff to Hara, who only knows a little English. Are we expected to believe he'd understand it?
"It was as if, Celliers by his death, sowed a seed in Yonoi, that we might all share by it's growth." 🤮
